MP3's won't play.

I've just downloaded some MP3's and when I try to play them in Winamp, they don't start. There is no time value beside them either. Each of the MP3's is 3Gb or more, so there's definately something to them. I get an error when I try to play them in Windows Media Player. I asked the question amongst some friends and got the response that I need to decode them to Wav and re-encode them back to MP3. Is this correct and if so, does anyone have a suggestion of a (preferably free) program to do this? What's happened to the files that they are like this?

Thanks so much for any assistance.

    Cheers.
