removing search engines from the search bar

is there an easy way to remove engines from the search bar?
while i'm attempting to streamline my life (or at least my
computer), why can't i flipping uninstall internet explorer?
every time i sign on to netzero it switches ie as my default
browser, & i end up having to switch it back to firefox when
i run it. i'm so sad & pathetic...
