Wi-Fi and VOIP questions...

    Hello!

Here's my situation: I live in a WiFi hotspot w/several accessible networks. (I currently use a cable internet connection.) I also have VOIP for my landline. Here are my questions:

    1. Can I just go ahead and log on to any available open wireless network w/in range, or is that illegal?

    2. If I ditch the cable Internet and just use Wi-Fi to connect to the internet at home, (which I'd like to do,) are there going to be any major downsides?

    3. Of course, if I go w/Wi-Fi as my sole Internet connection, I want to download a program that will encrypt/protect whatever I send online. Any recommendations for such a program?

    4. If I go wireless, will my VOIP landline still work, or will I have to revert back to a traditional phone company? (Which I don't mind doing if this Wi-Fi thing works out; I'm just curious.)

Thanks for all your help in advance! Cheers!
