Port Forwarding & Linux
Date: 08/26/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: web, linux
Anybody here have some experience with setting up a dedicated Linux Unreal Tourmanent server? I'm having some trouble with mine that might just be a result of me not knowing much about Linux. I will put everything behind a cut since this isn't really a general computer question and many might wish to scroll past it.
Here's the scoop:
I am running UT GOTY (436 patch) on Windows XP SP2. I have cable internet, and my home network is routed through a DLink DI-524 router.
Yesterday I was playing an internet game, hosted on my machine. I have the port forwarding set up on my router so that port 7777 was forwarded to the machine I was playing on. My friend was able to connect to my game by using the IP that the outside world sees for me. All was good.
Today I decided to set up a dedicated server on my Debian Linux box. I got the server and everything installed and running. It works fine. I changed the port forwarding on the router to point 7777 to the linux box instead of the windows box. I also set up port forwarding on 7778 for the server web admin.
The problem is this:
I'm not able to connect to the server from the windows box using the outside world IP address. I can get in and play on it just fine if I use the local IP that I have assigned to it on my LAN, but it cannot be accessed outside my LAN.
So, can anybody tell me why it doesn't appear to be forwarding the ports? Is there something different I have to do with Linux for port forwarding to work?

Firefox problem

Hello,
I hope you can help me with a problem. :) I just upgraded to Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050813 Firefox/1.0.4 (Debian package 1.0.4-2sarge2), through the (for Debian) normal apt-get sequence. But now 'close tab' seems to equal 'close Firefox', which seriously affects my browsing experience (this is the third time I try to get this posted, I accidently closed the browser twice).
Is there something I can do except wait for a new update?

cpanel and hotlink protection?
Date: 08/27/05
(Web Development) Keywords: linux
Hello!
I haven't used cpanel in awhile (my host had a custom control panel), but have just changed hosts and am now back to it.
Problem so far is with hotlink protection. I tried enabling the option within cpanel and I've tried inputting several options directly into htaccess (which is how I did it before). But so far no luck. I seem to recall having this problem last time I used cpanel too, but I don't think I knew much about htaccess then, so I'm not sure if it is related or not.
I've tried so far:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?equinessence.com(/)?.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?equinessence.net(/)?.*$ [NC]

RewriteRule .*\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|bmp)$ http://www.equinessence.com [R,NC]
The host is using Linux Red Hat 9.0 if that makes a difference. And I am putting .htaccess in the right folder, so that's not the issue.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

ATI Radeon problem
Date: 09/05/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: linux
I've stumbled upon this & can't work anything out.
I've just gotten a new video card, an ATI Radeon 9600. I installed it on my motherboard (with some hassle since the previous one got stuck) and switched on the computer. Since my previous card was a Radeon 9200, there was no need to reinstall the drivers. However. Small grayscale text (or anything of that sort) is dark green instead of its proper grays.
I have tried the following, but the problem still persists...
* two different Win98 systems
* a Gnoppix live CD
* installing the latest Windows drivers
* driver gamma
* Adobe Gamma
* some Linux gamma thing whose name I can't recall (it's past 2 AM here)
My monitor is a Belinea 19", if that's relevant.
Thanks for your time!

MSSQL scares me

(SQL Server) Keywords: mysql, database, sql, postgresql, web, linux, microsoft
(my background)
Using MySQL and PostgreSQL on FreeBSD and Linux machines
(the problem)
I have four databases (actually MDF and LDF files) from a client. They want to know if they can extract data from the four databases by year and place them in to individual databases. This sounds ok, but I am new to Microsoft's SQL server. I sacrificed one of my personal dev machines and installed 2k3 Enterprise and 2000 SQL server. Created new databases with the same name as the files and then replaced the new files with the original ones from the client. Super.
Now what?
Again my background is in the command line/web front end so I am running a little blind. What is the simplest way to see the data in each database? What are some _quality_ sites I can read (because googling information you have no idea about takes time to filter out the bs).

Corrupt WinXPHome Mup.sys
Date: 09/08/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: linux, microsoft
I installed Ubuntu (Hoary Hedgehog) Linux on my Dell Dimension 4600. It originally came with WinXPHome. I made it dual-boot. Grub was installed to the master boot record to make Ubuntu work. I didn't like that it defaulted to Ubuntu. Later, I developed a dislike for Ubuntu because it didn't feel enough like Windows for me and I was much faster in Windows.
So... I decided that I wanted to remove Grub and restore the Windows boot record. Someone in ubuntu_users said to fdisk /mbr
to fix it.
I tried that. It said that it successfully did it. The drive is bootable to CD. The drive is also bootable to floppy. The drive is bootable to itself, but WinXPHome has a corrupt file and dies in the initialization process.
I have a WinXPPro laptop available to me. But no cables to be able to hook it up.
I have a WinME desktop available to me. But it cannot see the NTFS partition.
I have an iBook that I'm using to type this post. But that won't help.
There are files on the NTFS partition that I might want. But I cannot view them.
I've tried using the Recovery program on both an XPPro disc that I have, as well as the XPHome disc that came with the Dell. I am able to log into the program. I can view files in the root and files in the Windows directory. I can copy files in either of those directories over to a secondary hard drive hooked up to the machine. I cannot however cd
into any other directories. It says that access is denied.
There is more whining about this matter in my journal if you are so inclined.
So... ideas? I play on my computer all day. It keeps me sane. I need to find a job, but that is proving to be difficult.
Thanks for your time.
Edit: Oh. I think I also fried the Dell's power supply. x.X
WinXPHome is repaired. Tried activating, didn't work, called MS automated number, didn't work, called MS person, didn't work, solution is to call Dell and have them give me either a new number or a new disc. I hate Microsoft. A lot.

Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is Out
Date: 09/09/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web, linux
For those of you (and me), who are anxious to see what Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is like, we have good news. This afternoon, the Mozilla people finally announced the download site of said product. Their brief announcement said, "Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is now available for download. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is a beta release of our next generation Firefox browser and it is being made available to our early adopter community and our developer and testing community. Current users of Mozilla Firefox 1.0.x should not download or use Deer Park Alpha 2."
"Note: Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is not the final release of our Web browser, it has been made available for testing purposes only, with no end-user support. If that sounds scary, you'd probably be better off with the latest version of Firefox 1.0."
Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is available for:
1. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 for Windows (English)
2. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 for Linux (English)
3. Deer Park Alpha 2 for Mac OS X (English)
I couldn't download web site for version in other languages. Perhaps tomorrow this problem will be fixed.
The download link is: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/
Enjoy,
Omar.-

OK
now last week i was going around to yardsales
that people were having and i found some guy selling computer parts
so i asked how much
turns out he was selling a whole computer
1.6 Ghz
60G HD
idk RAM
and also threw in some
unknown cards too (sound, modem, and something i cant figure out)
long story short (too late)
the guy said the only thing wrong was that he fried the BIOS
by having it in the HOME position instead of the WORK? position
but he was willing to give it to me for 25 bucks so i bought it
i figured the worst that can happen is i blew 25 bucks
on what would eventually function as a table
but i still wanna see if i can get it to work
so he's the nOObness
1.where can i get a BIOS chip?
(i imagine you cant just go out ad buy
one you have to order)
2.is ANY BIOS chip ok?
3.how do i install it?
4.then what?
id like to have this computer
as a backup because i also have a nice
9200 ATI card and another 60G HD i found
that id like to throw in it
and i was thinking on having on HD be WIN98
(for older games)
and one be LINUX
can someone please help me
on this because i know your all guru's
it would be much appreciated and
ill buy you a soda or something (haha)
thanks in advance!!

Ok, so I have a huge problem. I have a dual boot system running Suse&Windows XP. I can boot to the boot loader but after that nothing happens. If I try to boot to my Linux partition I just get a blank screen, if I boot to the Windows partition I get the following message; "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys". It gives me the option to do a rescue w/ the windows cd but when I try it just won't boot. I really need the files off the computer, if someone can help I will be very greatful.
Thanks,
Skrillz

I am looking for a Free or Cost Effective Network Monitoring package. It can run on either Windows 2000 Server or FreeBSD/Linux preferred. Right now I love the fact that if there is a virus outbreak or my firewall is compromised, or we have a “spyware/greyware” problem I get an email stating this right to my Treo. I would love for something to monitor services on various servers or even if the servers are up and running. Internally we have apache, samba and DNS. Externally I need to monitor FTP, Apache, DNS, Sendmail. These neverreally fail but would like to keep an eye on them, and actually if the server itself has a problem and goes down. We also have a 2K server running various applications here my concern is if the server is really up more or less.
