  2. email html design headsup

    Date: 11/14/07     Keywords: html

    Just so ya'll are aware, gmail new renders email in a whole new way. Whatever new way this is totally fucked up some HTML i had functioning in it's older version.

    You can switch to view things under the previous system they had going, but I really doubt most users will care to do that, similar to how they still all use IE because that's what came with their computers.

    If anyone knows what the exact chages are, i'd love to hear them and how to solve it.

  3. Fixing type rags on the web

    Date: 11/13/07     Keywords: browser, css, database, web

    I'm currently having an argument debate at work whether it's worthwhile to nitpickingly fix uneven type rags on the web (in a fixed-width div) via line breaks, forced justification, adding spaces, changing type sizes, changing word and letter spacing with CSS (sometimes on individual lines and words), changing the size of the box, etc. much the way one would do on a print piece. My argument is that type renders with slight differences across browsers and platforms, and that trying to manipulate it so precisely is not only insanely time consuming and has to be re-done with every new page -and- every copy change change, it may not look precisely the same across different browsers and different default fonts, or even if people increase type sizes above the default, and if the type doesn't render exactly the way it does on our screens, micro-adjustments may cause even more awkward rags or spacing.

    For a large, dynamic, database-driven site, of course this would be even harder, but we're working on it for our small, static corporate site of maybe 10-20 pages that we don't expect to be updated every time. My argument is that it'll end up being a lot of time spent on something that may not work everywhere or backfire, but I'm being outvoted. I would really appreciate any experience or advice dealing with this issue, aside from making the whole thing an image or a Flash file.

    I'm posting this in both '[info]'webdesign and '[info]'graphicdesign since it's both aesthetic and technical.

    Hey all,

    I'm currently having issues with all of my CS3 programs. It won't even start up. I tried uninstalling it, but they all failed.

    Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated as I really don't feel like going back to a clean computer. Although, I will if I have to.

    Date: 11/09/07     Keywords: web

    Tell me everything you know/have heard/seen/believe/hope for with respect to enterprise-level content management systems. What companies and brands are you familiar with? Do any stand out as shining examples of all that's right and good in the world of website management?

    Every day that I come to work and attempt to do anything, really, with our sites, I want to throw my arms up and shout, "What were you thinking?!" I don't know if it comes down to needing a brand new system or just a complete overhaul of what we're using now (Serena Collage®), but something needs to change.

    It doesn't help that I am alone in being responsible for a multinational web presence representing a rapidly growing company, currently with 500 employees. The company's ass-backwards attitude about anything and everything having to do with the internet doesn't help either.

  9. Thumbnail Gallery with Closeups

    Date: 11/09/07     Keywords: browser, java

    I'm trying to build a thumbnail gallery with pretty much the exact same functionality as istockphoto has. That is, one a cursor rolls over a thumbnail, a div shows containing a larger version of the image with a position relative to the cursor position. Additionally, depending on the browser window's size, the div will have an adjusted position so that it remains in the browser window. I hope that makes sense. Just check out the search results of any istockphoto search to see what I'm talking about.

    Anyways, my javascript skills are beginner to decent (in that I can look at a script and figure out what's going on), but if anyone can point me to a tutorial on this it would help me immensely. Thanks in advance.

    Date: 11/02/07     Keywords: css

    So i posted about the suckerfish class vs id problem yesterday. I just used 2 different ID's.

    Now I thought i fixed my ie7 sticky problem. When i click somewhere on the page and then mouse over a menu the top menu drop down just sticks, but not the secondary menu.

    http://www.dmu.edu/_a/index.cfm

    I have the fix inside of a conditional comment for ie7:

    #nav li:hover, #nav li.hover {
    position: static;
    }

    #nav2 li:hover, #nav2 li.hover {
    position: static;
    }

    Anyone know why this isnt fixing the top menu from sticking?

    Thanks!

  14. Help Help HELP!

    Date: 11/01/07     Keywords: php, html, web

    Hi guys. I come to you out of desperation!

    Well, not desperation, but I am pretty dang confused.

    I just bought myself a domain recently with godaddy.com, but now I have no idea what to do with it. What I wanted to do with this domain was just to have an upload.php page available to myself only (possibly password protected or something?) so I could have a place to upload all of my art and garbage like that. I just got sick of using photobucket and crap, so I thought I'd do this.

    A friend of mine also had this setup. She had a website (also domain purchased from godaddy.com) and it wasn't... really a website. You'd go to the main page, ie www.whatever.org and it would just be a filler page she designed that said 'coming soon' and behind that, there was a url that was accessible to herself only for uploading.

    I have no idea how to achieve this. I have the php script saved as a .html document but I don't know what to do with it!

    Help?

  15. design moving out of place

    Date: 11/01/07     Keywords: html, web

    I'm working on a website based on a free design template and I've run into a problem. When I add more text to one of the pages the whole design jumps a few millimeters to the left. Take a look at the site here. Click on the "Another tab" tab to see how the design changes. Why does this happen and what can I do about it? This template is slightly out of my league when it comes to html knowledge, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  16. $100 for a webpage

    Date: 10/31/07     Keywords: css, web

    I’ve a little project in mind which requires a simple website. What I need is a single web page designed – a template, if you will – and some basic graphics (which can be royalty free/legal clipart) to accompany it.

    As this is a little project my budget isn’t huge. In fact, I think $100 is about appropriate. Whereas that’s certainly not enough for a whole website all I’m asking for here is a single page design.

    I’d prefer something done in CSS. If you like to code with accessibility in mind then that’s very much what I want.

    I’ll pay by PayPal.

    If you’re interested then please drop me an email at ‘the’ ‘at’ ‘arhg’ .net. If I get a lot of interest then I’ll probably want to see portfolios. I’ll get back to people with a little bit more detail with what I have planned.

    Thanks!

  18. Emulating XLS with a web app

    Date: 10/30/07     Keywords: html, java

    I have an application which requires signifigant data entry by end users. Batch file processing is not possible. An example of the form is below, though there are 45 columns of data to enter in the app. Numeric values for left and right text boxes

    #1
    #2
    #3

    End users want two features added to the form:

    1) Make the Enter key function as the Tab key for all input objects. To submit data they have to click with the mouse. They enter data with the numeric keypad.

    2) Allow use of up & down arrow keys to navigate vertically along the columns.  So instead of tabbing back or forward three times, they could simply arrow up/down to the box above or below.

    How feasible are these requests?   With existing javascript validation I'm already working with a bloated HTML page.  I'm afraid adding in arrow key functionality will only add to it (unless there is a simple way of doing it?)

    Thanks!

  19. places to buy domain names and web hosts

    Date: 10/29/07     Keywords: web

    I am in need of some assistance.

    I'm trying to come up with options for really good places to both host a webpage and purchase a domain name.
    I need options for a site that's more than likely not going to get very big.

    Right now I use http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net for my own website, but this'll be for someone elses, and I don't want to pick something just because I use it, even though I'm very happy with their service.

    SO, please can anyone help me with places that they've had a really good experience with?
    I would greatly appreciate it.

  20. One problem, similar to before, but different!

    Date: 10/26/07     Keywords: asp, java, google

    Ok, we've got a form where people put in their first name, last name, email address, and a five digit number. On the confirmation page, we want to return to them: the first initial of their first name and full last name and then the first initial of their first name, first initial of their last name, and the five digits they put in.

    For example, if I entered:
    First Name: Brittany
    Last Name: Jackson
    5 Digits: 12345

    I would want returned:
    bjackson
    bj12345

    We are using Javascript for it, and where it previously worked, it suddenly stopped working. Thanks to all of your wonderful suggestions and help, I now have it working in Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari, but it won't work in Netscape or Firefox and I'm not sure why. I have searched and googled it, but haven't come up with an answer.

    On the form page, the javascript we have in the header is (with the script type="text/javascript" in the appropriate < >'s, of course:

    //script type="text/javascript"
    function verify(forms) {
    var errors='';
    if ((document.forms.first.value == "") || (document.forms.last.value == ""))
    errors+="Please enter your first and last name.\n";
    if (errors){
    alert(errors)
    return false;}

    fa = document.forms.first.value.charAt(0);
    la = document.forms.last.value.charAt(0)

    var len;
    var aryText = new Array()
    var hyp = "";

    if (document.forms.last.value.indexOf ('-') != -1) {
    len = document.forms.last.value.indexOf('-')
    for (var i = 0; i < len) i++; {
    aryText[i] = document.forms.last.value.charAt[i];
    hyp = hyp + aryText[i];
    }
    document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + hyp.toLowerCase();
    }

    else if (document.forms.last.value.indexOf (' ') != -1) {
    len = document.forms.last.value.indexOf(' ')
    for (var i = 0; i < len) i++; {
    aryText[i] = document.forms.last.value.charAt[i];
    hyp = hyp + aryText[i];
    }
    document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + hyp.toLowerCase();
    }

    else{
    document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + document.forms.last.value.toLowerCase();
    }
    document.forms.code.value = fa.toLowerCase() + la.toLowerCase() + document.forms.ssn.value;
    return true;
    }
    //

    The words after form relate to the fields in the form.

    And then in the body, under the start of the form class we have (obviously these would have the start and end tags (<>):

    form class="forms" name="forms" action="apply.asp" method="post"

    input type="hidden" name="code"
    onchange="javascript:this.value=this.value.toLowerCase();" /
    input type="hidden" name="username"
    onchange="javascript:this.value=this.value.toLowerCase();" /

    On our confirmation page/asp page we have:

    //

Name Username* E-mail Address* Code

<% Response.Write(first)
Response.Write(" ")
Response.Write(last) %>
<% Response.Write(username) %> <% Response.Write(username) %>@oursite.org <% Response.Write(code) %>
//

It currently returns the first and last name in Netscape and Firefox, but nothing else. Again, it is working in Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera.

Can someone see something that we're missing that is unique only for Firefox and Netscape?

Any help is truly appreciated! You guys are great! Thanks in advance!!
