Big Time Computer Trouble

Cross-posted in a bunch of places, cause we're desperate. :)

Our computer starts up fine, but once you get to the windows XP profile screen and select a profile, it freezes almost immediately. Programs will only run in Safemode with command prompts, because no desktop loads in that mode. Through the task manager, we can access programs, so we have cleaned the regisrty and run virus-cleaners that say there are infected files on the computer. However, we deleted the infected files and still the same problems. Hard dick-check says there are problems with the disk, but it can't fix them because the disk is in use. We can't figure out how to do a basic DOS run.

Can anyone surmise what's going on here? And, can anyone point us in the right direction in terms of what to do to remedy the situation? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
