1. data managment?

Date: 07/26/06     Keywords: php, software, web, shopping

can anyone recommend a good php script or program that would be good for the following?:

i want to create a website that has a section for me to post recipes. the index page for the recipe sections, i want to be thumbnail's of a photo of each recipe (instead of just a text link - see FIGURE A). when you click the thumbnail, i want it to go to a page where i can put text and photos for the actual recipe page. i want to be able to categorize the recipes on the index page, so when i enter them, they appear in the correct section on the index page.. and only thumbnails for the most recent 4 or 5 recipes show on the index page. if you click on the "view more" button, or the category title, it takes you to another index type page with thumbnails of all of the recipes in that category (see FIGURE B).

    FIGURE B:

i've worked a bit with customizing php (shopping carts), and i was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction to a good script or data entry program that might be able to help me to achieve this. i want to do it in php so i can easily update recipes, etc. i might eventually incorperate the same software/script to display crafts and projects.

  2. Widget Question

Date: 07/26/06     Keywords: html, java, web

I was browsing An Inconvenient Truth website and found this neat "widget" - that's what they called it anyway - that could track how many sign-ups your own website has triggered.

Now I have no idea what a widget is except for those that are on the Mac so could someone help explain how it works? I know rudimentary Flash but I'm not sure if it is enough for this...

I signed up and they emailed me back the code below to be pasted in between the HTML code.

Is there any similar (simpler) script to help track "sign-ups" and then display the result automatically? Like the above? I would really appreciate any help or links pointing me to the right direction.

    Thanks!

  3. Web Hosting Reseller

    Date: 07/26/06     Keywords: web, hosting

Recently, the small web host my company had been using for the past 3 years had a server crash and have never recovered (all my accounts are still down, 1 month later) and those files I was hosting are pretty much all lost with very little hope of ever getting them back, in addition to all the accounts we had setup for our clients.

Well here we are, a month later with all our client's files and ours over at Dreamhost. Which is a fantastic host.

However, we would like to find someone where we can get a reseller account through. We are mainly looking for the ability to set up quotas for bandwidth and space.
WIth our old host each client had cpanel access as well so they could do light admin work on their own accounts.

Anyone have any hosts that are like this?

For the record, we were with webspacedepot.net

    Thanks!

  4. Proofreading?

    Date: 07/24/06     Keywords: asp

Do any of you proofread, correct or otherwise reorganize client-given copy?

If the copy has organizational/grammatic issues, I usually like to reword or reorganize it with the client's permission. The main person I do this for knows that the copy has issues and she encourages me to fix it (and as it is a part of the process of site development, I get compensated for my time).

I used to think that it was just my job as a designer to design the site, and slap any content they gave me into it verbatim, but now I'm far more conscious of that looking badly not only for the client but for me as well.

If you're confident enough in your grasp of language to fix other people's writing, what do you do? Fix it, or leave it as is? Why, or why not? Do you feel any responsibility towards clarity of content?

  5. Suggestions for search engines?

    Date: 07/24/06     Keywords: web

My company has been using a really awful, cheap search engine called Atomz, but our contract is about to expire and I'd like to find another search engine, mostly for finding articles on our website.

What are some suggestions and price quotes for search engines that need to sift through about 1,000 articles? Right now, you enter an exact title of an article and the search engine won't even pull it up...

    Thanks!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why I'm having this problem? Like I said, the old site loaded fine and I just applied the new template to all the old pages. The content is fine but the actual elements of the site are totally booched.

  8. Film Noire in Web Design

Date: 07/18/06     Keywords: php, css, html, web

I am looking for some help and inspiration.

I have a client who wants a "film noire" web site. I know what film noire is and the basic style of it but am having a hard time capturing that for the web.

Are there any sites done in a film noire style I could peek at to get a sense of the overall look and feel? Anyone ever done something like this before and have some pointers?

I am looking to build in xhtml, css and php. No flash other than perhaps SIFR or a related method for headings.

Any help would be much appreciated. :-)

    Thanks in advance!

полночи проковырялся с кодом, пытаясь поставить эту менюшку посередине страницы и фона, на котором она лежит.
может, это - недосып и я морожу, но подскажите, пожалуйста, что тут можно сделать.

    Date: 07/17/06     Keywords: browser

    Hi.
Ok, here I'm asking for opinions and for maybe some help.

    http://piuzone.com/mysite2/index2.htm

I took everyones advice and completely ditched flash. I changed up the colors (hopefully to everyones liking), and well, here's the problem i'm having.

I have the frame border set to 0, and every other 'border' attribute set to 0, yet in Firefox & Camino (only checked on the mac versions), it still shows a border, and it makes it look stupid.

    Safari Browser:
    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
    [what it SHOULD look like]

    Camino/Firefox Browser:
    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
    [what is SHOULDNT look like]

    Thanks for your input.

And no, the buttons do not work (I have nothing set up), I just want to make sure my design is OK, and see if I can work with this frame issue before I start going in depth with it. The main page writing is just copied news story so there's text there.

  11. IE not displaying a table correctly

    Date: 07/17/06     Keywords: browser

    I'm working on this site:

    http://feelgoodcars.com/site/

And I'm using tables to display the links across the top. I thought this would be a bullet-proof way to get the site to display properly in all browsers. But for some reason, IE will mis-align the links at the top - they're images and I've checked that they are sliced correctly. They should all be the same size but IE isn't lining them up properly??

Can someone help me figure out what's wrong? I'm going nuts here.

    TIA.

    (x-posted)

Edit: should mention that this is IE on the PC that's not working properly... looks fine in Mac IE.

  13. Auto-Write script for splash page

    Date: 07/15/06     Keywords: browser, java

I want to add a splash page to my site that displays a users IP address, browser, resolution & color depth, and potentially their name address (like ppp-69-223-177-96.dsl.wotnoh.ameritech.net)

I know I need to figure out how to detect these variables and accordingly display them in the browser. However I don't want it to just display on screen, I'd like it to scroll up, to appear similar to the scene in the Matrix early on when Neo is asleep on his PC. A similar page can be found here but the information displayed is static.

At one point I remember seeing a javascript that would do everything I want, from automatically pulling user info and displaying it and auto-writing it.

Any suggestions or places to look would be appreciated.

  15. css for emails?

Date: 07/12/06     Keywords: css, html, web, yahoo

So the new project at work are emailed newsletters, and I basically want them to use the same layout for the website in these emails (so they know it's from us + I don't have to think up a whole new design).

Only issue is that the website uses a fair chunk of css. Since linking to an outside css file is out of the question (mainly because who knows if they read it online or not), I'll have to have all that stuff within the html itself. Only thing I want to make sure is that it's pretty standard for email systems (outlook, mail for osx, gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc) to be able to process that kind of stuff.

    so... this'll be okay, right?

  17. GoLive help

    Date: 07/12/06     Keywords: java, web

I'm trying to add a javascript function to an existing webpage in GoLive. It's supposed to work with a form that has already been set up. GoLive keeps deleting the code I insert every time I save. It doesn't matter if I try to add directly to the code or in the javascript editor. Any idea on how to prevent it from doing that? Thanks!

  18. Random HTML and Image Script

    Date: 07/11/06     Keywords: php, html

Does anyone know of a good script that randomly selects a block of HTML (including text and images) from a directory and can be output to another page (i.e., included via PHP and placed in a div on an index page)?

I've already tried a couple from ALA (Random Image Rotation and A Better Image Rotator), but I'm still looking for something a little better.

    Thanks in advance.

  19. and on another note . . .

Date: 07/07/06     Keywords: ecommerce, css, web, shopping

    another question for you all.

i am about to begin a website refresh project. basically, they want: a flash video, more streamlined nav, a conversion of a hard copy book into a pdf, add a tickertape for news, clean up styling inconsistencies, and maybe add a shopping cart if they can afford it.

my main question is this: i just looked at the source and realized it's all tables. is it even worth suggesting a total coding overhaul to CSS? it wouldn't add much to the user experience (aside from accessability) but it sure would make updating easier. the biggest problem is that i'd have to charge them at least 2 grand more than their budget to do this. should i bother?

next question: does 8 grand sound like a reasonable estimate for the work (not including the shopping cart)? i way overestimated my hours to get that number, but i ALWAYS underestimate. plus, if they went through a firm and not a freelancer, they'd get charged at least 3 times that.

next: how much do you charge to add a shopping cart? originally i was going to say 4 grand, but that puts it way out of their budget. so i brought it down to 2 grand. the thing is that i'm not exactly an ecommerce expert so i know it'll be a lot of work.

any replies would be awesome, i have to send this proposal out today. thanks!

  20. oh hell

    Date: 07/07/06     Keywords: technology, shopping

hi everyone. i need to ask about shopping cart technology/e-commerce solutions. im sure it's been discussed before but there is so much information to digest.

all i want are some recommendations. cheaper is better. the layout of the store should be as flexible as possible (none of this template crap).

i have used volusion before, and i was not very happy with them at all. horrible tech support and lies about flexibility.

    thank you.
