micrapera? (first post, cross posted, sorry)
Date: 12/26/05
Keywords: microsoft, google, shopping
hi, i'm new here *waves*
so slashdot has pointed to articles rumoring that opera is being / has already been bought by microsoft.
okay, stop screaming. this is following another reported rumor last week that google was about to buy out opera, which fortunately opera themselves laughed off as false, as they also did with this (even more ridiculous) rumor here, here and here, so we can all sleep well tonight.
there's even a hilarious poll asking opera fans to vote on who the next comany to be rumored opera shopping will be here. they need to add microsoft (microsopera? microsoft internet oxplora? how about micrapera?) to the list.
which makes me wonder:
exactly what would a micrapera bastardized half-breed broswer be like?
i imagine lots and lots and lots of completely unnecessary and ridiculous features no one uses while they'd take out all the useful ones. maybe they'd hide them under eighteen million extra (ugly) buttons and menus. when micrapera would crash (and it would of course) so would your computer and everyone else's computer on your neighborhood, and maybe your printer would get possessed by the devil. the opera logo would be changed to a blue O with a hoop around it like an orbit. maybe the 404 error would be replaced by a blue screen, or maybe a red one? oh and it would come preloaded with a worm or two. i don't know.
i'm too creeped out now, so feel free to add to the list :-)

Can't open new pages
Date: 12/11/05
Keywords: no keywords
I installed XP (Home, SP2) on our laptop a couple of days ago, along with Opera 8.51
Now when I try to open a link in a new page, it overwrites the current page.
Even going through the menu (File->New Page) just overwrites the current page with a blank one.
I'm pretty sure it was working OK at first but today my wife's noticed this problem.
I've compared the settings to the version (also 8.51) that's running just fine on Win2k and I can't see any difference. I thought it might be the "Reuse existing page" option but that's the same (i.e. ticked) on the Win2k version too.
How can I convince Opera to go back to our beloved tabbed setup before my wife kills me for messing with the laptop?
/If it ain't broke, keep updating it until it is.
Update: Don't worry - I renamed the application data folder (Application Data\Opera) and ran Opera; it went to the usual Getting Started page and I could open new pages just fine. Must have been something in the .INI file [goes off to compare them] ... That's odd - the only difference that looks relevant is that the old/broken .INI file contains "New Window=1" but the new/working one doesn't. I've post the whole differences listing as a comment in case anyone's interested.

Make it stop!
Date: 12/09/05

More and more people are adding auto-play audio/video to their websites & blogs in the mistaken belief that "it's cool". No, sorry people, it's just plain annoying. Trouble is that you often don't know that it's downloading until it's too late.
Is there a plugin (or any other way) to block these annoying audio/video clips? Not the whole website, just the noise. Ideally prevent the download (these clips can be quite large) but failing that, just don't start playing automagically.
Part of the problem is that I'm looking at a lot of new blogs as I accumulate credits with BlogClicker, BlogExplosion and BlogTraffic - even though some of them offer an option to skip sites with audio it's down to the blog's author to identify their site as having such content, and many just don't do it.

My First Reinstall
Date: 12/09/05
Keywords: no keywords
I reinstalled Windows today. Things had just got to a point where I felt it needed it.
Before doing it, I backed up C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Application Data\Opera and all subdirectories.
After doing it, I reinstalled Opera, then restored the back up.
Unfortunately, that hasn't restored Opera to its prior state. It still looks and acts like a "virgin" Opera install.
What have I failed to do?
Thanks,

Refreshing pages from saved session
Date: 11/30/05
Keywords: browser
Please advise, is there an option to refresh pages of a session that is opened on browser start-up? I want to see my LJ Friends page refreshed, not the way I left it yesterday! Please don’t tell me to refresh the page: should I also refresh other 9 pages? Some monkey business… Changing Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> History -> Cache option to Always or Every 5 min hasn’t help.
In an ideal situation I’d like to control page by page for each saved session, whether I want it refreshed every time session is loaded or displayed from cache.
Opera version 8.50 Russian. I have browsed through the FAQ, KB but with no success.
Thanks in advance!

Please explain:
Date: 11/01/05
Keywords: no keywords
I've just installed and customized Opera so that it almost meets my Mozilla-based standards. My one issue is with the current layout of the toolbars, the address bar in specific. Is there a way (and if so, would you please explain how) to move the toolbars? My Win98SE taskbar, for example, allows me to move the Quick Launch toolbar anywhere I want. This includes docking the toolbar on the left or right side of the screen, and, more importantly, it also includes placing the toolbar above or below or to the left or right of where the currently open programs appear. Is such possible with Opera? I know I can move the toolbars to the right/left/bottom side of the window, but I haven't found a way to place them side by side or to change their vertical alignment.
I'd be grateful for any help in this area.

Small layout gap in Opera at 1024x768
Date: 10/31/05
Keywords: browser, css
I've been experimenting with the positioning of various sections of a layout, prior to adding actual content and my own styling to it, and have come across something that's baffling me.
This is the testpage in question. The pages does what it's supposed to at this point in time in Opera at 800x600 and 1280x1024, but in 1024x768, a narrow gap emerges between the left section (coloured in red) and the header, content and footer sections on the right of the page. This gap doesn't appear in either IE or Firefox at any of those three resolutions.
Using the zoom control in my default screen resolution, I discovered once again that only enlarging the page to certain sizes caused the problem. Here's a zoomed-in screenshot to illustrate the problem.
Now, sure, I'm still learning how to use CSS effectively, but this gap (which shows up in both Opera 7.54 and Opera 8.5) confuses me. So, is it my coding that's at fault or is it an interesting glitch in Opera? (If others can't replicate the gap on their browsers, I'll assume it's a peculiarity of my monitor's default settings, and apologize profusely for wasting people's time!)

Map of Opera Browser Users
Date: 10/28/05
Keywords: browser
From Opera Watch:
Are you an Opera browser user? Add yourself to the map of Opera users.
To add yourself to the map, you need a name, city or zip, and a shoutout (a comment).
You could also upload a photo; I was thinking that this would be a great way to see the Opera browser layouts and skins of other users, so upload a screenshot of your browser to the map.
Map yourself, what are you waiting for?

Merlin (Opera 9)

Keywords: software, css, web

Opera 9 preview is availiable for download from today. check it out
I'm using it now and it fixes for just about everything that was even remotely wrong with Opera before.
Rich text editing now works (try it updating LJ); flash doesn't overlap things it shouldn't; IMAP is actually useful; support for XSLT/webforms/CSS3 selectors; even more configurable (opera:config)... the list goes on.
It completely blows Firefox out of the water.
Seriously, you want it.
(if you do download it, be sure to back up everything - despite being very stable, this is still technically pre-beta software. Use at your own risk!)

Full screen (F11) mode loses CSS style
Date: 10/06/05
Keywords: linux
I've been working on the style sheet for my blog and I've got a problem - the style is fine in normal viewing mode but if I hit F11 (to go to Full Screen) it's displayed more like Print Preview mode; hitting F11 again returns it to the correct style.
I have this problem with Opera 8.5 on both Fedora Linux and Windows 2000; I don't see the problem (i.e. it behaves as expected) with Firefox on FC3+Win2k and IE6 (spit!) on Win2k. (That's all the combinations I have available for testing.)
Any ideas? Does Opera use a different media type in Full Screen mode? (Sounds odd but that's all I can come up with.)
