1. Sticking with 8.54...

    Date: 06/26/06     Keywords: no keywords

...unless someone knows how to get around this.

I installed Opera 9 (with the classic installer) into a separate folder. I want to like it, but there's one new behavior that drives me bonkers. I have it configured to ask me about cookies. If I open a page in the background, and that page sets a cookie, Opera 9 gives focus to that page when the ask-about-cookie dialog pops up.

  2. Mac Opera 9 cannot load any pages and locks up totally

    Date: 06/25/06     Keywords: no keywords

I have Mac OS 10.2.8 and have downloaded Opera 9 twice and installed it four times and it won't do anything. I have to go to 'force quit' in the apple menu to shut it down as it totally locks up. It even locks up if I get it to start up with a blank page. That initial dialogue box works, but after that it's nothing.

Oddly, it did work fine the first time I downloaded it, last night, but since then that version and subsequent downloaded/installed versions won't work at all. I can't go back to my older version as foolishly I deleted it thinking Opera9 would work.

Anyone else experienced this? Or heard of other cases? I've checked the Opera forum and there is no other reports. I'm meaning to join up there and post, but for now with time constraints I'll ask here.

Thanks if you can give any ideas or point to any discussion of something like this elsewhere.

It's out as so far as I can tell, I like it... though it's starting to look like Firefox, are they going to introduce extentions as well?

  5. To DivX.com

    Date: 06/05/06     Keywords: no keywords

Why is Firefox included in the download of the DivX installer?

I could have saved you guys 5MB of bandwidth and told you before I downloaded the installer that I didn't want Firefox. Just imagine the savings in bandwidth if you just took out Firefox that has almost nothing to do with Dvix, encoding, playback or otherwise.

Is it some sort of whack advertising? It annoys me that it's not even mentioned before the download that it includes firefox. How about a warning, or even better, a version w/o firefox in it.

For various reasons, things like this shouldn't happen. It's a cheap trick to try to get more people to use Firefox. If firefox is going to gain more users, perhaps it should do so through it's merits, not by getting included in something that's not even related.

It's almost just as bad as RealMedia including all of their other 3+ programs when you only wanted one thing from them. The only thing that keeps DviX (installer) out of that shitlist is that it didn't install other programs w/o my consent.

It's bad enough it's automatically on "install" and you have to take action & opt-out. I'm sure it's gotten a few unwanted installs because of it.

So when is DviX going to include the latest version of WinRAR? How about AdAware? No better yet, Open Office. Yeah, include Openoffice.org into your installer, okay? Might as well, right?

  6. Odd Feelings about IM's

    Date: 05/20/06     Keywords: yahoo, google

This is off-topic, but I figured that people here would know a thing or two about IM's as well...

How come whenever I'm looking for a replacement for a 3rd party IM client (like Trillian or Gaim) I always fret about what I'm going to be getting myself into? Thus far, I've been perfectly happy with 3rd party clients. But they can be somewhat spotty with their file-transfer, voice & video service.

But every time I look at ICQ, Yahoo, MSN or AIM; I always feel like I'm about to sell my soul or something. I know that I'm going to get a bunch of ads with ICQ & AIM. I think I've gotten a little spoiled with the 3rd party ad-freeness. With Yahoo I'm not looking forward to all the extra stuff I'm never going to use. And with MSN, I fear the whole 'Big Brother' thing.

They all kind of share the ads, 'big brother' & too many useless extras feel. It's the main reason I've always gone with a 3rd party. Plus I have friends on all then networks, and I can't pick just one to go with. It's kind of messed up in a way, splitting up the world like that by creating so many different IM standards that do not talk with eachother.

I've tried out a few other great programs:
Hello is an IM and a image sharing program. All encrypted so it's really safe.
Skype is a P2P Voice & Text program. Also encrypted, very safe.
Google Talk is kind of like Skype, but stripped down.

The problem with these programs is that no one really uses them, for one reason or another. I would have figured that Skype would have really taken off, but all the other IM programs are seeing how they've fallen way behind, so now they are starting to offer things that Skype has. Google Talk is very streamlined, but you have to have a Gmail account to use it, which I guess is the problem for most people getting into it. And Hello, while functioning very well as an IM program, is mostly about sharing pictures.

So, I am at a loss. All the 1st party popular IM programs feel like they are draining my soul. All the non-pop 1st party IM programs are not used enough. All of the 3rd party IM programs have too many bugs or weirdnesses in them.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I'm willing to try about anything. Maybe I'm just being overly odd about this, perhaps one of the popular first party IM programs are okay. Can someone give me the low-down?

    Thanks. (x-posted in my journal)

  7. The 'New' Pop-up.. that apparently Opera can't see?

Date: 05/02/06     Keywords: software, browser, html, java

    http://www.tomshardware.com/site/intellitxt.html

"What if you can't see it?"
The Intellitxt software only operates on Internet Explorer browsers, version 5 and above, Netscape 7.2 and above, andFirefox .8 and above. So, Mac users and Opera lovers will just have to believe them that it's there!

    http://shokuji.info/temp/Toms_Ads.png

What version of Opera are these guys using? I mean, 8.54 gets them just fine; though I wish I couldn't see them.

    http://shokuji.info/temp/Toms_Ads2.png

This little plague is the new pop-up. It runs on Javascript and actually slows down the page a bit. Plus it uses mouse overs to pop up this little bastard of a advertisement.

this sounds like a stupid question but i'd really like to know:

why is gmail basically total ass in opera? i hate having to use firefox for gmail and livejournal updating in rich text mode, especially at work where we have impersonal dumb terminals that lots of different people use interchangably. so what's the deal with gmail on opera?

  10. Auto-detect proxy settings?

    Date: 04/22/06     Keywords: no keywords

How can I tell Opera (8.54 on WinXP) to "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network", which is the only way I can get Firefox to work on our corporate network. I can see (in Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Proxy Settings) that I can set up specific proxy info, but I don't have that info - both IE [/spit] and Firefox are simply set to auto-detect.

  11. stupid freedom of the press

    Date: 04/22/06     Keywords: software

That all sounds very nice but Firefox users who have been spoiled by lightning fast browsing performance will need more than bells and whistles to be convinced to switch. On the other hand, if performance is merely a beta issue, then Opera 9 is well worth a look.

This sounds like someone who has no idea how to test software but who likes to hear himself talk/write anyway. Or maybe I'm wrong. Is there some "speed" metric by which Firefox does some trivial task faster than Opera these days?

  12. LJ and various Opera versions

    Date: 03/24/06     Keywords: browser, css

This is an attempt to be helpful, in case someone comes to this community looking for help on Opera+LJ. Also because these questions come up in LiveJournal support and I'm trying to save the trouble from both users and volunteers. ;)

I'm sure many Opera users have noticed that various versions of Opera have various bigger or smaller issues with commenting on LiveJournal. Some of these you can fix, some you can't.

Opera 7.x cannot use LJ quickreply, that is, the comment box opened directly under whatever you are replying to. This is not fixable, because 7.x doesn't support the necessary JS. LJ will fall back to normal comment behavior and open a new page.

Opera 8.x cannot use LJ quickreply either, but it can be fixed with this UserJS file. It's caused by a bug in Opera itself. LJ will fall back to normal comment behavior and open a new page without the UserJS file.

Opera 9tp1 cannot use quickreply, because the devs apparently broke something else while fixing the bug. ;) I have not tried this version myself, but from what I've gathered, when attempting to use quickreply you get the error "Unknown journal". Using the aforementioned UserJS script should fix quickreply, and also disabling quickreply entirely should cause permanent fallback to normal comment behavior and fix the problem. (To disable quickreply, enter set disable_quickreply 1 in the Admin Console while logged in.)

Opera 9tp2 fixed all these issues and quickreply should function correctly out-of-the-box.

I do not know the status of weekly builds on this issue.

As for some other problems on LJ...

In login forms, the LJ user icon, the small head, hides some of the text in most Opera versions. This is because Opera interprets the relevant CSS differently from other browsers, and it has been fixed in O9tp2. (Note though that it doesn't affect login form functionality in any way.)

The rich text editor does not work in Opera. LJ recently switched to using FCK editor, which does not have support for Opera 9 (O8 does not support RTE in any case). I am told that FCK and Opera devs at least were working on getting them to cooperate.

    For paid users...

The S2 layer editor is, to put it nicely, FUBAR. Horribly slow, doesn't recognize all keypresses, the edit textarea is about 20 characters wide, and so on. To be honest the editor is a great big failure in many browsers. I can only suggest trying other browsers until you find one that happens to work, or edit your layers in a text editor and pasting them in the editor whole. If someone knows a way to fix the editor with UserJS or other measures, please do share!

The ScrapBook "Annotate" page, which you get for example just after uploading a new image, has issues - the description box is about two pixels wide. You can still edit descriptions by going to Manage picture instead of Annotate. I'm not aware of a way to fix this, if you know one, please share. :)

Right-o. Did I miss something or make a mistake? Do you know of a way to fix some issue here, or information on how something behaves in a different Opera version? Do comment. I hope this is of some help to other Operaists on LJ. :)

    Hey!

I would like to make http://freekat.com/ an option for the search bar, in fact, I'd like to make it default to replace Google. I don't know how to edit the search.ini file, meaning I don't know what to replace with what. I know there are some useless search engines in there that I could replace, but I don't know the specifics of what to put in. Does anyone here know how I can do this?

Very cool, imo! =D Anyone else notice this and use it?

    Hey all,

Opera have started releasing weekly builds of the desktop browser every friday for public testing, etc. Use them if you're brave, don't install over old versions, blah blah blah.

There's already new builds for you Windows and Mac people to play with if you want. File lots of bug reports and make Opera better :)

They're announced here and I've set up a LiveJournal syndication at '[info]'opera_weekly to make life easier.

If you don't read Operawatch or ZDNet, Opera 9 TP2 coming out "on Tuesday" - i.e. just a few hours from now.

Known new features include, but are not limited to: Tab thumbnails; BitTorrent (for a second time); and "Widgets", which could possibly be akin to Firefox's extensions. Who knows. aren't as good as I hoped, but still look pretty cool.

    Looks very interesting. :)

Keep an eye on the (also new) Opera Labs for its arrival.

  19. opera won't display Tahoma correctly anymore

    Date: 02/03/06     Keywords: no keywords

I tried looking for a solution almost everywhere, Opera forums, usenet, nothing. Maybe someone here will be able to help me :|

Well, Opera doesn't display the damn font. All was fine until... I can't tell exactly, I think it started happening some 2 weeks ago? I can't remember doing anything that could cause it.
This is how "Tahoma" looks in my Opera (v 8.51 on WinXP):

I tried reinstalling Opera (deleting all settings, leaving only bookmarks, search engines, notes and cookies), I tried running Opera with -debugfont, no good.

Firefox and IE display it fine. (I refuse to use either, though :P)

If any of you can help me, or can direct me somewhere where I can find a solution, I'd greatly appreciate.
    Huge thanks in advance.

  20. micrapera? (first post, cross posted, sorry)

Date: 12/26/05     Keywords: microsoft, google, shopping

    hi, i'm new here *waves*

so slashdot has pointed to articles rumoring that opera is being / has already been bought by microsoft

okay, stop screaming.  this is following another reported rumor last week that google was about to buy out opera, which fortunately opera themselves laughed off as false, as they also did with this (even more ridiculous) rumor here, here and here, so we can all sleep well tonight.

there's even a hilarious poll asking opera fans to vote on who the next comany to be rumored opera shopping will be here.  they need to add microsoft (microsopera?  microsoft internet oxplora?  how about micrapera?) to the list.

    which makes me wonder:

exactly what would a micrapera bastardized half-breed broswer be like?

i imagine lots and lots and lots of completely unnecessary and ridiculous features no one uses while they'd take out all the useful ones.  maybe they'd hide them under eighteen million extra (ugly) buttons and menus.  when micrapera would crash (and it would of course) so would your computer and everyone else's computer on your neighborhood, and maybe your printer would get possessed by the devil.  the opera logo would be changed to a blue O with a hoop around it like an orbit.  maybe the 404 error would be replaced by a blue screen, or maybe a red one?  oh and it would come preloaded with a worm or two.  i don't know.

i'm too creeped out now, so feel free to add to the list :-)
