Anyone have any suggestions for an alternative to Windows Photo Gallery for Vista? Microsoft seriously should have stuck with image & fax viewer. Anything that looks similar to it, or if there's a way to port it over to Vista is fine. Photo Gallery is just too heavy to do its job. =/

A little help...
Date: 08/09/07
Keywords: security
Need a bit of help from the geek masses...
I need to find a way to allow a standard user in Windows XP to configure their network settings, including the advanced NIC settings (link speed in particular). Here are the details...
- A Group Policy solution is kinda out of the question as it stands right now.
- I don't think that Local Security Policy allows for this.
- Possible registry hack out there?
- This is the only narrow area where we want to elevate standard user rights.
I've hit a bit of a wall on this. Possible? Impossible? Hep me out!

Question on file sharing
Date: 08/07/07
Keywords: software
At home, I have a desktop PC running Windows XP (home) and it is networked with a laptop running Windows Vista. I also have a cable Internet connection with a Linksys wireless router connecting the two computers. Now, normally I have no problems. The setup was easy and using it is usually a breeze. One of the problems that I've had was with file sharing. I turned on file sharing for both of my "Documents" folders on both machines. When I go to the laptop and go to access the documents folder (that's located on the desktop PC) over the network, I usually (not always, but usually) can see the shared folder. From there, I can access all of the subfolders and files with no problems, whatsoever. I have an excellent signal with the router so I know that can't be causing any problems.
The main problem I have is when I use the desktop PC to access the shared folder (on the laptop) I can't see it at all. I made sure in the settings that file sharing is turned on and still I can't see the folder. I went to the router's software and it detects the laptop perfectly. I have a great connection with the two computers but I can't seem to access the laptop's shared folder through the PC. I'm sure it's a simple solution; Maybe a setting that I need to change. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do???
Thank you in advance.

problem uninstalling programs in Vista
Date: 07/26/07
Keywords: no keywords
My girlfriend just got a new notebook computer a few weeks ago and it's running Windows Vista. I was going through her computer cleaning it up and uninstalling programs that she doesn't need. I've done it a million times to a bunch of different computer systems. When I tried uninstalling a few programs on her computer an error message popped up saying "setup resource not found." It happened for a few different programs and all I want is to uninstall a few programs. Does anyone know the cause of this message and how I can correct it???
Thank you.

Icon Text Backgrounds
Date: 06/28/07
Keywords: no keywords
A while ago I accidentally set my setting to have background color on the text of icons. Since then I haven't been able to get it back to the default setting (transparent background, turns blue when selected). Just to clarify, I have my problem illustrated with a screen shot behind the cut.
Basically I've been trying to fix it for a while now and I go to desktop properties, appearance, advanced appearance, "Desktop" item, then look through the colors but they don't have transparent as an option. The icon still turns blue when selected, it is just stuck on being an opaque when not. Any help here?

XP

Keywords: no keywords
So recently I let my sister and her friend use my laptop (windows xp)
When I got it back, welcome screen is different. Instead of clicking on your account/icon, it goes to a dialog on my desktop with my user name and asks for a password. Since I don't have a password, I click ok and I can log into my account... however... I want to change it back to how it used to be. I tried going into control panel, under user accounts, and the option "change the way users log on/off" but when I click on it a message pops up saying, "Client Services for Netware has disabled the welcome screen and fast user switching. To restore these features, you must UNinstall Client Services for Netware."
I tired looking up that program in my programs list, but can't find it. I tried searching for it in the whole computer... couldn't find it. What exactly is Client Services for Netware, and how do I disable it to get my welcome screen back?
Thanks a lot!
=)

Excel Question
Date: 05/30/07
Keywords: no keywords
Any excel gurus out there wanna help me with a situation?
I'm working on a document that has two main tables. Table A has columns for Contributor Name, how much time they contributed at any one date, and the individual dats of each contribution. Each row in the table is a person, a date, and a quantity of time for that date. Table B then takes that data and makes additional calculations based on time, month, and other factors.
What I'm trying to do is this: In a single cell within Table A, I need to sum the total time for each contributor within a single month. What would be the most effective formula to do this?

damn you internet explorer!

For some reason when I have more than one window open on Internet Explorer, when I'm trying to read a page, it keeps going back to the first window every 15 seconds. It's driving me crazy because I'm a "right-click-&-open-in-new-window" enthusiast but right now I can only have one window open at a time otherwise it's just impossible to read anything when the first window keeps selecting itself!

PX.dll missing
Date: 04/07/07
Keywords: no keywords
Hello again. I'm hoping to get a new graphics card today to fix my other problem, but my problem now is that, when I try to run my CD-burning program RecordNow! 6, which came with my computer, I get this error and the program doesn't start:
This application has failed to start because PX.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
Suggestions are welcome, and even encouraged. I hope I don't have to try to find my installation CDs.
Also, is there a hardware community where I also should be asking this?

Where has the text disappeared from the bottom of the thumbnails that tells you which each icon is? It just started doing it randomly this evening and restarting the laptop hasn't made a difference.
I can get it back by right click--->view--->changing it briefly to tiles/list/details, then re-selecting thumbnails. But as soon as I close the window, the next time I open one up again it goes back to being blank where there should be text...
the "remember each folder's view settings" option is checked in control panel --> folder options --> view

Need a new graphics card
Date: 03/31/07
Keywords: no keywords
I have a Dell Dimension 8300 which has a ATI Technologies Radeon 9800 graphics card. The card has a little fan, and I don't think it's keeping it cool enough. Anyway, my picture has four up&down lines in it now, and different effects in different resolutions and or color depths.
I think I need a new graphics card. I have messed with computers since the late seventies, but not the insides of them, so I'm pretty clueless.
Can you leave me some clues or point me to some? I'd like to fix this ASAP.
Thanks comrades.

Vista help needed
Date: 03/16/07
Keywords: software, microsoft, google
Hello all. I'm about to ask three really dumb questions, but I'm not a computer whiz, so please bear with me.
I just upgraded from XP to Vista. Mistake number one, as I did it by myself.
So... after a rocky installation, I have the following problems:
1) It erased all my software. I can locate things like Word and Excel, but it tells me they aren't configured. Is there a way to do this without re-installing the software? I ask because I'm far away from the installation disks right now (at school, discs are at mum's).
2) My sound isn't working. When I attempt to do anything involving sound, I get the following message: "The computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio Service is not enabled. Would you like to enable the Windows Audio Service?" And I click 'Yes' and it takes me to the Sound menu. There, it says my VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller is working and enabled. There is no option to enable the Windows Audio Service though... any thoughts?
3) My Windows Live Messenger doesn't work. Apparently the system is stable and running, but I keep getting the following error code when I attempt to log in: "81000314". According to my google search, this might mean that Softpub.dll may have become unregistered. It suggests to register softpub.dll. Any insight into how I might go about doing this?
I appologize if these are really elementary questions... but I'm stumped. I've run available updates and searched the internet and microsoft.com at length, but no one is speaking my language (read: Dumb).

windows vista problem
Date: 03/16/07
Keywords: no keywords
i just installed vista a few hours ago, and im dual booting with xp and i need some help.
ive got four harddrives on my computer.
one "system" drive, and three for music/films/etc.
i set one of the three other drives as the "documents" folder on vista, the same way it is set on my xp account. now i cant access any of the files on the drive through vista. ive restored the original location of the vista documents folder, but i still get an error saying i dont have the right permissions to access the files on the particular drive. is there anything i can do, because i can access files on the other two harddrives, so i think it has to be connected with moving the vista documents location. thanks!

how to hide desktop icons
Date: 02/12/07
Keywords: web, seo
I just updated to Windows XP, and I need some help. In 98SE, it is possible to hide the desktop icons by switching over to web active view. Is there a way to hide all desktop icons in XP? Thanks for any help. :)
EDIT: Argh, sorry to bother you all. I figured it out. For future reference to anyone trying to attempt the icon-hiding maneuver: right-click on the desktop, mouseover Arrange Icons By, and left-click Show Desktop Icons.

Wrong Time
Date: 02/01/07
Keywords: web
Hello, everyone. This is my first post. How do I stop my computer (Windows XP Home Edition) from arbitrarily going back an hour in time / having the clock stop when I close the laptop? I'm CONSTANTLY having to reset the clock as it randomly messes up every 20 minutes or so. I read something on the Windows website about this happening with a certain time zone, but I'm only dealing with PST and EST, so I'm not sure if it applies to me. It annoys me most because it messes up when I'm listening to music on Last.fm and the tracks don't scrobble. Anyway, thanks for any help you may be able to provide.
