sound not working?

    ok, i have a question. firstly im using an emachines computer with windows XP. anyhoo, about 6 months ago, the sound on my computer suddenly stoped working. the headphones worked fine, so i contacted emachines and they replaced the speakers. the new speakers worked just fine up until about a week ago. now sound will play breifly, and suddenly stop. i tryed plugging headphones in, and they dont work either now. nothing is muted, everythings plugged in. when the sound stops working, i dont hear sound from any program weather it be windows media player, a game, or even system sound. i went through the troubleshooting wizard and still cant figure anything out. please dont tell me i need to open up my computer and remove my sound card or that somethings melting in my computer! ack! anyone have any ideas? thank you!!
