Peak detection

    Hello people,
Could you please point me to some methods of detecting peaks in 1-dimensional time-discrete signals?
I've been googling for "peak detection" but 99% of the info is about cardiography and chemistry and virtually noone seems to be describing their method...
I thought for a while about just computing sliding average and dispersion and thresholding the growth/fall of the average and dispersion but there's a lot to think about the window size, adaptivity etc.; would be really nice to have a look at what the science has already invented in this area.
