freezing/slowing down computer

    my computer always seems to slow down/freeze when i keep it on for long periods of time. i know that sounds dumb, but it makes me think something isnt right. the screen saver will slow down a lot, and then programs wont respond/do really slow. is there anything i can do for it or does it sound like anything similar? suggestions? here are the specs incase it has to do with anything
    Asus K8NE-Deluxe mobo
    AMD Athalon 64 3000+
    2.01GHZ, 1GB RAM
    10K RPM HD, 36.7GB, 25.6GB used.
