Scrollbars When Needed
Date: 05/26/05
Keywords: html
Does anyone know if there's a simple way I can set a no-frames page to only show scrollbars when needed? I have an image on my 1024x768 page that bleeds off a 800x600 page, and would prefer not to have scroll bars showing for those people viewing with a smaller display. I'm using Dreamweaver MX 2004 but have a basic knowledge of HTML. It's probably something really simple right?

Just thinking...

Keywords: software
Im sure most of the people reading this use stuff like photoshop, macromedia tools, quark, etc. etc.
Did you guys go out and pay for all that? Are you just using educational/cracked demos?
I'm just wondering how everyone does things. Of course everyone has heard that using non-full version software to make a profit is illegal and such... but I'm just wondering how everyone out there is doing things.
I won't tell.

Hallo!
Does anyone here has the links to available collections/examples of newspapers' (online-periodicals) template sets ? HTML + CSS sets are of interest.
Want to browse such sets collections (but not to browse ready newspapers).

Digital Download
Date: 05/26/05
Keywords: php, mysql, sql
I've been asked to make a site capable of handling sales of digital material, downloadable immediately on payment. It has to be able to handle packages sold as one product that are more than one file. (I've also seen some advertising that they can integrate login systems with, say, phpBB, which would be a nice (though not necessary) addition.)
There are dozens (if not scores) of code bundles out there to do this - but most of them cost, and I have no idea which ones are most effective. Can anyone recommend one they've worked with that is particularly good (and preferably not too expensive)? (PHP/MySQL preferred.)
Thanks!

I've been approached to design and maintain the official website for a small band. I've never made a professional website for anyone before, so I didn't even think about charging or anything when I made the original offer, but I know that it would be quite a bit of work so now I'm not sure how much I should be asking for in terms of payment. I'm thinking a lump sum for design and setup, then a flat monthly rate for maintenance. I've been told that general montly rates usually go around $60 US, is that a fair price? But I'm not at all sure how much to charge for the lump sum, especially since I'm not sure what the design and content will include. Can you give me some estimates?

CSS Frames
Date: 05/25/05
Keywords: css
I just had a quick inquiry if anyone has come across this before or maybe even done it.
A client of mine wants a navigation layout that stays static on the bottom of the page, something that I would have traditionally done with a frame at the bottom (see: www.sagesfous.com click on logo to enter main page).
Now my question is this, is there any way to simulate the horizontal frames concept using pure CSS? I've seen the vertical frames done, but never the horizontal frames in CSS. The client wants a static navigation bar on the bottom.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Web critique

Thanks to everyone who gave me such good advice for my first foray into real web design. I made revisions to my website based on your comments, and now I'd like to see what you think. www.myLBags.com. (Again, this site is only meant for family and friends...these bags are not for sale to the general public.)
I will probably play around with some of the layout in the future, mainly on the "Predesigned Bags" and "Customize Your Own Bag" pages. Right now the only part unfinished is a portion of the options on the second order form page and the dimensions of the customizable bags.

Embedding LJ into my website...
Date: 05/23/05
Keywords: web
I need some help in embedding LJ into my website. I would like to just get the entries, with no formatting, to appear where I want in a page. I've used the iframe method before and it works okay, but you still see all the formatting LJ puts in, and I don't want that...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PHP + MySQL Paging
Date: 05/23/05
Keywords: php, mysql, sql, google
Well, it turns out this whole PHP and MySQL project was a heck of a lot easier than I thought.
I have hit one hitch, though. I've looked all over Google for an easy script for using paging with my SQL queries. When all is said and done, this table I'm going to have will have somewhere around 5,000 entries, so I really need to enable paging.
Problem is, all the scripts I've found won't work.
I'm using a somewhat complex SQL statement (it's not just a SELECT * FROM TABLE kind of thing), and I've got all my query display and search functions working correctly. I just need this paging thing to work. I understand the general idea of how the whole function is supposed to work, but I keep getting errors.
If anyone can give me any help at all, I'd really appreciate it. I've totally resorted to cut-and-pasting code and just modifying the SQL statement to work with my existing tables, but it still won't work. I can post code portions if necessary..
Thanks in advance.

CSS in IE6???
Date: 05/22/05
Keywords: css, html, java, web
I just tried setting up my first website. I'm not a professional, but I am trying to teach myself about web development. I set up this website by creating .htm docutments in Dreamweaver. I wrote out all the code myself and didnt really use any of Dreamweaver's features.
So far I've only been able to test it in IE6 and AOL (using IE6). In both, I recieve error messages telling me that AOL or IE6 must close due to an error. I predefined the window size using a javascript, but in AOL the size comes up incorrectly. With or without this resizing script, the error messages still occur, and AOL/IE6 needs to close. Here is the site. (BTW, this site is only meant for family and friends...these bags are not for sale to the general public.)
I've been researching this, and read that IE6 can have some doctype issues. The doctype on all of my pages is this: !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN", and shouldnt cause any problems.
What is the best solution? I ljcut my CSS code below. Is the syntax wrong, or not strict enough, so that it's causing errors? If I want my page to be universally viewed, should I not be using CSS? I had heard that using frames is outdated, and I really like the control CSS gives me over everything on the page.
Thanks for any and all help!!! It will be very much appreciated! (I apologize for any x-posting.)
All of the below code is formatted correctly on the actual page. The syntax is correct, and the entire website works correctly when I test it in Internet Explorer through Dreamweaver.
body {background: url(background_image.jpg) fixed; scroll: no}
p {color: red}
p.white {background-color: white}
p.topmenu {background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14;

Community suggestions
Date: 05/21/05
Keywords: no keywords
I'm curious how active the moderator is, they apparantly haven't updated their own journal since March.
Journals have those "memories" things right? I'm not certain just how they work but I've seen other communities use them. This community doesn't seem to have taken advantage of it, and I was thinking it would good way to keep track of FAQs and interesting things that come up. Easier than having to search through all the entries I think.
And in the info, I think there should be a link to the w3 validators

positioning
Date: 05/21/05
Keywords: css, java
Hello,
Is there a way to center the content of a page vertically using css ?
What I'm looking for is the equivalent of something like :
#container { margin:0px auto; }
This would center the content horizontaly, but setting top and bottom margin to auto won't center it vertically.
The idea is that all the content would go in a div, and depending on the screen resolution, there would be margins above and below.
I know one can detect a screen resolution using javascript, but I was wondering if there was a way to do this using css, so it would be W3C valid, as the "align" property is deprecated for div.
Any idea ?
Thx all for you help.

Centering the contents of an Iframe
Date: 05/20/05
Keywords: no keywords
So I have figured out how to accomplish what I wanted to do, and now I am faced with a new delimna:
Centering the contents of the iframes.
Here is the page I have been working with:
http://shoppicayune.com/A/Antiques/iframe_page2.htm
Now when you click on a picture, a new page loads in the iframe. What I need to know is how to center the contents of the new page with in the parimetere of the iframe. If I simply center the page, when it loads in the iframe, you can't even see the image and the text.
So can anyone give me some idea of how I can do this?

A follow-up to my guestbook post from the other day
Date: 05/20/05
Keywords: web, spam
I have a Megabook guestbook on my Web site. It uses a CGI script and unfortunately I have been getting an INSANE amount of spam comments lately. I really don't want to take the guestbook down but I'm sick of dealing with 20+ spam comments every day. The only thing I've found that claims to be able to fight guestbook spam is a program called Junkeater. I was wondering if anyone has used this program before. How good is it at filtering out spam? Do you know if it is compatible with Megabook? Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Help with Mouse Clicks
Date: 05/20/05
Keywords: java, web, seo
Hello all. I am currently desinging a website for and antique shop in my community and I need some help on trying to figure out how to achieve a certain look and code.
This is what I have so far:
http://shoppicayune.com/A/Antiques/iframe_page2.htm
Please note the text link at the top. Basically what I want to achieve is when you click on one of images surrounding the iframe, it loads the image into the iframe. However I am not very sure how I would go about doing this or if I using an iframe is even the best method.
I have managed to find a script that allows me to achieve what basically want to do, however I want the images to go all the way around the center large display window as I have in the page linked above, and I want it to load the center large image with a click instead of a mouseover.
Here is the link to the script I have:
http://shoppicayune.com/picayuneflorists/index.htm
I am not to savy with Javascript, but I have Front page and I can edit a script if I have one.
Does anyone have any advice about how I could go about achieving this look or a script that could do what I want? Also if anyone knows any other communities that I might find better information surrounding this topic, that would also be helpful.
Thank you in advance for you suggestions and advice.
