  2. MyWeb

    Date: 09/20/05     Keywords: asp, web, spam, yahoo

    I work for a great dot-com and everyone here is an expert in some aspect of the Web. As it happens the core techie team is much smaller than the other specialities. As a result it tends to be myself or my team who find new sites or recommend trustworthy technical resources and I'd like to widen that field a bit.

    Yahoo has a system called My Web 2.0 (beta) which I'd love to merge with '[info]'webdesign (this isn't cross-posted). I'm always torn when someone posts a link to a handy new site because when I'm grumpy it looks like spam but when I'm in a better mood the links are almost always useful. I want to get more '[info]'webdesign recommendations but I don't want to encourage people to post links here more often! I think My Web 2.0 is the solution (er, no, I don't work for Yahoo!).

    In short, I'd like to swap My Web 2.0 community invites with people on this group and with my work-based Yahoo alias. I'm Andrew and if you'd like my to invite you to the community you'll need to leave your email as a comment. I suggest either screening the comment so spam-bots can't find it or writing like 'andrew at angrysockpuppet dot com'. I wouldn't mind if people wanted to put their own sites into the system too but perhaps we could tag them "homepages" or "mysite", etc, or even "lj webdesign" as appropriate.

  3. Scattered Questions

    Date: 09/18/05     Keywords: web, google

    I have no experience in web design, but, I'd really like to consider getting into it. Where do I go, and what do I do? Sending myself back to college isn't feasible, right now (although a night course or two might be). Also, how is the market for this occupation? Before anyone tells me to Google/Monster it...I already have. The reason I'm asking here is that the answers I've gotten are reeeeally conflicting. I thought I'd ask here, and get some clearer answers from those who know first-hand.

    Also, are any of you in IT? MIS? Are these occupations really as dead-end and yesterday's-news as I've heard?

    How much calculus must I know to break into any of these areas?

    Anyway, if you've read this, thanks for doing so. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

  4. I hates Internet Explorers to pieces!!! >_

    http://transgeneral.net/electrolysis/Index.php

    My host recently changed a whole bunch of settings and now this page, every page within it, and a lot of other pages don't recognize tables within Internet Explorer or something.. That's the closest thing I can guess! This DID at one point work, though I don't know specifically when it stopped working as I don't use IE.. Personally I think Microsoft should scrap the whole project, it was a failure from the start.. BUY THEM OUT MOZILLA! =/

    Could anyone be so kind as to look at my source and give a suggestion or two?

    Thanks in advance,
    ~Ego

  5. CSS issues...again.

    Date: 09/18/05     Keywords: css, html, web

    I'm having some more difficulties with this client's website: http://www.mylbags.com/client_area/armetta/

    I'm noticing something very troubling in FireFox. The menu buttons appear at the top of the screen partially covered by the top portion. The menu buttons for the portfolio also appear at the top and behind the top portion. Go here to see what I mean: http://www.mylbags.com/client_area/armetta/portfolio/work1.html Both of these sets of menu buttons are laid out in their own table. Is that part of the problem?

    Please help me! Relevant CSS code is cut below.

    Does anyone know of an ASP script that will swap the content block of text out in a page template, pulling the content from a directory of include files? I can do this in PHP, but the site I'm working on requires ASP. TIA.

    OK I know this is going to sound pretty stupid. I just got my new domain and hosting package and now i want to upload some pictures onto my site so that I can link to them for various reasons. So I went in and uploaded all the images that i wanted to use. But whe nI try to put in the url to them it tells me forbidden. What is causing this. I am using the ftp file manager in the control panel for the site. I registered my domain and have my hosting through www.cyberpixels.com any help would be great.

    I just met with someone about doing some freelance webdesign for a new company. He seemed to like my work and the meeting went well, in general.

    Now what? This will be my first freelance job. I have no idea where to even begin with this. We talked about what he had in mind... so now do I put together some possible design solutions and go from there? Would that be "on the clock?"

    Any general freelance advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Date: 09/13/05     Keywords: css

    So I'm using Dreamweaver 8 right now. Its nice. The way it renders CSS is SO much better (though still a TINY bit buggy). I have to say it seems a bit snappier, and more intelligent when I'm hand coding (no more auto closing of tags until you begin to write the close!), and also has a lot of features that are very beneficial for those of us doing CSS layouts.

    Anyone have any thoughts or experiences so far? :)

    attention freelancers!

    help! someone found my website on a link i didn't know i was on, and liked me enough to request a web deisgn for their zine. they wanted a quote but i don't know if i should do an hourly or flat rate. it's an independent zine, and i am not a professional designer, just an artist, BASIC web deisgn by hobby, most likely going to do a clean simple design and simple layout, nothing fancy like flash, etc. just very very simple. any ideas of the price range i should give? and how does consultation usually work? does a designer just design away, or do you show them "sketches" of the layout/navigation to the client? does this factor in as a fee too?

  14. frustrating problem

    Date: 09/13/05     Keywords: css, web

    I'm setting up a website for a client here: www.mylbags.com/client_area/armetta

    I want the white portion of the screen to go from above the menu icons to the very bottom of the page. the only way i could figure to do this giving it a fixed height. I'd rather not do this because then i get a ton of empty scrolling on low resolutions. here's the css definition:

    div.main
      {
      background-color: white;
      text-align: center;
      position: absolute;
      left: 0px;
      top: 324px;
      width: 100%;
      height: 830px;
      z-index:1;
      }

    I tried making height 100%, or inserting a table with height at 100% or even 50% into the actual instance of the div, but neither worked. With these, the white was reduced to just a thin stripe stretching the complete width of the page.

    Help me please!!!!!!

  16. first post

    Date: 09/12/05     Keywords: css, web

    I've been watching for a while now as I have also been reading up trying to learn web design. I'm a print and or animation person, but have been meaning to expand my knowledge for a while now.

    So, I created my first website after teaching myself some CSS. Its a portfolio site for my work. I wanted a clean, fun, simple design and I wanted it all in CSS, no tables. This is just a start, I have plans on making it better and eventually I want a contact form on the site instead of having my address listed right there, but that is something I'm still learning and haven't had time to focus on yet.

    Comments and critiques welcome, I'm still learning and figured some feedback might serve me well.

  17. Remote scrollbar

    Date: 09/11/05     Keywords: css

    I'm looking for the code for a remote scrollbar; I don't actually know the term for it.

    It's like, instead of using the scrollbar on the right I'll turn it off with CSS. The content's in a DIV layer, centered in a box in the center, and instead of using that scrollbar, I'm going to turn that off, too. The sort I want to use is two graphics that scroll the DIV layer up and down. Where can I find this?

    Thanks a lot!

  18. the css battle wages on...

    Date: 09/11/05     Keywords: browser, html, google

    I am officially going out of my mind. This might be a little long, sorry folks. I'm just getting way to frustrated with this. When trial and error & google fail...

    I am trying to get a div to position at the bottom of a page. Sounds simple right?

    No matter what I try it's not doing what I want it to do. Simple example I have the bottom margin set to 0px. That should work.. shouldn't it?

    I've tried bottom: 0 (which gets it to the bottom of the browser window, ok in the simple example.. but the Real Page is longer than that, and makes the image float halfway down the page. (on there it is the copyright image I'm trying to get to the bottom.)

    .copyright {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 2;
    padding: 7px;
    bottom: 0px;
    }

    I've even tried top: 100%, top: auto.. nothing works

    Real Page 2 position: absolute is supposed to make that element work independantly from the other elements on the page. If so why is it plopping down below the rest? ( and no matter where in the html I put it it's working around the other divs)

    .copyright2 {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 2;
    padding: 7px;
    margin-bottom: 0px;
    }

    This is probably going to be one of those simple "Do this, dummy" kinda answers, but that's okay.
