1. dhtml thumbnail scroller vs. show/hide layers

    Date: 07/04/05     Keywords: html

    http://dicksonschneider.com/japan/
    This is what I've been working on today. Thanks for the people with the font suggestions!

    I am thinking for the thumbnails about a nice dhtml (?) or script for a scroller. Anyone know of anything that would work?

    They way I have it set up now is just switching from a layer of four thumbnails to another layer of four.
    For some reason, the script I stuck in there isn't working for show/hiding layers when the thumbnail is clicked. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  2. Quick Question about validating:

    Date: 07/04/05     Keywords: browser, css, html

    I'm still very new to the whole validation thing. I always make sure my sites work in both IE and Firefox, but I'm currently trying expand my horizons and build on the basic knowledge I have of html, css, etc.

    Anyway, point being. I'm building a site that has a flash movie in it. From what I've read in order to make it work in IE you need the < object ... > and in order for flash to show up in firefox or netscape it needs to also have < embed ...> Now that's all fine and dandy, but it seems that html 4.01 transitional spits it back at me saying embed is no good.

    Is there a way around this? Personally I'd rather the flash actually show up in all browsers than having the page validate *L* but it's a little on the irritating side.

    ---

    Edit: On another tangent, I was searching through other flash pages to see if I could find out how they deal with the problem. I went to coolhomepages.com and hit every page in the flash section for the first few pages. Only about 3 of them had a doctype, and out of those none of them validated.

    Do people actually worry about validating their pages?

  3. Your Opinions please

    Date: 07/02/05     Keywords: java, web

    I'm in the process of revamping my entire site to a completely new look -- current one is outdated and old in many ways. However, I ran into a snag...how to display artworks/photographs nicely.

    What are your thoughts design-wise on the best, professional way to present artworks/photographs?

    Right now, what I have is a web page with thumbnails linked to a javascript that opens a new window of a specific size showing the full image when a thumbnail is clicked. I'm tired of it and wonder if I should use something like a sliding bar at the bottom with thumbnails that display the chosen image above it on the same web page?

    Examples of sites you know that displays a gallery of images nicely, are useful.

    Thanks for your opinions.

    And have a nice July 4th weekend. I'm working anyway.

  4. Save me from the IE >_>

    Date: 07/01/05     Keywords: browser, css

    I know floats aren't the cleanest things to use for positioning, but I just find them to be the simplest thing for basic column layouts. The vast majority of the time they behave well, but I've recently noticed that in IE Mac (a.k.a., the browser from hell), this page, this page, and this page both have the problem that the content appears under the nav instead of next to it. All the pages use this stylesheet, but the layout issue only appears on these pages. I don't see how it's the content that's pushing it too wide, especially since all the widths of the divs are defined and making the content wider doesn't help. (and I'm not even going to -try- and get the CSS dropdowns to work correctly in this thing).

    I could use some ideas on how to resolve this one issue, and possible suggestions on how to CSS-position in the future. Thanks much.

    Date: 07/01/05     Keywords: html, web

    hello fellow designers! i would like to hear your opinions on price quoting for website jobs.

    i've never really done freelance on websites before, but am about to do a small size "5-10 pages" site. i haven't had the official briefing with my client yet, so i don't have details upon the quality of work the company is looking for. ie: flash, html, other added on components, etc.

    in your experience, how would you quote a job of this scale?
    by pages? by hours? as a package price? by method (flash or html)? +extra $ on revisions?

    any help would be lovely, thanx in advance! :)

    I'm doing a site for a client that is going to sell body pillows (aka sex mats, lol). He will eventually sell more sex products as well. The models are those that will pose on the pillows eventually so the photo's will be along the same lines, but they will change.

    Has anybody here heard of/used/poked & prodded This?

    Finally! A complete Web Authoring System for Linux Desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver.

    Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.

    I probably will check it out a little more when I have the chance but I must admit that when I was looking at Their demo css page and IE broke it, wasn't a good sign.

    Any thoughts?

    ps. anybody who thinks people with no knowledge or expertise can make & manage a website obviously hasn't seen the crap out there that gets brought to me as a redesign!

    Hey everyone.

    I'm currently re-designing my portfolio site, and have completed the initial draft for the homepage. I would love some feedback if anyone would be so kind.

  10. Couple quick questions.

    I forget these lessons taught to me:

    text color in body tag...can I do this...if so how?
    if not, what would you suggest I do to change the basic text color of an entire document from....say...black to maybe navy or denim?

  12. Section 508 compliance

    Date: 06/28/05     Keywords: css, asp, web

    I need some advice. My company is trying to become Section 508 compliant and I am the leader of such an aggressive move. There are several problems involved with this whole project and my experience with Section 508 compliance is limited (basing a lot of my knowledge on government contracting experience). I know some of the basics, but I need to give more solid proof and evidence that we need to completely revamp the website.

    The biggest (and strongest) argument I have is that our website is completely designed using frames and depends heavily on them. I have already created a CSS driven layout that will mimic the current layout, but we are having issues with the ASP coding for the website. It was very poorly developed and not option explicit, which makes moving to ASP.NET difficult on top of frames.

    My question for you all is if you have resources that I can read more about Section 508 Compliance. If you have tips as well, that would be VERY appreciated.

  13. Line height?

    Date: 06/28/05     Keywords: css

    IE for Mac doesn't seem to recognize CSS "line-height" property. I used: line-height: 5.5px; It works fine in IE for PC.

    Any advice? I have a book that specifies using "em" as opposed to "px", but that doesn't work in IE for PC's.

  14. Divs

    Date: 06/27/05     Keywords: web

    Hi,

    I'm trying to create a web page with two div columns that are equal width, 50% of the page. Below these I want a 3rd div that is 100% of the page width so the layout will look something like this with the full stops representing content space (sorry for the truly awful diagram):

    |------|------|
    |.........|.........|
    |..1.....|...2....|
    |.........|.........|
    |------|------|
    |........3.........|
    |------|------|

    Is there any way to position the 3rd div so that it begins where the tallest of the 2 divs above it ends? White space in the other column isnt an issue for us. I'm using external style sheets for layout.

  16. Internet design questions

    Date: 06/27/05     Keywords: browser

    QUESTION ONE:Do you have any criticism of my journal's typeface or colors? Too small or indistinct? I myself am having trouble seeing it on my father's laptop, and always increase my browser's text size.

    QUESTION TWO: Any tips for getting true color representation out of one's monitor? On our PC I set my blacks to black and design with deep color saturation in mind. When I look at my pages on other people's computers (e.g. my father's) I'm horrified that pale patterns are too subtle to be seen, or that everything looks so washed-out and sun-bleached. Is there a happy medium between how I'd like my designs to be viewed and how, realistically, most people will see them?

    QUESTION THREE: Do you still design for the lowest common denominator, meaning old, small, monitors? I have done this in the past, and now my sites look miniscule on laptops and an average person's internet setup.

  17. Regular expression

    Date: 06/26/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm using Dreamweaver and I need to get rid of a lot of content on one site. Basically, anything between

  18. tags (including the tags themselves). Is there a regular expression I can use in the Find and Replace that can do this? There are about 300 instances of the tag in the entire site so to do it by hand will take forever.

  19. questions and feedback

    Date: 06/26/05     Keywords: browser, css, web

    I am setting up a website HERE, and I want to know how to make it adjust to different window sizes. I always want the content to the right of the menu to be centered in its portion of the window. Right now put it in a tag called

    , with CSS defined as:

    p.main  {

        text-align: center;

        position: absolute;

        width: 600px;

        top: 20;

        left: 230;

        }

    Another simple question: Is there a simple way to get spacing between say, two images (like the buyers and sellers images on the page) without actually positioning each one using CSS?

    By the way, it would be much appreciated if people with browsers other than IE6 on a PC could give me some feedback on how this looks. I am planning on obtaining more views myself, but just haven't had the time.

  21. Question

    Date: 06/26/05     Keywords: html, web, google

    Hey, I have two basic web questions. The first is, how can I have my site refresh everytime someone visits? Whenever I'm working on quick updates or fixing typo's, I want to make sure that they constantly get the latest. Second question, for my site, I use only the meta description which is posted on my dreamweaver template. Thus, on every site, it contains the same description. Googlebot or MSNbot is only crawling on the index.html -- nothing else. What gives?

    Here's my site so you can look for yourself.

    Thanks
