1. Virtual Memory Paging File

    Date: 04/26/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I have a Windows 2000 Pro system that I would like to run with a zero size paging file. I have set the minimum and maximum size to zero but when the system boots it tells me that I don't have one obiviously. Is there a way to eliminate this message or should I just set the file size to something very small?

    TIA

  2. Video Woes Cured!

    Date: 04/26/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Remember back a bit when my video card was making my Warcraft 3 look like Warcrap? And all my Sims had graphical tumors? Well I thought it was a heat issue and lo it was. Thanks to a nifty turbine slot cooler (I also replaced those craptacular IDE ribbon cables with sweet tubular ones) my FX5700 is purring along. I'm temped to rivatune it a bit...I suppose once you get in to overclocking you get a bit addicted.

    I also upped the RAM to a gig (okay so what if they're Kingston 3200s? I'm not made of money!).

    Thanks folks for suggesting ideas/confiming my suspicions.

  3. domain controller issues

    Date: 04/26/05     Keywords: no keywords

    i'm currently running a domain at my house and i'm having some major issues with it. first off i promoted my pdc sometime ago and its been going fine. now i need to change the domain name to the new registered domain name. problem is at one point in time i promoted a second domain controller, that is no longer even together. but this domain controller was never disjoined from the domain. now i can't demote my pdc to a normal server because in theory its not the only domain controller, and obviously i can't remove the other domain controller since it doesn't exist.

    is there a way short of blowing out my pdc to demote the server and start again.

  4. java

    Date: 04/26/05     Keywords: java

    ok, i am trying to do a simulation program in java, and it is going to run through "1pm-11pm" (not during actual time or real time either). anyways, i'm trying to get the clock thing working and so far it just keeps running through 1-1:59 over and over again.

    here is my code:

    for(int h=1; h<11; h++){
          while (h<=11){
                 for(int m=0; m<60; m++){
                     String currentTime= h +":" + m;
                 System.out.println(currentTime);
                 }
          }
                      }

    how would i get it so that it would print every minute from 1-11pm?

    Thanks

  5. Desktop

    Date: 04/25/05     Keywords: google

    Does anyone know a nifty little program or some trick that will let the icons on my desktop be hidden until I mark everything on the desktop, or something like that? I have pretty wallpapers that I want to see ;)

    But I'm also rather addicted to all the icons and folders there, so I'm kind of stuck. Any tips? Google went all cryptic and refused to tell me anything of interest, typical of google.

  6. More help...

    Date: 04/25/05     Keywords: microsoft

    I just downloaded pspVideo9 and everytime I try to open the program an error comes up that says:

    C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.0.3705\mscorwks.dll could not be loaded.

    I tried downloading the needed dll file and placing it in the v1.0.3705 folder but nothing seems to be working. I've also tried installing the service pack for the microsoft.net 1.1 but when I click on it I get the same error.
    Any suggestions?

  7. AHhh please help me

    Date: 04/24/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I have a fairly new Compaq presario 2200 (it's about 2 months old) and latlly its been acting really weird.

    some of the things it is doing include: The clock is going nutts, The time changes everytime I restart, and often whie im on it. ive changed it to the correct time a million times, but it never stays right. Some times it usually seems to jump back in time. Like it keeps time for awhile, and then it gets all nutts on me.

    The most annoying thing it is doing is just randomly freezing up. It freezes compltly, to the point where nothing works, and i have to pull out the battery and ac adapter to get it to restart. I've tried letting it be in hopes that it comes out of its frozen stage... but I left it over night and it was still frozen so I figure that its not going to unless i make it...

    I've ran a nortans check on it, and an adaware check, both came up with nothing.... Im probably going to save everything to a disk soon and wipe out the hard drive, repartition, and reformat it.... however, based on the symptons, it seems like its not a problem with the soft wear.... does anyone have any ideas? Im kinda desperate, its finals week and its hard to get any papers done when your compter locks up randomly..

  8. Graphics card advice

    Date: 04/24/05     Keywords: shopping

    I need a new graphics card, preferably a Radeon 9800 XT Pro. In your opinion, is it worth the money? I've heard various points of view, but I'm doing my research before I plunk my cash down on a soon-to-be-obsolete purchase. Is there something better out there for a reasonable price? I don't mean simply bargain shopping, but rather through usage and experience, which cards perform better all around?

    My specs (which could verily stand to be improved by now):
    ACPI PC running WinXP Pro
    AMD Athlon XP-M +1400
    NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 200
    Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC
    1.20 GHz, 512MB of RAM

    Secondly, I'm looking for a sturdy new case with easy disassembly access. My current one is a flimsy, airtight piece of crap, and impossible to open without contorting my wrists in a very non-human manner. I need one with enough ventilation and room for a myriad of fans, ports, and drives, but reasonably small enough to be handled with ease. Any recommendations?

    Thirdly, what equipment sites do you prefer? I use Newegg.com, ZipZoomFly and a couple others primarily for parts, but I'm eager to expand my bookmarks.

    All advice would be greatly appreciated.

  9. Scavenging batteries from a C610

    Date: 04/24/05     Keywords: software, web

    I'm planning to build a wearable computer, using a Maci Mini, a Twiddler, and a pair of HUD glasses. Everything's covered, except a portable power supply.

    I have two batteries from my dead C610 (DP/N 3149C), which put out enough voltage (14.4V) to satisfy the Mac Mini (needs 12+V, or 20+V to run Firewire). I could just wire them directly and be done with it, but it would be nice to have a battery life indication on-screen.

    Does anybody know where I could get schematics or technical manuals for the batteries or the C610 itself? I tried Dell's website, but didn't find anything useful. I want to use the existing control circuits, but I'm not sure if that's more trouble than it's worth.

    And since I'm wandering blind: anybody ever try something like this? Am I overlooking an easier solution of some sort? I known some UPSes have feedback software using a USB port; is there any similar solution for portable batteries?

  10. LCD Monitor question.

    Date: 04/24/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Do LCD monitors suffer from burn in? Do screen savers matter on LCD screens?

    Actually, I'm pretty sure that most modern CRT monitors can't even get "burn-in" any more, what with the energy star stuff and whatnot.

  14. Computer Tech Jobs - Dallas, TX

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: yahoo

    There was such a great response to my posting yesterday, I thought I would try some other groups to see if there are any techs in the Dallas area needing a job so here it goes again.

    I know that the Dallas Tech Support Job market is not great and you may know someone that needs a job.

    The company I work for, CompuCom, is needing as many Computer Support Techs as it can get its hands on right now. Got a friend that is out of a job? Looking for a better place to work? Send me the resume and I'll get it to the right people. I can't go into alot of detail, but this company is getting a lot of new business and the pay is not bad.

    Starting Pay is around $15 an hour. You can get more if you have certifications. A+ Certified is required within the first 90 days if hired and the company will pay for you to get certified.

    Resumes need to be in MS Word Format or PDF. Email them to me and I'll get the ball rolling for you.

  15. Yahoo! email issue...

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: spyware, yahoo

    Hello fellow geeks.

    When I go to reply to an email on my home computer it comes up (and stays) like this......

    Image hosted by Photobucket.com

    I wait for it to fully load with the original message but nothing actually happens. I also cannot attach anything because the button is light shaded yet I don't seem to have this problem on other computers and I can use my Hotmail on here perfectly fine so it must be something on here conflicting with the Yahoo! email setup.

    I don't recall disabling attachment support in IE.

    Anyone wonder what might be wrong?

    I'm gonna run some scans on it soon to see if maybe there is a spyware program or something conflicting with it. Was just checking to see if any of you's recognised the problem.

    Cheers,

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Ok so I'm almost done building my tiny dell pc. Here's the parts I've ordered so far:

    Western Digital SATA 40GB 7200RPM 8mb cache
    Dell Slim Floppy module
    Dell DVD/CDRW module
    Intel Pentium 4 530J 3 GHz
    Centon Dual Channel PC4200 kit (2x512)

    It's about done, all I need now is a heatsink that will fit dell's weird socket, and a usb wifi adapter.

    Which usb adapter would you suggest? It needs to be 802.11G

    Thanks

  18. Any Aireo owners out there?

    Date: 04/20/05     Keywords: linux

    I just bought one of the version 1 players. I am pretty pleased with the features.

    I am trying to figure one thing out though...

    I can drag and drop files in to the play list folder, but there is no actual playlist on the player.

    I'd like to use this in Linux and not rely on a Windoze box with WMP.

  19. Video Card Question

    Date: 04/20/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I have a 256 MB BFG NVIDIA Gforce 5700LE OC(overclock) video card. While playing Neverwinter Nights, Warcraft 3, Sims 2, etc. I get these strange bands of odd colored pixels. I am running these games at full tilt bells and whistles in the games, but I've tried various combos of lower FX settings and I still get the bands (sometimes it's static like noise). They might be showing up on the edges of polygons, can't really tell (games have such good blending these days!). I think it MIGHT be that the card is getting hot (don't have a temperature reading).

    BTW, My PC has a 2.4 Ghz P4 with 768 MB of RAM. I have the LATEST NVIDIA and DirectX drivers.

    I'm a competent user, but I plead ignorance on the gaming tech as I have been a long time console person and I'm only now switching to PC games.

    These games are pretty old and I would assume my rig should be pretty capable of running them cleanly, but alas...Any advice would help.
