It has the Pantone, CMYK, RGB, & Hex colours all right next to one another. Thought others may find it useful, I sure do. Below is an example of it:

Calculating fee for a job
Date: 08/24/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hello everyone. A while back there was a request for information on how much to charge for a job. One of the replies gave a link to a site with tips on how to come up with a good amount to charge hourly, and also had an hourly rate calculator (it was an Excel spreadsheet). If anyone still has this link I'd be appreciative if you could post it (and possible make this entry a favourite to save time for anyone else who would need such a thing!).

static/floating menus sliding
Date: 08/23/06

is it possible to make a static/floating (I see them called both online) menu that doesn't look like it's sliding along? I just want it to stay in place, not give odd moving effects.

More Help
Date: 08/23/06
Keywords: no keywords
Alright, after working for a few more days on my site I revised the layout a whole lot but there are still a few problems that I can't seem to figure out:
1.) In FF the alignment for the pages is off. Ex. on the Main page the July 07th update is not lined up with the July 11th update.
2.) In the New Releases section the copyright infomration isn't centering.
3.) In the Media section the TV/Radio information is lined up but the Publication information not.
I'm mostly having alignment issues throughout the entire site. In the different sections some text will be lined up alright and then as you scroll down other text on the same page will be akwardly lined up.

If anyone could help me with the problem I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

javascript help?
Date: 08/22/06
Keywords: css, java
hi everyone,
does anyone here know javascript kind of well? i have a question that i can't seem to solve.
i'm using a function ieHover.js to make my css menu dropdowns work in IE. the file i have works if i only have one dropdown menu on the page but i need two. this is kind of a a syntax question, here is the file:
---
---
basically i need it to perform the function on menu ids "nav" (found in line 3) and another called "mainnav"
how do i rewrite the javascript to take in two values, therefore performing the function on two different list ids?
i hope this made sense. comment with any questions please!
also, if i can't find the answer here, do you have any javascript forums to recommend asking? (i will also post to the javascript lj community)
thanks!
ps. i've tried creating two separate js files to call, but that doesn't work because then the second file cancels out the first if that makes sense.
edit: i posted my question over at dev shed forums and received a working answer pretty quickly. here is the solution if you are curious:

Anyone tried "On The Job" time billing/tracking software? If not, what do you use?
Date: 08/22/06
Keywords: software, web
I was thinking of using On The Job as my time billing/tracking application. It's here: http://www.stuntsoftware.com/OnTheJob/
If you do not use this particular application, what do you use? I'm wondering because I'm still looking for a good one that's vaguely simple to use and tallys well. At one point I was testing iBiz and ProjectTimer but put them to rest for a while. Right now my solution is to manually track my time and invoice clients using the web app SideJobTrack: http://www.sidejobtrack.com. It's free and good.
On The Job seems like a balance between manual and the full blown invoicing/tracking of iBiz. Others have suggested using iRatchet. I'm trying to figure if I need the complexity right now.
I should add that almost all of my projects are billed as flat project fees. SideJobTrack allows a user to bill flat project fees as percentages (ex: 40%/30%/30%). I'm actualy now wondering how a time tracking/billing app would help me...at least it can also tally credits and expenses. But so can SideJobTrack. Maybe the app will let me notice how much time/money I'm burning on a particular section of project before moving to another part. It would put real numbers to your time or dawdling.
Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

Prettier Accessible Forms
Date: 08/22/06
Keywords: html, web
I just found this article over at A List Apart (a design/web usability blog) about making better looking accessible forms. I thought others may find it interesting. An example of what they're talking about is below:
http://alistapart.com/articles/prettyaccessibleforms
"It can be time consuming to make web forms both pretty and accessible. In particular, laying out forms where the form label and input are horizontally adjacent, as in the image below, can be a real problem. We used to use tables, which worked well in this scenario—but forms don’t constitute tabular data, so it’s a semantic faux pas.
I’ve tried to create a form-styling solution that is both accessible and portable (in the sense that I can move the code from one project to the next). Floats have often provided a solution to my problem, but given the complexity of some layouts and the numerous float bugs associated with Internet Explorer, it’s not always easy to reuse a float solution. I wanted to create something that anyone could easily reuse on any project: a style sheet that, when applied to a correctly marked up HTML form, would produce the basis of the required layout. So here it is—my attempt at portable, accessible forms."
They give you the full code on the web page. I hope this helps others.

Is Dreamhost still having email/server issues & brown outs?
Date: 08/21/06
Keywords: cms, software
I'm asking because I deliberated for a while and finally signed up with www.bluehost.com last Sunday but I checked out Dreamhost's One-Click installs and they seem to be better maintained than Bluehost's. Apparently this is because BlueHost uses the Fantastico install setup which is notorious for being one or two versions behind.
I'm particularly interested Dreamhost's Joomla & ActiveCollab (www.activecollab.com) installs. ActiveCollab would be like a free/open-Source version of 37Signals' Basecamp (www.basecamphq.com) project management and billing software. That alone would save me tonnes of time and money. I need the Joomla or Drupal stuff for a CMS I need to set up for a new client.
Has anyone here used their One-Click installs and how good are they? What keeps you at DreamHost and are the outages really that bad? I think I may switch this weeked and have my money refunded by BlueHost but would like the extra assurance from actual users.
Thanks.

Any know how they do this?
Date: 08/20/06
Keywords: no keywords
Trying to figure this one out:
On http://www.bodyglove.com/ the background is a mine 1600x1200 image, with blank space in the middle for the table where the actual content goes. When you resize the screen the table is always centered on the background iamge, so you get the beveled edges just outside the table. Can anyone explain how they do that. I really like the effect.

Keywords: database, web
I work at a little gift shop in Morro Bay, CA and I am trying to do my boss a favor and re-do her website to help her save money and to make it look much more professional. However, I do not have any knowledge or experience in creating databases or online ordering forms. Or really, even what I need to create an extensive online store for her shop. This is the link of the current online store and mine will be similar only much more extensive. If anyone could give me any pointers on how I can go about recreating this, let me know!
HEATHER
P.S. The temporary site that I am making is located here. Feel free to leave me constructive criticism.

php hosting
Date: 08/18/06
Keywords: cms, php, web
Hi all. This has probably been asked 1000 times, but can I pick your collective brains for a moment?
I've been asked to set up a website for a charity. They want a CMS setup, so I need a PHP host. Trouble is, they don't have money.. so I need one that is as cheap as possible. They can probably get funding from some agency to upgrade it in the future, but they said they need the site yesterday, so they don't have time to sort that out. The servers I usually use are out of their budget, so.... any suggestions for good PHP hosts, cheap and reliable?

Running out of ideas
Date: 08/17/06
Keywords: templates, browser, css, microsoft
I am very new to CSS and standards based design; but, I really want to learn. Needing results quickly, I opened StyleMaster and used one of their templates. I didn't change anything really, just reworked the graphics. Proofed it in all the browsers in the house and was so proud of myself for having actually accomplished the task. THEN - I asked friends far and wide to look at the site. It does NOT display correctly in IE6. All the content is displayed below the navigation column. Using Dreamweaver I tried to find some clue; but none of the clues led to anything that worked to make it display correctly in IE6. Works great in IE7 but Microsoft isn't forcing the upgrade so I guess it is a BIG problem for me. Bad news is the client uses IE6. Can somebody look at this and give me a clue to fixing it - I'm willing to try anything at this point. Really hate to go back to tables now when I'm so darn close. THANK YOU!!

Layout Help
Date: 08/16/06
Keywords: html
I'm working on a new layout for my site and I've run into a little problem. The layout I'm designing looks awesome in IE but for some reason in FF the left side with the album releases and 'Shikao-Ring' button is really low on the page and overflows the box. I've been looking at the code for an hour now and cannot seem to figure out what the problem is. Here's the test page.
