Backlight for laptops running Windows XP?

    Hi all,

Just seen this community and I have a question which I'm hoping someone here will be able to answer for me.

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 (if that's even relevent) laptop running Windows XP and I have always used it at home, so I've always had it connected to the power supply. That way, there's always been a lovely, bright backlight on the screen, but I've noticed that when I disconnect the power supply and run it from the battery, the light goes off, and the screen is much, much darker. I assume this is an attempt to save power, which is fair enough, but my problem is, sometimes I literally cannot see the screen. I'm posting from a coffee house right now, where I'm connected to their wireless network, and it's very difficult to see what I'm typing, even. I've looked for an option to turn on some kind of light, and also to adjust the contrast, but I can't find anything.

Is there some way I can fix this?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!
