cd drive not seeing blank cds

specs: iBook G4, 1.2 GHz, 768 mb RAM, Tiger, CD burner/DVD reader

tried: restarting, zapping PRAM, burning a CD (does work), repairing permissions, deleting Finder's preferences, different brands

ok. my laptop will no longer recognize blank CDs either in Finder or on the desktop. iTunes recognizes them sometimes, and will open. it does see ones that are burned (by either Mac or PC). sometimes it will just sit there, sometimes it ejects the blank disk.

i looked back through the MacOSX community, and one person did post about this, and that's where i got the idea to zap PRAM, repair persmissions, and trash preferences. however, it doesn't give a solution that worked for that poster. and none of those ideas fixed my problem.
