CMS for an Online Magazine
Date: 08/14/06
Keywords: cms, html
Anyone have recommendations for a CMS that'd be suitable for an online magazine? I need something that's easily skinnable (got everything done in static html, just need to translate that into a dynamic site); has a mailform, search engine, and content syndication; and has a content approval workflow and (ideally) some way of auditing who is making what changes.
Currently looking into Drupal, Mambo, TYPO3, and Xoops. Anyone have any experiences with these or any other CMS's?

question again!
Date: 08/14/06
Keywords: mysql, database, sql, web, google
ok i've picked a new web host. i googled this but couldn't make it give me an answer. i would like to transfer emails that are stored on my current host's server to the new host and make them viewable thru the new host's webmail. is this kind of thing possible? would it depend on the web host and the email program they use?
also i would like to transfer my message board as well. would it be as simple as downloading the mysql database and uploading it to the new server?
thanks again for all your help!

cheaaaaaaaap webhosting
Date: 08/14/06
Keywords: web, hosting
i am looking for relatively inexpensive hosting (less than or equal to $5 a month) for http://1919hemphill.org. right now we are using a free webhost that provides to us because we are a DIY music venue and a not for profit group. but they have been having a lot of problems lately and we need alternatives. i was wondering if anyone knew of anyone that gives discounts or something to stuff related to punk rock, and if not, just good reliable webhosts. right now we have 50mb of space and 500mb of bandwidth. not great but it's free. i've been looking around and i just don't know of reliability of stuff. there are a few that are definitely reliable but not within our price range.
anyway i know this question gets asked all the time. maybe we should put it on the memories or something.

Hello Ken
Date: 08/12/06
Keywords: web
This is more on the design side, rather than the technical side, but I'm finally getting around to doing some actual web designing for my personal site, HelloKen.net. I'm not sure whether to be satisfied with what I have or not so I'm going to sleep on it. A friend and I have been looking at it for the past hour and we both agree that something is intrinsically wrong with it, but can't figure it out. Any thoughts?

Link text-wrapping in firefox
Date: 08/10/06
Keywords: html
Recently, I've been tasked to create an e-mail newsletter with HTML formatting, the results of which can be seen at this location.
Everything looks fine-and-dandy in IE, however in firefox, because of a flaw where long links with no spaces take control of table spacing (scroll to the bottom to see the obnoxiously long link). IE allows no-space-links to wrap to the second line, wheras firefox doesn't.
All talks with the boss man lead to us needing the address in there (what if visually handicapped people need to type in the address?). While it's a valid point, it is affecting a good amount of our user base to keep that option open.
What would you guys suggest be done to alleviate this short of shortening the filename? (that's a last resort measure for us).
Thanks!

Colorzilla?
Date: 08/10/06
Keywords: no keywords
So, ColorZilla seems like a really great extension for Firefox.
But is there any way to turn off that obnoxious crosshair? I noticed that it changes my mouse cursor in Firefox from the regular arrow, regardless of if I'm actively using ColorZilla to pick up hex values.
If not, does anyone know of another extension for FF to pick up hex color values?
Thanks in advance.

Form question
Date: 08/09/06
Keywords: google
I have a fairly straightforward form with text input box entries for name, address, city, state, etc. When an automated form filler is used, such as Google Tool Bar Auto-Fill Option, the phone number is inserted into the name field. Phone number doesn't even show up at all in the form.
The names of the input text boxes are correct and logical. "name" for name, "address" for address, etc. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Please! More help with divs and classes...
Date: 08/07/06
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, ignore this. I figured out the problem was. I had a certain attribute confused with another that is too embarrassing for me to explain, but moving on, I still have no idea what's causing that freaky little toolbar to pop up in IE...
Sorry for the nearly repeat post (I just posted this yesterday, but (almost) no one bothered with it because I was asking about the futil IE for Mac...
Well, I just got a chance this morning to test the site on IE 6 for PC... and the problem is happening here too. Well, almost the same problem. The content within a div class ("contentbox") linked to my style sheet is being positioned outside of the div that it's contained in. In IE for Mac, it was showing below the box. In IE for PC, it's showing to the right.
This only happens when I link to the class in my style sheet. It's fine if I apply the exact same attributes to a style tag in the div.
See, on this page it happens, where I've used: "". However, when I put the same exact attributes in a div tag as a style, it's fine. Like this page: where I've used: " ". The attributes for the style and for the class are exactly the same... shouldn't they behave the same? What am I missing here? Also, when I looked at it in IE for PC, I'm getting this really weird glitch where when I hover over the main body area (the area in white) this little IE toolbar-like thing (with little Print,Email, Save, etc buttons) pops up and the disapears again when I move the mouse. I have no idea what's causing this! Help!

Web Developers: How easy is it to set up Drupal for a site?
Date: 08/05/06
Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, sql, web, hosting, shopping
Sooo, I am 98% sure I'm taking on a client where I need to implement a CMS for him to make changes to the site if necessary. When I first wrote the quote a few months ago, I suggested Drupal as the CMS because it was free, looked rather customizable and somewhat easy to use. I have limited experience writing PHP and dealing with MySQL databases but understand the mechanics of it.
This particular client is offering subscriptions to a database of business industry contacts. There will be about 500 contacts on the pay list (including name, office, affiliation, etc) and he will add to the list about every three months or so. What he will change on a regular monthly basis will be the articles he writes. The subscription concept then requires a shopping cart/check out system as well as a password/username management system for each user.
Would Drupal be a good way to go for both my client and for me? Also, I'm switching web hosts and am considering becoming a reseller. Is there a web host that has it installed already? Door Host ( http://www.doorhost.net/ ) used to have it, but I don't think they do anymore. I'm considering going with Total Choice Hosting buying either their basic reseller plan or the regular Deluxe Plan.
Nonetheless, who has used this or other comparable CMSs and which do you prefer and why?
Drupal: http://www.drupal.org/
Sites built with Drupal: http://www.terminus1525.ca http://urlgreyhot.com/personal/ http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ http://www.theonion.com/ http://www.echoditto.com/
Oh, I just found this Drupal web hosting company called Site Ground that has all of the major CMSs installed already and gives you 24,000 MB of space. Anyone heard of them? I also found these guys: Canaca.com.

Help Please!
Date: 08/02/06
Keywords: browser, css
I cannot get CSS psuedo elements to work. Help please!
p{ position:relative; background:transparent; top:-40px; font-family:Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size:14px; text-align:justify; color:#ddb; padding:2% 10% 0% 10%; height:150px; }
p:first-letter{ line-height:30px; font-size:38px; color:#ddc; float:left; padding:2% 3% 0 0; font-family:Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; }
This is my code, but when I view it in a browser, it doesn't work.
::Edit:: Oh geez, I left everyone in the dark here, apologies!
What doesn't work are the first-letter attributes, and they don't work in FF or IE.
Sorry folks, h aha, that should clear things up.

Jakob Nielsen on optimal screen res and page layout for website design
Date: 08/02/06
Keywords: web
Yo homies,
This article may not contain "news" to you, but I thought I'd post it anyway as 411. Jakob Nielsen, for those unfamiliar with him, is an excellent website usability expertwho publishes a regular article on the topic called Alertbox. In his articles and research, he focuses on fairly nuts-and-bolts stuff with respect to page layout, content management and copywriting for the web. I've always found it an interesting read and quite informative. And he always backs up his research with sound data and analysis, too.
The article in question is linked here, with the following synopsis: Optimize Web pages for 1024x768, but use a liquid layout that stretches well for any resolution, from 800x600 to 1280x1024.
In a mainly unrelated vein, I've always thought this guy was very homely yet seemingly, curiously proud of it. He's the one on the left in my icon there, posing with co-author Hoa Loranger, and his bio page links to a hilarious set of high-res photos for download, where a note from probably circa 1998 reads, "Warning: most of the large photos are several hundred kilobytes to download." So cute... By the way, if anyone can hip me to how he developed that über-sophisticated website design he employs for his home page, I'd love to know...
(Okay, now I'm just being catty... His appearance really has nothing to do with how well he writes about and studies web usability. It's just that that photo page really cracks me up...)

Image problems
Date: 07/30/06
Keywords: html, web
I'm a hopeless novice using Dreamweaver MX to update a friend's site, Chrome Peeler Records, and if you click on the "order" link on the home page, my table diplays exactly the way I wanted it to except where are the images?
I'm using Fetch to upload, I'm on dial-up (I know! It sucks but I'm in the sticks.), the images were all saved in Photoshop's "Save for Web" setting and the largest one is 120 px wide (they're all small--just need to show thumbs), the "images" folder is in the site's folder on my HD along with the HTML files.
I only vaguely recall the "Managing Sites" portion of a condensed course I took back in November 2005 and the instructor's insistence on this being a very important factor. Yikes.
Help a newbie out!
P.S. I also checked the page in Safari and no images loaded.

Mailing List Recs?
Date: 07/30/06
Keywords: php, html
Does anyone know of any good, free PHP mailing list scripts other than PhpList? The more customizable, the better.
I've tried PhpList several times now, and every time I've installed it I encountered different problems with it, but I haven't really found anything to use instead.
Features I'd like: multiple form options other than e-mail/name, customizable subscribe, thank you, and unsubscribe pages, ability to send HTML messages, automatic confirmation e-mails. . . that's about it.
Suggestions? Help?

java open browser window
Date: 07/28/06
Keywords: browser
I have a question for you folks regarding pop-ups.
What exactly is the difference between an automatic pop-up ad and an 'open browser window' in a link (simliar to this when you click the thumbnails)?
I mean other than the fact that the automatic ones are the evil and all...
Does blocking pop-ups through any browser options or even a pop-up killing program make links such as those thumbnails unable to open? I know I used to just assume there would be similar problems and also spoke to somebody today of the same belief.
