  3. Server 2003 Reference Book needed

Date: 07/21/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: microsoft

Does anyone have a Server 2003 book on their desk right now that is worthy of a recommendation?
I've narrowed down what I think would be good to 3 choices:

    1. Group Policy, Profiles, and Intellimirror for Windows 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 - Jeremy Mmoskowitz

    2. Microsoft Windows Server 2003: Administrator's Pocket Consultant - William R. Stanek

    3. Mastering Windows Server 2003 - Mark Minasi

Mmoskowitz's book looks really interesting so I think I'll get it regardless of anything else but I still would like a good overall book about Server 2003.

P.S. I am interested in administration not implementation.

  4. MS Windows: Longhorn’s Most Useful Feature Now Available in Windows XP for Free

Date: 07/21/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: microsoft

Microsoft recently claimed Longhorn will be faster than XP. The Inquirer shows how you can have that speed boost in Windows XP too. The only reason why its faster is they added a superfetch feature to the prefetcher. If you look at the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\Prefetcher you will notice in windows xp EnablePrefetcher = 3 and you will [...]

Angus McLaren at TechRepublic writes cluelessly: Anyone who claims to hate Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS or any other operating system is not a true techie or network guru. It’s this open source business model, not open source software per se, which I think proprietary companies like Microsoft and Oracle are unable to get their hands around. It’s the first great business invention of the 21st century. It’s changing the world in Internet Time.

  8. Frustration....

Date: 07/26/05 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: php, mysql, html, sql, web, microsoft, google

    Windows XP SP2
    MySQL Version -- 4.1.13
    PHP Version -- 5.0.4
    Web Server -- IIS 6.0
    Dreamweaver MX 6.1
Frustration Level -- Through the ROOF!!!

Last I posted, I was having troubles with permissions. Well, to resolve that little issue I re-install MySQl. Admin permissions are now accessible.

PROBLEM: I am unable to connect to my test server through Dreamweaver MX. I was getting the oh so helpful error message: "An unidentified error has occurred." I changed some permissions (I don't know which ones at this moment) and then I was getting the error message "HTML error code 403 forbidden". Now, I'm back to "An unidentified error has occurred." It's got to be a permissions issue but for the life of me I can't figure out which ones. I am also having an issue viewing "http://localhost/" without having to enter a password. I can view other pages on localhost just not the root. I'm sure that has something to do with my test server issue. I have gone through the MySQL manual online and offline. I scoured microsoft.com and msdn for help with the Windows permissions. I have googled all there is to google and I want to google NO MORE. I did find an article reguarding my helpful "An unidentified error has occurred" message (link - technote).

It said to install 6.1 updater for Dreamweaver MX, so I did and no change. I re-ployed the connection scripts and no change. I stopped and restarted the services and nothing. I meticulously inspected all folders that need to be accessible for the server and whatever else needs them, and no dice. I found this technote (Technote), useless. I have pretty much done everything that flipping article said and any other articles that I have found and of course no change.

So there inlays my dilemma. Where do I go from here????

  10. Is Microsoft's Genuine Advantage program good for Linux?

Date: 07/27/05 (Open Source)    Keywords: security, microsoft

Microsoft is stepping up its Genuine Advantage program, and requiring a "piracy check" for all customers who want to download patches — excepting security updates — for Windows XP. This is a great strategy... for Microsoft's competition. I don't have any figures on the number of "pirated" copies of Windows XP, but [...]

  20. certifiable.

Date: 08/03/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: technology, microsoft

Figured some of you might have an answer for these.

I’m looking into getting some Microsoft Certification. At the moment I don’t have any, but to accurately represent where I’m at, I’ve been troubleshooting on my own since Windows 3.x and I do have over a year of tech support experience at work in a Microsoft environment and I definitely have a knack for understanding the processes involved in modern technology, not so much in coding, but I’m defiantly willing and expecting to learn.

Anyway, I’m about a year and a half away from my bachelors (when I finally decide to go back and finish) and I wanted to know what is the latest and greatest as far as certification goes? Considering my current education and experience what the best route for me? Does MS offer this certification themselves? Are there schools out there (I live in New Orleans, the IT un-Mecca)? Is it better to do this online? What sort of damage are we looking at here as far as costs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
