MB swap out questions

My older desktop computer has issues. Used to not boot, until reset was pushed. I upgraded the memory and it won't boot to complete. It does like it did before, everything starts, nothing on monitor. video card replaced a few months ago, same issue after.

My question relates to swapping parts. i've built every desktop i've ever owned, but always started with a clean HD. How much trouble would it be to replace the MB and chip & video with a combo board WITHOUT wiping the HD? Can i get it to boot to pull stuff off the drive and then wipe it, or do i have to wipe it and start over from scratch?
