Help, Please
Date: 02/02/07
Keywords: web
I don't know if this is a Firefox question, or a computer question in general. On a few websites I go to, it looks like they opened up in safe mode. A lot of graphics appear to be horked up. Any ideas as to what to do?

Intel Graphics Drivers Question
Date: 02/01/07
Keywords: software
I picked up a new laptop last night (Toshiba Satellite P105-S6177), and everything is fine EXCEPT for issues with the graphics chipset (Intel 945GM).
This is basically my new gaming laptop, and I installed Vanguard on it but it doesn't run.
After hours of troubleshooting and researching the error I received, the issue comes down to the chipset apparently not have a vertex shading value of 2.0.
Intel.com says that the vertex shading for this chipset can go from 1.0 to 3.0, but it is basically set at 3.0.
Is there a way to change this value?
This laptop came with Windows Vista, and I am still learning my way around it. I have yet to find anything that will allow me to change this, and there is no software on the machine that is a "control panel" for graphics beyond changing brightness, color correction, resolution, etc.
Any ideas?
I am very tempted to take this back and eat the 15% restock fee.

Importing into Outlook2003 CANNOT be this difficult..
Date: 01/31/07
Keywords: no keywords
I'm about ready to track down Bill Gates and (this part censored to protect both parties.) Anyways I'm trying to import part of an excel spreadsheet into my outlook contacts so that I can do a mail merge for a mass mailing. I tried defining fields in the spreadsheet and then specifying on the import, but that didn't work. It basically gave every "category" its own personal entry. Some how I got it to work with CSV, but I'm not sure what I did for it to do so, and I don't think I should HAVE to convert to that format, since all these Office programs are supposed to work so well together. Yeah, I went there. ;p
Can ANYONE help me with this? There has to be a simple way to do an import into Outlook from Excel that isn't so g*ddamn difficult and requiring me to fix data.

Help!!!
Date: 01/30/07
Keywords: programming
Hi, I'm new to the community. I study Graphics Design (this is my first year) but we started with Computer Science in general. I have no idea about programming and I don't get pascal at all... Can anyone help me with writing a program?
I'm supposed to create a program using Delphi7 (=> console type). There's a .txt file with a list of 4 students, the number of their grades and the list of the grades. The program should count the average of the grades for each student and then sort the names by the average, lowest to highest.

I tried to do it myself but I'm a poor programmer. Here's what I came up, but most of it is probably wrong.
program Project2;
{$APPTYPE CONSOLE}
uses
SysUtils;
const max = 20;
type
student = record end;
ave = real;
studentlist = array [1..max] of student;
var
f: text;
no, i : integer;
sum : real;
name : string;
u : studentlist;
N : 4;
begin
assign(f, 'data.txt');
reset(f);
for 1..N do
u[i];
readln (f; u) name;
readln(f, no);
sum : 0;
for i:= 1 to no do
begin
read(f, grade);
sum:= sum + grade;
end;
u.ave := sum/no;
{ TODO -oUser -cConsole Main : Insert code here }
end.
If somebody can help me I'd be really grateful. I promise to study more on the pascal in the future.

Blocked sites
Date: 01/29/07
Keywords: web, google
Hi,
I hope I'm not posting an inappropriate question, but I'm hoping someone can help me.
My work has often blocked useful internet sites (like penny-arcade.com and xbox.com), but lately they've started blocking sites that I need to access, like rentertainer.com.au (our Australian equivalent of gamefly) and even, briefly, Google. Can you believe it?
I remember hearing some time ago about a website or sites that will allow you to bypass blocks and will retrieve websites anonymously for you. Now I'm wishing that I'd paid more attention.
Is anyone able to point me in the right direction for something like that?

The title basically says it all. The message on the BSOD seems to be different every time, but it only seems to happen if I leave it on and open for a couple hours straight. This is a brand new Dell barely a month old.
I can provide more info if needed. Thanks!

Building a PC
Date: 01/26/07
Keywords: programming
This'll be the first time I've built a computer from scratch and I'm just looking for a bit of advice regarding hardware compatibility. My computer's main purpose will be for gaming, but I'll be doing a fair amount of programming on there too.
Motherboard: Asustek AM2 nForce 590 SLI ATX 8 ch Audio 2xLan W/Less LAN
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 AM2
Graphics Card: XFX GeForce 8800GTX 768MB DDR3 PCIE Dual DVI TVo
PSU: Corsair Powersupply 620W Black, ATX/EPS, 120mm Fan, 8xSATA, SLI
RAM: Corsair TWIN2X 8500 DDR2, 1024MB CL5 Kit w/two matched 512MB PC8500 dimm's x 2 (2GB RAM)
Hard Drives: Western Digital Caviar RE2 500GB S300 16MB x 2 (1 TB)
I already have the Motherboard and Processor, and once I have built the PC I will be looking at buying the same graphics card again and some more RAM (might as well take advantage of the board's capabilities). The only thing is I really don't know very much regarding power supplies, and after looking around for information, it seems the 620W supply I'm after would be more than adequate. Is that right?
I hear this board is a little fussy with memory (especially Crucial) and seeing as the Corsair memory I have chosen isn't yet on Asus' qualified vendor's list I hope I'm not taking too much of a risk.
Anyway, any thoughts or suggestions are completely welcome. Thanks :)

WMP device sync kill
Date: 01/26/07
Keywords: browser, web
This is driving me crazy. I listen to an online radio station VIA Windows Media Player (11 I think, look Vista like) and the thing that bugs me the most is every time I plug in my thumb drive while listening, I get a prompt about sync stuff. Thing is, I don't want this (and I don't what extra files on my thumb drive, only 256 MB, and I tend to get big files to put on it) because I don't download music at all. Hell, almost all my MP3 files I have could fit on a 650MB CD (or whatever that smaller size that was the most common)
Is there a way to tell Windows Media to not even bother, or do I have to go back to using my web browser to listen to the station (and have to deal with upping the volume every time I play it)

Choppy Sound in QuickTime?
Date: 01/26/07
Keywords: no keywords
Hi everyone. =) Every time I open a QuickTime movie (I use Firefox prominently, but it also happens in IE), the audio is choppy. It's as though a person is talking, and they're pressing the mute button on their phone over and over and over, so you only hear half of what they're saying. It's very annoying. I've uninstalled and reinstalled QuickTime multiple times, and nothing's helping. Any help is appreciated; this problem is very annoying. TIA =)

Looking for a PC based Speed App....
Date: 01/25/07
Keywords: no keywords
Greetings all-
I'm looking for an PC app that can monitor the amount (performance) of data currently being pulled from a drive; internal or external.
There are plenty of programs that do speed tests and data rates by themselves, but they do not monitor the amount of data currently being read by the CPU off of a drive by another app.
Thanks all!

Looking for a Tablet PC
Date: 01/24/07
Keywords: html
I'm looking to buy a new Tablet PC for my dad. Thing is I don't know a great deal about these PCs. Unfortunately these are rather expensive and range greatly in terms of costs. It looks like the best overall one is the new X60 Lenovo (http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/notebooks/thinkpad/x-series/tablet/sitelet.html?ipromoID=hpc00018)
. Thing is this is going to be upwards of $2,000, and I don't see many offers for special financing either. I was looking at a few Gateways, but those got VERY mixed reviews.. especially that the stylus and the support isn't that good, and with my dad who has the patience of a spoiled 4 year old, and my lesser computer knowledge with Tablets is not going to help either, so if spending more money will shut him up for the long run, then so be it. Anyone have any experience or opinions on this? Thanks.

Study Programs for Students
Date: 01/23/07
Keywords: software, asp
hey guys,
I'm a student and right now I'm cramming up on a subject that has a lot of vocabulary terms. I've done all I can to grasp them but I think my old methods have reached their limits, frustration took over and I threw my flash cards out the window. Now I'm looking to start afresh with some new approach. Maybe there is some kind of software that lets you enter words and phrases, then enter definitions, and then flash them on the screen of your computer. Or something like that. Basically, I'm looking for suggestions on any helpful application you may know about.
