  3. virtual community platforms...

    Date: 05/04/05     Keywords: technology

So... I wrote some stuff about virtual communities and the information technology they exist on. Instead of trying to create a list of virtual communities, I started to create a list of types of virtual communities and what tech they're based on.

I listed usenet, forums, irc, blogs, social networks, mmorpgs, and AGMs. Not the best list... granted... but I think it shows where I was headed with the concept. There's more detail in the original post.

So.. I post this here cause I'm interested in trying to create a much longer list... and though maybe you might have something to add.

According to my site stats, no one seems to venture much from my main page. Something must be really boring/wrong with my site that I'm not seeing.

No sure if this is the right place to post this, but I don't know where else to turn.

Please, if you have the time, try going to http://www.1up.com

All I want to know is if you CAN go there. I've tried with FireFox and IE, and niether work for me. BUT... AOL loads the site. What?!?

I'm very confused. For Firefox and IE, I get nothing... just a white screen... as it tries to load the site.

Does anyone know what could be happening to me?

    Thanks!

  9. A Good PHP Search Engine?

Date: 04/26/05     Keywords: php, mysql, html, sql, web

I'm looking for a good PHP search engine with full text indexing, the ability to crawl pages itself, preferably MySQL storage, and advanced search options. It'd also be nice if it rendered output in streamlined xhtml, or uses Smarty but not required.

    Any suggestions?

  10. Damn IE

Date: 04/26/05     Keywords: css, html, web

I'm making a website for my webdesign class using XHTML and CSS. I've got a little bit done and it validates on W3C and looks the way I want in Safari, Camino and Firefox (for Mac and Windows), but IE is not cooperating, and that is what the professor uses to grade these things. Basically what I have so far is a table set to span 100% of the window and it is flush against the top of the window. But in IE it's flush to the top and to the left, but there is space to the right of the table. Any idea as to why it's ignoring that I set the width to 100%?

Date: 04/25/05     Keywords: php, mysql, asp, sql, web, hosting

I just recently register my domain name, and now I'm asking for those that have domains with storage access what hosting company are you using ? I prefer for the hosting company to be in the USA, and if it's not at lease have payment options in USA dollars.

I would like for the hosting company to have the following for service
    FTP Access
    PHP
    ASP
    CGI-BIN
    MYSQL
    WEB MAIL
ALLOWS MULTIMEDIA (really important I've been searching around hosting sites, but the ones I'm finding doesn't allow it)
    SUB DOMAIN

and a good amount of space and bandwidth

Simple enough question, I should hope...

I wish to have a random wav or mp3 file to play in the background of the page each time it is visited.

How do I make this so?

I have a folder where all the sound files are located, so I'm assuming I'd have to target that somehow, yes?

Untold Mysteries of CSS, by Molly Holzchlag

it's no breakthrough, but i thought it useful (eventhough it's not new, it's 4 months old). at least it explains the universal selector in detail. i finally understood why IE doesn't interpret it correctly. :)

  16. Problems with Flash

    Date: 04/22/05     Keywords: html

I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas on this flash problem that is driving me crazy?

The sites temporary address is http://www.megahunter.net/goodman/index.shtml. Now the client is telling me that no one in their office can see the flash in the upper right hand corner, but he can see it fine from his home computer. I directed him to another site with flash and he can see that sites flash fine so he has the plugin. I also thought maybe it was cache issue so I had him clear out his history and delete files and cookies, but that didn't work either.

Does anyone else out there not see the flash or have any ideas? Thanks

  17. Dreamweaver Template Error

Date: 04/22/05     Keywords: php, programming, web

Hey guys. Newbie here. I've run into a little problem that's baffling me and I'm hoping someone would have some advice.

I've been maintaining and updating the company I work for's website for more than a year now(It wasn't created by me). It's quite heavy with PHP programming. Anyway, the link section, which appears at the top of every page of the site, is a template. The other day, I wanted to add a new link into the template(as I've done many times before). When I saved it, and it updated the template across all the pages, it gave me the following error on the index.php(the main) page:

"There is an error at line 47, column 29(absolute position 2040) of "C:\Website Name\index.php": Duplicate editable regions of name "head"."

I'm really stumped by this, because firstly I didn't make any changes to index.php, secondly I didn't add another editable region to it either, and thirdly, the only coding at line 47 of the index page is "!-- InstanceEndEditable --, between tags. I also can't get rid of the extra editable region, because it shows up as grey, locked coding on the index.php page, and it does not show up in the coding of the template page at all.

Any help/advice would really be appreciated.

  18. css & state machines..

    Date: 04/22/05     Keywords: css

A couple of years ago I was writing Unrealscript for a game dev shop... One of the unique things about Unrealscript is the fact that a state machine is actually part of the language.

A while back, I got to fantasizing about what I wished I could do with CSS and a state machine seemed like a natural fit.

  19. Marketing Ideas ? ? ?

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: web

Hi everyone, I am new to this community and fairly new to live journal. I work full time as a web designer, but have recently started my own site trying to get some local business. My site is www.code9design.com.

My question is does anyone have any good ideas about how to generate business other than through search engine optimization? I really think my potential clients would be happy with the quality of work they get for the price they pay, I just need to get clients!

I obviously don’t have much money to spend on advertising, I was thinking about getting in the local yellow pages. Does anyone else have any good ideas? I would take any suggestions for my site also, thanks.

  20. css help

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: css

I'm building a simple site and don't know too much css, I'm really working on it though :)

But for the meantime, I made a table for the basic layout and I have an image in the backround of one of the td's. I want it to not repeat, and be on the right.

    using this:

    .norepeat { background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed; background-image: url(image.jpg); background-position: right center}

it works properly in IE but firfox actually sticks the thing in the top right corner of the entire page, not just the td. I'm a little stumped *L*

Did I miss a step? I tried finding the solution on my own but I can't really spend too much time on this.

Anybody got a quick fix for me? Thanks!
