Windows Explorer

I bought an Acer laptop in December last year and only three days ago I managed to connect to the internet. Shortly after running some windows updates my computer's battery died and hibernated while still connected to the internet. I didn't think anything of it at the time but after it had been on charge and not re-connected to the net I found that some of my picture folders weren't opening or showing up altered. I have a huge picture collection but only keep 100 pics in each folder. I went into one folder and the computer took its time like it was loading a huge file and then a pop-up came up saying "Windows Explorer has experienced and error and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience," I close out of that but often have to open the task manager to close it down and it says it isn't responding. This has also happened with another folder but I deleted that folder and other folders take forever to open whilst on any view (normally thumbnail) and the icons on thumbnail view are tiny.
My main questions I guess are... Do I need to delete these folders and the pictures in them to stop this? Is there any way to fix this problem?

    Thank in advance.

P.S I have run total virus scans and spyware scans with nothing reported.
