1. CMS on the Windows platform?

    Date: 07/07/06     Keywords: cms

If you run CMS on a Windows platform, which do you use and why? Pros and cons?

I've tried one for a client last year that caused a lot of headaches when it came to using my site design and their editing the site with the CMS. Their pictures and text would appear at the top of the page, overlaying the graphics I put in place.

Thanks for the input in advance!

For anyone that uses stock photography, photos.com is having a half-price sale on their yearly membership - it's $300 instead of $600.00

I figured since I just had the "ooh!" reaction & emailed my boss to get in on that, some of you guys might like to take advantage of it too...

  3. Links & rollovers inactive

    Date: 07/06/06     Keywords: css

Im trying to learn from my betters by modifying someone else's design. the problem I'm having is that when I try to check it out on my server or home machine, the links and rollovers don't work. I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing, but I can't see what the problem is. Help? The page is on my server here and the CSS file is here.

For the record, I have only been working on the front page and the related CSS file. None of the links point to anything real right now.

  4. Positioning div at bottom of another div

    Date: 07/06/06     Keywords: browser

I'm working on this site for a friend: http://www.11oh1.net/kamel

She wants the image of the restaurant and the contact info to always be positioned at the bottom of the content area. I can do this by fooling with the top margin but that doesn't work so well as the browser is resized.

What would be the best way to go about this?

  6. trying to figure out what's next....

    Date: 07/05/06     Keywords: no keywords

i've been offered the opportunity to interview for an agency art director position and i need to think about it for a bit. i've been working freelance for 1.5 years. previously, i've worked in an agency setting and in a corporate marketing department setting. so i guess i'm looking for a few good reasons as to why i should be working full time again (besides the stability and regular paycheques).

also, if you could help give me the pros and cons as to working freelance vs working for an agency, that would be useful too.

  10. Photoshop and text

    Date: 07/01/06     Keywords: browser, web

Obviously, Photoshop is terrible when it comes to text handling. This is especially true when it comes to creating client comps for web. The text on the comp, if it is generated in PS, is far inferior to what it will look like in the browser.

I have a clumsy method or two for generating comps with text that looks a more or less like the finished product. But I have known for a long time that I needed to find a more efficient way to deal with this issue.

So, my question is, how do you deal with it? Do you set the text in illustrator or just make browser comps? Perhaps I should just do my comps in code but I am looking for the fastest possible solution.

Thanks in advance for those who answer my question.

  13. AHHHHHHHH! SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!

    Date: 06/29/06     Keywords: web, hosting

ok i have a good one for y'all.

a few years ago i registered a domain name thru this company based in houston. we used to have hosting with them as well but it couldn't meet our needs so we switched hosting, but didn't worry about switching the domain name.

now my boss or whatever you call him (guy i made the website for) wants to change the name servers. that webhosting company doesn't exist anymore. i called the contact listed in the domain name and the guy tells me that the company has since split and the guy who has all the info for the domain names and stuff is gone and they can't get a hold of him or whatever. he's out of the country or something and they don't ever talk or something.

is there any other way i can change the name servers? i was going to try to register with a different company but the domain is locked and my boss (or whatever) had the foresight to register the domain name for 5 years, so it doesn't expire until 2008.

any help would be greatly appreciated! bah!!!!!!!

  14. Weirdness

    Date: 06/27/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hello,
I am having a problem with some tables. I believe that a table is a block level element and therefore anything following it should be underneath it. Unless its another table! There is something fundamental that I missing and I hope you can tell me what it is.

I would think that the table with the class of list would be under the table with a class of jumplist. They are both inside of a containing td tag. So why is the jumplist to the left of the list? The tops are even with each other.

    Here is the code:

  15. Pull-down list for navigation... help?

    Date: 06/26/06     Keywords: css, java

Here's a basic rundown of what I need to do:

I need to have something to the effect of a pull-down list that navigates people to their proper sale's rep's page regionally, so there's a pull-down menu that lists all of the states, the user then selects their state and presses a "go" (or whatever) button, and is then directed to the proper page.

I've never needed this type of pull down menu before, and I assumed that the select tag would be what I would use, but now that I'm looking into it, it seems that this would only work in conjunction with javascript, and a lot of coders find this method to be less than ideal.

I've read about drop down menus a la A List Apart's suckerfish menu, which seems to be the ideal way for standards-wise and accessibility-wise, but the CSS type menu just doesn't seem appropriate for this particular use (especially because of the pre-existing horrible mess this site is already in, design-wise and code-wise). This sounds awful, but to keep this site consistently bad, I'd just like to put a standard pull-down with navigation (a tidy little CSS drop down would look out of place).

What are your thoughts on this method? Am I overthinking it?

Boy, I can't wait until I get the go ahead to start this site over from scratch!

  16. php bb menu

    Date: 06/25/06     Keywords: php, web

What is the easiest way to add the regular navigation menu of a website, to the top of a phpbb forum page?

And is it possible to have a different default skin show up based on the different ways you enter the forum? Like when you have two different domain names pointed at the same forum, so you have abc.net/forum and xyz.net/forum.

  17. Website Skins

    Date: 06/25/06     Keywords: php, web

Is there an easy way to have two different skins on your website, based on how you enter the website.

    For example:
If you were to enter this website as http://vampiretherequiem.net it would show the red/white/grey background.

and if you enter the website as http://werewolftheforsaken.net it would show the orange/brown/white background.

Note: It shows the right page when you first enter the werewolf section, but then once you click on the main menu it goes back to the red background of course. I want to be able to see all the same pages, in the orange background without having to completely remake the the enter website, and I was wondering if there was a php way, similar to phpbb forum skins, to do that.

  18. Banner links

    Date: 06/25/06     Keywords: html

A friend of mine wants to add some banners on her site that people can take and put on their own site for linking purposes. She likes the idea of offering the complete HTML so that it's a simple case of copy & paste the HTML.

What's the easiest way of offering this up? I know the solution is painfully easy and obvious and is staring me in the face but i can't see it... :/

  19. Layout help please.

Date: 06/23/06     Keywords: css, html, web

    Hi all!

Im an ameteur web designer who really designs for my own hobbies.

I am teaching myself Dreamweaver and have had some experience building basic html pages in FrontPage and Notepad.

I have a website that I want to update. The current format uses anchoring to move people from chapter to chapter within the one page. I have been told that perhaps CSS is a better layout way for me to show my webpage stories.

Ideally I would like a navigation side bar on the left. Ideally I would like the header etc at the top. I deally I would want a footer which holds the copyright etc. THe section on the right would contain each chapter. Chapter 2 would replace chapter 1 once chapter 2 was selected on the nav bar etc. etc.

My original post was in my own LJ and can be found HERE

I welcome any critisisms on how I could "better" my layout and any advice on how things could be done.

    Thanks.

  20. Client-friendly websites

    Date: 06/23/06     Keywords: web

Today I went to a volunteer organization's monthly meeting for their new website to be presented. I did the design (but not the coding), as well as the logo/identity.

After the meeting was adjourned, a few people came up to me asking for some design services. My only concern with one woman was that she said her organization already has a website, but nobody is trained in maintaining it and they have no way of adding content.

Obviously not every business or volunteer organization can afford to have a web designer in-house. This woman was a volunteer for a non-profit, so I doubt I could even charge them for *me* to upload content for them.

So, what's the easiest way for laypeople to upload content to their website? Give them an FTP client and some carefully worded instructions?
