video playback problem

    hi,

I reformatted my OS recently since it was lagging and practically out of space...but now everything is back to normal besides the fact that whenever i play a movie from a cd or from my hard drive...the sound plays but not the video. the sound plays in divx, winamp, and WMP but neither of those 3 play the video. before the sound comes on in windows media player, theres a brief message saying error codec missing or something like that...it comes and goes too fast to read it all clearly. can anyone tell me which codec i'm missing or what the problem is and how it can be fixed so that i can view videos again as well as hear it? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to any comments/suggestions.
