1. Taskbar juggling

    Date: 01/31/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi folks,

I can't find a Windows community, so I'll post here.

Basically I'm just trying to juggle my Taskbar in Win XP. I use it for a *lot* of things, and it's currently 4 lines high. The first two lines are for Quick Launch icons and a link to Favorites. The third line is tasks and the Address bar. The fourth line is Links. Anyway, a picture tells a thousand words.

I would like to double the height of the fourth line to fit in more links, but however I juggle the bar around I cannot do it. I always end up with two single height bars, and one that's three high.

Perhaps it can't be done, but anyone know if it's possible to do this or can give some tips on moving this mess around? :-)

    TIA

  2. CD Editing Software?

    Date: 01/22/05     Keywords: no keywords

I used to work in a recording studio where I had a wealth of soft apps that allowed me to create CD mixes of songs. While programs like ProTools and Sonic Solutions are overkill (and way expensive) considering what I want to do, they still had the functionality I am seeking.

I want to be able to make CD mixes within an editor that allows for simple editing, such as setting in- and out- crossfades and perhaps making slight changes to the BPM if sings so that they don't sound 'trainwrecked' when flowing from one to the other. I'm not looking for DJ-like precision; I just want to be able to fade the end of one song out and fade the next one in without it sounding horrible (and hopefully w/o changing the pitch of the altered BPM track as well).

Can anyone make any (cost-effective or hell, FREE) recommendations?

Howdy. I've been trying to set up Thunderbird to view my Gmail account, and I can't seem to get it to work. I get no errors, and it even seems to be searching for the mail file, but the inbox remains blank. I've done everything that this page says to, but I'm just not receiving any mail on the client. Any ideas?

  6. Cannot reset IE homepage

    Date: 12/21/04     Keywords: web

    Hi guys,

I've been having this problem for a while and it's really getting on my nerves, and I thought this community might be able help me. My IE homepage is permanently set on www.cnn.com, even though I don't want it. When I go to Tools->Internet Options, change the homepage, click Apply, and OK, and go to Tools->Internet Options again, it shows www.cnn.com again. It's not even like it reverts back after I restart IE. I even blocked that webpage, but it is still my homepage. I tried searching for .hta files on my computer but couldn't find any. I don't know what the problem is. Could someone help me? Thanks a lot!

  8. Anyone playing SIMS2?

    Date: 11/30/04     Keywords: no keywords

I've heard that the SIMS2 has a lot of glitches. Is this true? If so, are these just glitches within the game, or do they affect your PC's performance outside of playing? Are these problems tolerable, or are they annoying enough to stop you from playing? (sorry for xposting)

  9. Controlling PCs over the Internet

    Date: 11/13/04     Keywords: software

    Hi folks,

Does anyone have any software recommendations for controlling one PC by another over the Internet?

Netmeeting is just proving to be so problematic, and doesn't cope well with any connection problem.

I am aware of VNC, but would like to find something that's a little more straightforward to use (and that my parents can cope with installing).

So I'm looking for something simple to use, that just does the job.

    Any ideas?

    TIA

Edit: Just to emphasise, this needs to be used by a very non-savvy computer user at the other end i.e. my parents, so I can help them troubleshoot problems with their PC over the Internet. Finding IP addresses etc. is just beyond their capacity, so something similar in manner of connection an IM client would probably be good (or something they can cope with).

  10. Office 2003 weirdness

Date: 11/12/04     Keywords: software, microsoft, google

    Hi folks,

Recently with Office 2003 when I start Word and FrontPage (which I use most commonly) I get a dialog with "Installing: Microsoft Office Word feature" and "Installing: Microsoft Office FrontPage feature" respectively. The program starts after a few second once the install is complete, so the software is still working at least.

It's getting increasingly annoyed though as (a) it adds to the time to start the application (b) I'm wondering why on earth it does this.

Any ideas why it's doing this? A quick Google hasn't turned up anything that I can see.

    TIA

  11. Ad-Aware?

    Date: 11/10/04     Keywords: virus

I've been getting a lot of pop-ups just today, after not having any for a very long time thanks to AOL's pop-up-stopper. I figured the best idea would be to run ad-aware repeatedly until the search comes up clean. However, I've never run this program before, and I've heard stories about Ad-Aware accidentally deleting critical files that Windows (XP in my case) needs to run.

Should I be worried about this? Even if there is a backup of the files somehow, isn't it possible that something in the registry would be deleted that would stop windows from running altogether? I also selected the advanced option for all files to be sent to the recycling bin first, but is this a guarantee that I can protect my computer from possible disaster?

Everyone I've talked to has said the risk does exist, but the benefits ultimately outweigh any of the possible bad. I already ran a Norton Virus Scan too, which came up clean. Any advice? Thanks! (sorry for x-posting)

  13. XP Service Pack 2

    Date: 10/09/04     Keywords: no keywords

Silly question perhaps, but does anyone know if SP2 includes more fixes than those that download automatically? I'm unsure if it's a roll up of the previous fixes, or has new things?

    Thanks for any help.

  14. Need Help Finding A Game...

    Date: 10/04/04     Keywords: no keywords

Hi, new here. My friends and I were talking about games we used to play back in elementary school, and we all came up with one that none of us can remember the name of.

The premise of it was that you controlled this character who was wearing a purple high collar jacket and a cap, and he was walking around a TV station with a flashlight and he had to zap these other robot... things.

I wish I had more to go on, but I don't. Anyone remember the name of that game or even a place that I could find a list of all the old games from the early to mid-nineties?

  15. SP2 issues, hanging computer, cd/dvd issues, Help????

    Date: 09/06/04     Keywords: security, virus

My mother has a computer that we ordered from tiger direct (www.tigerdirect.com) last year online, summertime. When i originally got the computer, one of the memory slots was bad so i sent it back and got a replacement. The new board has been working alright but lately there have been more and more problems popping up and i'm wondering if this is the fault of the mobo.

    Various problems include:

-DVD drive occasionally will not spin up and read disks
-CD burner refuses to burn cds
-computer randomly hangs in the middle of varying tasks

Also, upon installation of service pack 2 to winXP, it now hangs on boot and doesn't get to the logon screen. It doesn't happen all the time and it seems kind of random as to when it decides not to work. All the cables are firmly plugged in and there are no issues that i can see. Computer is definately virus free.
I'm not sure if this is all mobo related or what, but any suggestions/helpful hints/places to post these problems again would be appreciated.

    Specs:
    P4 3.06Ghz w/hyperthreading
    Via p4x400 chipset
    1GB DDR333 RAM
    GeForce 4 Ti4200
    cd drive
    dvd drive
    300 Watt PSU

The RAM is 2x512 sticks in the 1st 2 settings. Originally i got a mobo that had a faulty 1st slot and i got it replaced with the new mobo. it was fine for a couple months then started going bad. The vid driver is a NVIDIA GeForce Ti4200 version 4.2.3.0 The BIOS is the original version, not updated.

I have 2 80Gig drives in the machine as well, each has their own windows XP installation. Today, after installing windows SP2 on one of the drives, it killed windows. and by killed i mean after it tells you to restart it hung on boot on the windows XP splash screen with the little bar running along the bottom. so after backing up all the data, the drive is still readable, just can't run windows off it, i tried installing SP2 on the other drive, with the 1st drive unplugged. same problem. reinstalled windows on the 1st drive and it now works, but is horribly out of date and behind on security updates. i'm scared to now update to SP2 on this machine. Updated to SP2 on 3 other machines without a problem. Any dieas for any of these issues?

  16. Stress testing software

    Date: 09/01/04     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking for a freeware/shareware program that can simultaneously load CPU, RAM, HDD and network to the max, and do it continiously. In addition, I'd like it to be able to run over network, without installation. At the moment, I'm using a combination of Prime95, Western Digital WinDLG and AIDA32 Network Benchmark running simultaneously, but I'm unhappy with this solution - it requires installation of two programs, which leaves junk in the system, and apart from Prime95, it's not continuous.

    Any ideas?
