Windows Media Player installation problem

Date: 08/22/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: no keywords

I'm trying to upgrade Windows Media Player from version 10 to version 11. When I try to install it, I keep getting an error message that says I'm not using "genuine" Windows. This is not surprising, as our computer was built by a friend. Anyway, I think I also got a similar message when I installed v.10, but I got around it somehow, however, I can't remember how I did it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Either that, or can someone just point me to a link where I can download a codec to play .avi files? That's why I'm trying to upgrade in the first place...
