Displaying content in columns - alternatives to 2 div layers?

Date: 02/20/09 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, java

So, I'm working with Dynamic Drive's script, Dynamic Ajax Content, in which Javascript loads a page into a div layer when the user clicks on a link. When the page is loaded, it wipes out the old content, and puts the new page there. Here is my problem: I need to update 2 columns at a time, and I'm pretty sure you can't load 2 pages by clicking on just one link (let me know if I'm wrong; the DD forums haven't responded).

So, my question is, are there any aesthetic and structurally sound ways to display content in 2 columns (with a gutter in the middle) without using 2 div layers?

    For reference,
    here's my working index: http://plaza.ufl.edu/melanier/simplelayout/index.html
(trying to target 2 columns of content from "About/Contact" into the 2 columns on the right)
and the script I'm referring to: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex17/ajaxcontent.htm

Thank you so much for any help.
