Code 42

My computer is stuck in a horrible loop. It starts to start up, then the screen that asks you if you want to start in:
    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with networking
    (a third option)

If a power failure or some such event caused the computer to shut down, start Windows normally.

I first tried starting the computer normally, because I manually shut the computer down. It didn't work, and looped back to that screen. I tried Safe Mode with networking. Didn't work. I tried Safe Mode. Didn't work. And now I can't use my keyboard.

Now, before I shut the computer down, I was defragging, and instead of telling the defrag to stop, then closing it, I just clicked on the X. It was only in the anazlying stage (5% through). I had decided to defrag over night, when I didn't need to use the computer (it was taking forever, and quite fragmented). Could this had caused the problem? No other program was running at the time.

Is there a way to resolve this without reinstalling Windows? I just transferred a bunch of photos over to it from my lappy, so I could burn them on to DVDs (my lappy can only do CDs). Luckily it won't be the end of the world if I don't save the photos, but I'd like to try.
