1. help with redesign?

Date: 10/04/05     Keywords: css, html, web

Hi all. I have this ugly website. It's here: http://liquid.rdpdesign.com

I'm redesigning it, trying to work on all the little details so it's not so ugly. The site runs on Wordpress which explains the large CSS file and such.

Here's what I have up so far: http://temp.rdpdesign.com/liquid/redesign.html

I need advice. What's better? What's worse? What else needs work?

The image at the bottom is a mock up of what I would like... a repeated image of something like the surface of the ocean. Or something water related like that.

The layout works great in FF and Opera, ideally it won't be changed... it still has some bugs in IE that I'm working on.

My dream would be to see this site make it into some kind of css gallery... even considering the restraints I have.

  2. Help!

    Date: 10/04/05     Keywords: web, yahoo

    x-posted to '[info]'graphicdesign, '[info]'web_design, and '[info]'webdesign

I'm sorry if this isn't allowed here. I read the rules in the community info and didn't think that this would violate any of the rules, but if it does, I'll remove it.

    My problem:
I've been getting pretty good at making headers for LiveJournal layouts as well as for websites (header/background package), but I know next to nothing about coding. I was hoping that someone who was good at coding these things could pair up with me and make layouts for people. It would also be great if that person would be willing to help me out with my web/LJ layouts when I have a problem or want to change anything.

Maybe we could start a layout community or just use my graphics site (which is getting redone soon), '[info]'devious_art. I would of course require credit for both of us if we went with the latter.

If you're interested, you can comment here, email me at deviant_queen@yahoo.com or IM me at galelvr66 (AIM), deviant_queen (YIM), or deviant_queen@hotmail.com (MSN) so we can work out the details.

    Thank you,
    Lyndz

  3. The old 100% DIV height problem

    Date: 10/03/05     Keywords: html

So, I've got 3 DIVs. DIV1 is the one that is the longest, as in goes the furthest down the page. I want DIV2 and DIV3 to stretch out to the proportion of DIV1. But I can't do this with absolute values, because the amount of content in DIV1 changes.

Everyone says the solution to this is:
    * html, body {height:100%}

But that doesn't work for me. DIV2 and DIV3 remain the size of the window and will not stretch past that.

I understand this has some sort of correlation with the Box Model hack etc., but I'm just quite confused right now. Help?

  5. Flash developer

    Date: 09/30/05     Keywords: web, yahoo

Is there an experienced Flash developer who knows their shit when it comes to Action Script in this community? I need to prepare a quote and proposal for a potential client for a Flash-based web site. The Flash piece will include an object that will need to be able to be rotated around, flipped over, etc., by the user. It will incorporate some other interactivity that I can describe if you hit me up at longrangeswish@yahoo.com.

Also, if anyone knows of a good Flash community on LJ and you could clue me in that would be great. I wasn't able to find one. I can move this post over there if necessary.

    Thanks.

  6. this sucks

    Date: 09/29/05     Keywords: css, web

Well this sucks. A website I was making for a client just got cancelled. It was for a band, and their manager told them to hold off on the new site due to "image" reasons. As in, their image will be changing soon, and thus their site must then be all re-done to reflect this new image. I really liked how the new site was looking too :(

Flint Face (only the homepage and the 'about' page is done.)

Anyway, I wanted to post what I had so far for a reason. I've been trying to spend my free time learning more about CSS. I'm starting getting the hang of it. I didn't use any CSS layout stuff in this site though, because I haven't learned enough yet. As you will see, its all tables and IFRAMES and spacer gifs. This is all I know.

My big request is for help making a site similar to this one, with no tables or frames. I haven't found anything online yet regarding how to make image-heavy layouts (like I used for the flint face site) without tables. Also, I would love to learn how to make a simple top navigation which loads in content underneath, but without re-loading the menu (like the flint face site), WITHOUT frames.

Anyway, I always get help here, so I have high hopes.

    Thanks again.

  7. Question

    Date: 09/28/05     Keywords: no keywords

I may be missing something really obvious, but... I have a really long page with lots of links. I want people to be able to click on a link and then be able to return to the same spot on the original page when they use the back button. Right now the back button always returns me to the top of the page. How do I do this?

  8. Question for those wiser than me...

    Date: 09/27/05     Keywords: web, hosting

when you design a website for a new client and they do not yet have a domain name, how do you go about registering that client?

    - do you have them give you their credit card number?
    - do you register YOUR e-mail with the hosting service you choose or your client's?
    - do you take it out of their deposit for the work?

    - essentially, do you set things up under their name or yours?

I was going to use Dreamhost... and I want to put myself as a referral... help?

  15. PDF -> HTML

    Date: 09/24/05     Keywords: html, web

I have a client who sent me a bunch of PDF files that they want "live" on their website. Can anyone recommend a good PDF to HTML converter that preserves the layout of the document? That, or I'm open to other suggestions on how to post PDF data on a website without the visitor having to download the actual file.

  16. Frames help?

    Date: 09/23/05     Keywords: web

I just joined this community, looking for some help with, hey, webdesign! My names Katharine and I'm a student at Northeastern University in Boston. So errr hi! Anyway, I just got shouldered with designing a web page for a group I'm in, SWE, and I'm having trouble getting the frames to work properly... I'm trying to edit the buttons on the sidebar (they're old, we don't want all the pages anymore but our moderator likes the design), but when I edit them I can't get the links to open in the center frame. They either open in the side frame or open in a new window. Anybody know how to help me out? Or help me help myself?

    The website is http://www.coe.neu.edu/Groups/swe/
(go figure, a buncha engineers can't seem to make a website)

Thanks in advance for the help!
And if I'm totally in the wrong place, lemme know, ok?

  17. Hi.

    Date: 09/22/05     Keywords: no keywords

Can anyone give opinions on the design on this site? Anyways of improving the side layout? Is the color scheme effective? Opinions appreciated.

Just a little background before you enter the site. The site's focus will be building a community with the interests of american and international music, cultural arts, politics, clothing wear, entertainment, and educational articles. It's basicly an open label for artists who are in pursuit to get thier talents out there. Wether it be music, writing, mixed media arts, and fashion designers. My goal here is to gain knowledge and perspective on what would make this site work. So far we have the forums up, the layout, and the main structure of the concept of the site.

Any advice or comments are greatly welcomed.

To all those who seek to be full-time freelancers:

Sometimes you get NO sleep. I'm starting to lose all perception of reality. 50 hours on a project in the last 3 days. It's starting to eat at me. Ugh. I actually started to command-z an order at a bar last night. Just kidding, but you get my point.

  20. Web Design needed. Bad.

    Date: 09/20/05     Keywords: web

RacketMag.com badly needs a new layout. I have an idea for a layout, but need help making it a reality, as my web design skills consist of an 11th grade "intro to the internet class" I took 7 years ago. If anyone is looking to expand their portfolio, please email me at Music@RacketMag.com or send a message to our MySpace. Thanks so much!
