1. Blueish hue on extended desktop monitor when video out is enabled

    Date: 05/08/05     Keywords: web

My video card has a DVI, VGA and S-Video port. I currently use both the VGA and DVI port to extend my desktop. However, when I have an S-Video cable patched in, my secondary monitor seems to get a blue hue. Also, when I disable the TV output, the 2nd monitor is a bit blurry. This not only happens in Windows, but on the POST screen as well. Simply unplugging the S Cable seems to remedy it, but I hate the think this card can only do a main and a secondary monitor OR a TV. ATI does not seem to offer any kind of *good* support, even after an email and a trouble ticket. After not being able to resolve it, I uninstalled the old video drivers, and installed the newest ones from ATI's website (Hydravision: 3-25-000, and Catalyst: wxp-w2k-catalyst-ccc-8-121-050322a-022141c-english)

    Any thoughts all? Thanks!

Below are the basic system specs.

  2. New laptop

    Date: 05/06/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for around $4,000. Can anyone make any suggestions. I know next to nothing about laptops. I was just going to buy one of those 17" powerbooks off the mac.com store. All I know is I want to be able to play my MMORPGs, and have lots of RAM....and maybe run Tiger on it. Oh, and I also want to be able to brag about it. Thanks.

  3. Domains?

    Date: 05/06/05     Keywords: web

I am looking to register a domain, like, now. I have the webspace and everything (free server space provided by a very nice friend), and I'm wanting to register www.shifuimam.com.

Now, I have been told that places that lease domains are not as good an idea as those that sell them, but Network Solutions is $35 a year, while Aplus.net is $6 a year, and GoDaddy is $9 a year.

Do I need to worry about a leased domain, since my domain is really weird? Is Aplus.net any good, or should I just pay the extra $2 and use GoDaddy?

Plz advise - thanks in advance.

  4. Backing up windows XP pro service packs and updates

    Date: 05/05/05     Keywords: google

Awhile ago I remember reading that it was possible to back up windows updates and service packs to a CD. Since I am back at College and I am on a dial-up connection I realized that I would like to do this in case of a crash so I do not have to spend the rest of my life re-downloading the updates. Also I would like to be able to do this so that i can free up Harddrive room. Is there anything special that I need to do or can I just copy C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ and C:\i386 to a cd and than that is it? I can burn them to a CD than just simply double click the exe and be good to go? If not what files do I need to put SP2 and all other updates on a CD. I did try google however I did not know enough to turn up adequate results.

They're then additionally modded with your choice of Light Side or Dark Side themes. External decals, light kit and desktop theme. They even throw in a membership to the official Star Wars online fan club. I admit, booting the system to "what is your bidding my master", sounds appealing."

  6. Tired

    Date: 05/03/05     Keywords: security, virus

I am tired of trying to figure out what in the computer industry I want to do. When I ask for advice, my profs tell me to do in computers what interests you.
So, when I ask questions about security, virus protection, why virus protection is so re-active and not pro-active, why the school seems to leave such HUGE holes open in there network ( and I see these and I have only really been "into" computers for 2 semesters, but reading for a year or so)
Case in point, networking class. My prof is lecturing on how to install a windows OS. (Snooze time) Then he gets to the admin settings, and sets the one user as admin and one user as a limited user. Ok, I think, now talk about the Admin setting you get in safe mode......waiting...waiting......next topic. GREAT, I raise my hand, and ask.
    "No we set that already"
    No you didnt"
Yes I did, see it here, see how it says ADMIN"
"Yes, I see that but what happens when you start in safe mode and the Admin account is there with no password?"
"That isn't the case, moving on"
So, on our 15 min break I go up, restart the computer in safe mode, and leave it there, his admin, and the OTHER admin. He was shocked.........and all I can think is, great here comes the comment I get all the time.
Prof.."I have to keep my eye on you, are you some sort of hacker?"
NO idiot, I just read, and want to know what people know that exploit the system, and shouldn't you think the same way?????
    sigh.......

  8. Found New Hardware

    Date: 05/02/05     Keywords: no keywords

A long time ago, I was having printer problems. I wanted to uninstall and the reinstall it. Not knowing what I was doing, I believe I installed it 3 different times (at least it was listed 3 times on the printers area)
and I would get the Found New Hardware bubble thing to pop up...

I finally figured out what I was doing and now only have my printer listed once in my printers folder. However, every time I restart my computer, Im am still getting that Found New Hardware bubble to show up. Any ideas as to how to fix it???

    My printer works fine, btw.

I was curious as to if anyone here does any program/registry/settings tweaking to make their computer shutdown/boot up faster, and what programs (if any) they use to do the tweaking their Win XP systems.

I am a fan of XP-Antispy along with XP Smoker for some basic quick settings/registry tweaks. For more in depth tweaking/utilities I like Tweak XP-Pro.

My current boot up time from power-on to a fully loaded desktop (NAV loaded, USB devices recognized, etc) is 27 seconds.

My current shutdown time from the time I hit Shutdown/Restart is 7 seconds.

I am running with no paging file as well.

I tried to start a multisession burn of some things using Nero, and for the 2nd straight time, it froze up on me after it got done, so I couldnt save it to add more onto it.....

Why is this happening? is it?

    a) My computer
    b) Nero
    c) the CD-RW disks, or discs (BTW, which is the correct spelling?)

  15. Curious problem...

Date: 04/28/05     Keywords: virus, web, linux

Windows XP box. Latest service patches etc etc etc. Connected through linux gateway and firewall + nat ADSL to the net.

Network connectivity from windows to external addresses is flakey. Ok ish for web browsing (occasional "could not reach" / dns errors), but terminal connections drop out after about 30 seconds.

Local connections solid as a rock. Connections from any other machine to the internet (windows laptop and linux gateway) all ok. Maintaining any form of persistent external connectivity from the machine is impossible, but sessions have lasted for days from other machines (both linux and windows).

    Thoughts?

I don't think it can be the network card because local connections are fine. I don't think it can be the gateway because connections to the outside from the gateway and from other machines are fine.

Virus? But I hardly use the machine, its behind two firewalls and not directly addressable. I only browse through firefox and don't download any dodgy stuff. I have virus scanned with AVG and found no problems, and I can't see any other obvious signs of infection - hosts file unmodified, nothing unexpected trying to estabish a network connection, spybot reports no malware, no porn links magically appearing on my desktop or anything.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm tempted to do a re-install to be safe, but I would really like to isolate the problem if I can.

  16. Is it a coaster, basically?

    Date: 04/28/05     Keywords: no keywords

I burned a CD of about 250-300 pictures (about 30MB total) using Nero... Everything appeared to be going well until the very end. All of the pictures burned successfully, but as I was trying to save it (wanted to do a multisession disk) the program froze on me and I had to give it the "3 finger salute" Does that mean that I will not be able to burn anything else onto that disk since I wasn't able to save anything?

Also, am I able to delete the pictures that DID save to it?

  18. Let me introduce myself.... & then ask a question.

    Date: 04/27/05     Keywords: google

    Greetings,

I'm a geek. I started out on a TI-99 writing BASIC programs (first out of a book, then writing my own at the age of 3. Yeah, I couldn't type very well, more like a hunt and peck back then... but it got me there.)

I just wanted to introduce my geeky self before I asked this question. Get ready....

I have an Athlon 64, which right now is running windows 2003 server enterprise 64.... but my problem is that I can't find any applications that can utilize my cpu... I've done searches all over google, but to no avail.... Have any programs for the 64bit processors been written? If so, where can I get them? I'm not asking for pirated stuff, freeware or even stuff I could buy would be nice to know about. Also, are there any games that have been recompiled for these processors? It'd be nice to play some Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 with the full potential of this chip realized.

Thanks for any info anyone can throw my direction... I know it's a long shot.
