Routers.

I just have a question about routers, and I thought you guys might be able to clear it up for me. ^^

I only have a laptop, and I've just now advanced from dial-up 'net to cable. So, if I were to buy a router, would I be able to take my laptop around the house and connect to the 'net, or do I have to hook the router up to a PC? =/

My friend and I have debated on this, and I just don't understand why it would have to hook up to a PC first, considering that if the PC is off the router still works (for her).

It'd really help if I could get some insight on this before I go out and buy a router to test it myself. ^_^ Thanks!
