Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me with a couple of issues I'm having with Word. I'm using Word 2000, 9.0.3821 SR-1. I cannot afford to upgrade to a newer version at this time.
1) For about a year now, one of my menus has been going wonky. I've put a screen cap of what it looks like here. I don't ever use Mail Merge, but I use Word Count all the time. It started with two mail merge options showing up, then kept increasing. It's been at that many for several months now. It doesn't seem to be interfering with anything unless it's part of a wider problem that's causing crashes. I've searched online help files several times over the months but can't seem to find appropriate search terms to get me a decent result. Anyone have any idea what's doing that and how/if I should stop/fix it? I ran an installation repair and that didn't do anything.
2) I get a lot of crashes if I've opened and closed several documents within a session (say, going through my chapters and doing word counts). This inevitably messes up the "normal.dot template" and it always yells at me to replace that, and/or freezes me out of my documents until I reboot. I save frequently so it's rare that I lose much data, but it's a real hassle to constantly have to reboot. I found a tutorial about six months ago about a normal.dot issue and ran the installation repair for that, and that fixed it for awhile, but now it's back. I do have a different normal.dot from the standard, as I prefer to work in Arial 10 as opposed to TimesNR 12.
3) Referring to the normal.dot above, even though I've set that to be Arial 10, my documents frequently want to lapse into TNR 12. Have I set the normal.dot wrong?
4) This last issue is something I've hunted for solutions for forever and never found. The scroll speed is WAY TOO FAST. If I want to highlight half of a page, and scroll the mouse up or down to do that, it jumps multiple pages at a time. I need to do this frequently to move blocks of text around, find out the word count of one new block, etc. It's a major pain in the butt to try to adjust a hair's breath of movement to just capture what I want. Is there a way to slow down the scroll speed in just Word? I am aware that I can set mouse speeds for the whole computer, but it's perfectly fine in everything except Word.
Thanks to anyone who can provide advice. I've been reluctant to ask these questions on my own LJ or in some other groups because whenever I do all I get is a lecture about why I should buy a Mac or port to Linux or some other completely unhelpful, rude response along those lines.
