    Hello!

    There's a new folksonomy software project - MyProgs.net.
You can store there list of programs you use, but the real point is something much more interesting:
You can easily find new / interesting / popular software in various categories, track after specific categories and many other things, like always knowing when your friend or colleague found another interesting program.
For example, here is my list: MyProgs.net/kuchin
There is also RSS support :)

    Date: 07/26/05     Keywords: web

Upon startup the internet worm protection says there is an error. After a few minutes the error is gone. I followed the procedure on the symantec website which instructed me to turn off worm protection, restart, turn it back on. This did not seem to fix the problem.

is it really a problem? can it be fixed? Norton has pathetic tech support.

  4. Secure Online storage - read/write access for set user group

Date: 06/22/05     Keywords: php, mysql, sql, security, web, linux, yahoo

I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.
    ideas have included:

Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want

any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.

  6. "Drive letter" Internet access (?)

    Date: 06/21/05     Keywords: software

    Hi folks,

I have several documents that I need to access from multiple workstations, at home and at work, where it would just be simpler if I could access them via an Internet file store somehow.

I'm not bothered if I need to install plug-in software to do it, or even (despite the subject) if it's not via drive letter access. Some other form of access is fine as long as the opening and saving is streamlined, and doesn't require FTP etc.

Is there such a thing available?

    TIA

What exactly does Windows XP Professional do better than Windows XP Home? Specifically networking and encryption I've read about has got my interest.

We own one computer with Home, we're buying computer number two, I know I can plug both computers into a router, and they'll share the same Internet connection. What am I missing here?

  10. generic scanner software?

    Date: 05/25/05     Keywords: software, microsoft

Is there such a thing as generic scanning software? You know, like IrfanView and GIMP are free image editing software. The UMAX 2100U user interface is terrible, was hoping for something a little more robust than the Windows XP Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard. Perhaps something crazy like multi-picture cropping, yes?

    Date: 04/03/05     Keywords: web, microsoft

Can anyone remind me what's the latest version of DirectX that is compatible with Windows 95 (original release, not OSR2), and where can I grab a copy? Microsoft has dropped support for '95 completely, can't find anything older than DX8.1 on their website, and that one requires 98/ME.

  15. Graphic question

    Date: 03/22/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm going to try and explain this as best I can. It's a little difficult without actually seeing the document open in Photoshop. Thanks in advance for any and all help! Also sorry for any x-posting.

I have Photoshop document with two layers. The bottom layer is an overhead map. The top layer is what I want to be a decorative winding path around the walkways and roads shown on the map. Right now this top layer has been created as a straight line. I want to bend it to fit around all the twists and turns of the roads of the map layer. But I do not want to distort it so the design becomes unrecognizable.

Is there a simple way to accomplish this? I tried smudge, but it completely destroys the top image. Filter-->Liquify didn't seem to work well either. (For one thing, I can't even see the map layer when I liquify.) I feel like I should be able to use paths, but is that even a possible solution for a problem like this?

Is Adobe Illustrator a better program to accomplish this in? (I know text in that program can be written on a complicated winding path.) If so, how would I go about doing it? (I'm only slightly familiar with Illustrator.) Or is some other program better?

    Thanks again!!!

    Date: 03/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm running Windows XP Professional.

I've created an account recently since other people will be using my computer for a contest this upcoming weekend. I want to limit what they see on the start menu, basically hide everything that wasn't there when Windows was installed plus the system tools. Is there anyway to do this? I also want to shut off access to the Control Panel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know much more than my friends computer is shutting down its not that he doesn't have enough ram or his video card it just locks up for no reason. Could it be the power supply? I don't know what else could be locking it up. Its a Pentium 3 with 192 with a 998 MHZ and 192 MB of ram I put more in and it still did the same thing. Its running windows XP Pro. Could his power supply cause his computer to lock up? Maybe his CPU fan and heat sink arn't doing there job well enough. Maybe he needs more cooling fans? I don't know what else could be causing it to just toally lock up. Any ideas or suggestions would be much apprciated. Windows just hangs any ideas on why it is just freezing for no apparen't reason or know a program I can run to catch the error when it freezes? I don't think the even viewer is cathing it although I'm sure it should. I can't figure out whats going on. Thanks for your help sorry again if this is to wrong for this community.
