I can get it to open in another window but I want that popup to also include some text underneath the picture that pops up. I cant figure out where the heck to put it in.

  1. a JS question (lazy code format)

    Date: 03/01/05     Keywords: php, java

    Lazy formatting cause I cant recall how to show code, so here is the quick and dirty. Inherited site with clickable menu, client is nitpicking over the fact that the menu does not disapear when you click on another object.
    (source http://gateway.rossoptical.com/nav.htm )
    is there a simple way to pull this off? Drop down menu's with mouse over focus is not what the client wants (sadly).

    script type="text/javascript"
    function toggle(obj) {
    var menu = document.getElementById(obj);
    if (menu.style.display == 'none'){
    menu.style.display = 'block';
    } else {
    menu.style.display = 'none';
    }
    }
    /script

    a href="#" onclick="toggle('menu2')">DOUBLETS and TRIPLETS/a
    ul style="display: none;"
    li a href="./php/product-doublets_standard_achromats.php" target="mainFrame" Standard Achromats /a /li>
    li a href="./php/product-doublets_precision_aplanats.php" target="mainFrame" Precision Aplants /a /li>

    Date: 03/01/05     Keywords: web

    I'm working on a mock-up for a website. I'm not loving it but the layout is what the client requested. What I need some help with is making the text on the front page look more appealing. Different placement? Different font?

    Any ideas?

  3. silly and basic question. [solved]

    Date: 02/28/05     Keywords: css, web

    i'm trying to achieve the simple effect of using CSS's border-bottom to fake an underline of a different color (and style).

    so, i have this on my stylesheet:

    a:link, a:visited, a:active {
       border-bottom: 1px dotted #ccc;
    }

    my only problem is that i don't want the links with images to have this bottom border. i've tried doing a img { } but this targets the image itself, setting its border to 0. but i want to target the anchor tag.

    The question is, is there any way of achieving this without using classes? ie:

    i've searched the web, but i haven't found any page dealing with this issue (which leads me to think that the only way is to use classes).

    thanks in advance

  4. Hi, my first time posting here.

    Date: 02/28/05     Keywords: browser, web

    Hello, I was wondering if I should build my site into all flash. But here's the thing, some people i've asked around about not having the plugin.. they usually denies the installation. My school browser, which is I.E, doesn't have a flash plugin as well. You see, i want to create a webpage viewable for most browsers.

    So, what should i do?
    Here's my first opinion, create a page for viewers to choose from.
    For example, having a flash page, then having a regular viewable sited page? Which will take more time than neccessary. :/

    Thanks in advance.

    Date: 02/27/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I installed my first one tonight and have been wrestling with trying to upload files into my directories for over two hours now. I keep running into the same error:

    "Sorry there is no album where you are allowed to upload files"

    The frustration's starting to sink in. I've tried fooling around with my Group settings, my Configs, logging back and forth between Admin and User mode and nothing is working. Is there anything else I should look at to get this thing to work?

    Kind of a let-down to end the night on this note. Thanks for the help. :)

  6. Dreamweaver MX 'Flashing' Problem?

    Date: 02/27/05     Keywords: virus, web

    I'm using Dreamweaver on Windows XP SP2. I haven't used it on the machine for a while and I'm sure it worked fine before! When it's starting up and loading the windows the top third of the screen will flash. Basically a grey block without content appears over the window (in code or design mode) covering any code, the row of buttons and the blue program bar above flashes too. It repeats it if I alt-tab to another program and back. Most annoyingly, it will have that block flash whenever I click the mouse button anywhere near there.

    I've gone through the preferences but can't see anything obvious, searched the web, tried disabling the anitvirus/firewall stuff (AVG/Sygate Personal) but it hasn't helped. Anyone know how to fix it?

    I have a Javascript popup box on my site.. I don`t really use JS much as it is bad for SEO.. Within this presized popup box, I have a link to another page. When clicked, that link opens in the already presized popup box.. How do I make it so it opens in the parent window? Google hates me. T_T`;;

  8. centering a div with xhtml strict [solved]

    Date: 02/26/05     Keywords: html, web, microsoft

    hi guys!

    before you all start shouting out: margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; let me surprise you. I'm not after the obvious solution. i'm after the microsoft solution. (pls, don't kill me)

    i'm trying to get my website to validate through xhtml1.1 and i have it all nice and neat on firefox. but on IE the div won't center (unless i use the deprecated tag

    ).

    since i believe all users should be able to see a correct (even if lacking some effects) view of the website, i have to try to center this damned div. :P

    but i also want it to validate.

    So if anyone could help me out, i'd be thankful.

    Hey all,

    I am currently trying my hand at a web design business idea, I have got some potential clients lined up, but I wanted to ask your opinion on the two sites I have made so far!

    http://www.initiatewebdesign.tk < That is the site for my web design thingy, it's on free hosting at the moment until I make a bit of money (I hope!) and then I will buy the domain

    http://www.formypain.co.uk < A fan site for the band For My Pain - for this one I have brought the hosting as it did very well and wanted to make it better with forums and the likes.

    Thanks a lot!

    This may be something completely obvious. If so, I'm sorry, but I cannot figure out why when I open my site in IE, the message "an error has occurred running scripts on this page" displays. I am not running any scripts, though, other than one to mask my email address from spambots, and it's only on a couple of pages, not all of them.

    Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Check out the image of the tank.. it's in a div that's floated right... and that div is also in a div that's floated left (to make the left column).

    The problem is - the image is linked. It works fine in IE, but you can't "get to" the link in firefox.

    The page validates... I don't *see* anything particularly odd...

    Does anyone know what's causing it?

  16. Client side JavaScript search

    Date: 02/23/05     Keywords: browser, database, java, web

    Lo,

    I've a great big table and I'd like users to be able to easily search it. Normally I'd produce this with a database backend and just do a search function with that. That's not an option this time. Instead I was simply aiming to use JavaScript to open up the web browser's find feature. That's Ctrl+F on Internet Explorer, etc.

    I've had no luck though. Anyone know (if it's possible) the JavaScript to open the find/search box in the web browser. Anyone have any suggestions for a client side search function? (Just one static page.)

    I have an image question, so feel free to redirect me to a Photoshop community if you know a good one ;)

    Can anyone tell me how to create text on a transparent background in such a way that it doesn't get all pixelated round the edges when it appears on a picture background as part of a Javascript slideshow? I have already tried all the different settings for the text (smooth, crisp etc.) to no avail.

    Thanks!

  19. Competition: Reasonable templates, content editors, plus goodies OR my persuasive skills?

    Date: 02/23/05     Keywords: web, hosting

    A potential new client/acquaintance casually contacted me inquiring about having me design a professional web site for her company....Shortly thereafter - before the sit down ironing out details discussion - she sends me an e-mail inquiring about another company who offers 50 MB hosting, 2 GB month transfer, domain name registration, web site design (generic template, mind you), a do-it-yourself content editor, 10 e-mail addresses, a professional description/write up of the company for "about us," "services," etc., AND a dial up internet connection for only.... $39.99 per month.

    That's cheap.

    I can recommend a good hosting company to her who only charges $4.00 per month for 500MB hosting, 25 GB data transfer, and.... like who needs 100 e-mail addresses, but it's included........BUT my regular web/graphic rates are between $25 and $40 per hour!!!

    Her inquiry regarding this $39.99 a month company with a $39.99 set-up fee really seems like a better deal for a simple web site....only $480-$500 per YEAR if she wants a basic web site to start out with for her company, plus all the extra goodies.

    How can I woo her away from wow of hosting, domain name, template design, do-it-yourself content editor, e-mail, content, AND an internet connection included in the cost? *scratches head* She's a good acquaintance and she's coming to me for advice, but I want her business!

    What do you think of my e-mail reply to her? How does it come across???

    Hi Mrs. Kenny,

    I've never heard of "so-and-so company" but I am am familiar with the type of web site editor program they offer (a design firm I do contract work for also provides the same service). "Unlimited updates with our easy-to-use online Website editor" - which means, the web site design is a generic template (some other company can also use the same design/layout/look - the web site design is not unique to your business/company identity) and is powered by a semi-user-friendly, but very basic "back-end/behind the scenes" type of web based program so you can update the content within the web site (mind you, only basic pictures and text, not the design itself) from your own computer without needing to know complicated web design coding language.

    Personally I am not a big fan of the do-it-yourself web site editors/programs - I can see how it is a neat feature, but it is very basic and limited. The do-it-yourself web editor programs seem like a good idea because the client can have control over updating the content (text) of the web site themselves whenever they want....however, based on my past experiences with previous clients and these programs, most of the clients I've set up template web sites for and trained to use the program (on behalf of the company I contract with) end up feeling stifled because:

    1) perhaps they are computer novices and find the web site editor program is challenging to use
    2) feel limited by the basic features and the plain, generic web site design; not having creative freedom to change things around
    3) have to pay a lot extra if they decide they do want to change things (or have to pay extra for services like search engine optimization)
    or
    4) stuck in an expensive, long-term monthly contract they cannot break

    I must admit though, Mrs. Kenny, $39.99 per month with a one-time set-up fee of $39.99 (in comparison to other companies I know about who offer almost the same type of full package deal but charge a $1500 start up fee plus an additional $88 per month for hosting/domain fee), "so-and-so company" does seem very reasonable at $480-$500 per year and might be a good way to start with a basic web presence......that is, if you feel comfortable with the template look of the web site design promoting your business and if you feel comfortable updating the content/text yourself.

    It really depends on what you have in mind for the design/layout/content of your business web site, your goals, your audience, how often you want to update it or if you would like to update it yourself, and what your budget is.
