1. Hiding from Spam-bots and search engines

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: java

    Hi guys,

Wondering the most common techniques for hiding emails from harvesters and certain details from search engines.

I've found a few different javascripts for the emails, but I was wondering how you guys go with your current choices.

I also have a few staff members' names that we want hidden from search engines (but we still want the page to be search-able). Other than converting these details to images, does anyone have any simple ideas? How about unicode? Does anyone know if search engines can read it?

  3. Quote on professional work.

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: web

Hello, my name is Lindsay and I am not new to this community...but more like a lurker ;) I currently work as the online editor/webmaster for my city's newspaper, and I do a lot of freelance web and graphic design on the side.

Recently I was asked by a neighboring county's city board to construct an informational website for them from scratch....design, logos, coding and all. This project will more than likely come out to no more than 20 or so pages, and basic layout/design scheme with all artwork done by myself.

I was instructed to let them know what my charges are...and I am at a loss. I am still in the transitional period where I am still getting used to being PAID for my efforts (not just making the trade for services and portfolio material)...and I have little knowledge of the fair market value on a professional website such as this.

    Any suggestions?

They also asked me to name my rate for weekly/monthly updates needed. Where I will be paid that rate per hour for the time it takes me to drive to the county (15 mins), the time it takes me to finish the updates and maintenance, and the drive home.

    Please help!

  4. website

    Date: 04/21/05     Keywords: browser, web

I finally got my website finished enough that I could post it. I didn't try to get fancy with it, I just wanted to present the facts with a little bit of style. As with most of my websites, I am already tired of this one, and have already started redesigning it in my head. Until that happens, I guess I'll leave this one up for a bit. I still need to make a few more tweeks to it, add a few more pieces to the "work" page, and make the "other" page which will contain odd projects and links to other stuff of mine (like photo's and things).

If you guys could take a look at it and give me a little feedback, I would really appreciate it. I've tested it on all major browsers on a Mac, but I haven't seen it on a Windows machine yet. If a couple of you PC users out there could send me a screen shot, I would also be appreciative of that.

    Thanks

  7. Centering a Web Page

    Date: 04/20/05     Keywords: browser, web

Ok, I'm wondering if anyone knows how I would center the content of a web page in my browser. I tried changing the left hand margin, but if the browser gets smaller, it means I have to horizontal scroll to see alll of the content. Is there a way of centering so that it moves with the browser size?

    Date: 04/20/05     Keywords: no keywords

what i want to do with this page: www.rachelferro.com/edge/pawtucket/comp1/joe_skramstad1.htm
is keep the manual slideshow the way that it is but i want to place thumbnails of each numbered pic on both sides of the main pic window so that the user can go to a specific pic if they want to instead of having to scroll through all of them. in order to save some time, before trying a million different things and getting discouraged i figured i'd post it up here and hope someone will take a look at the code and tell me a super easy way to do it :) :) :)
    thanks

  9. Opera 8

    Date: 04/18/05     Keywords: browser

This wont get nearly as much press as a Firefox point release, but Opera 8 has been released. (it's to be officially annouced tomorrow, but you can download it now)

I don't care much if you use it or not (I do care a bit, it's hugely underrated), but you designer types might want to download it for testing. To be honest, everyone should give it a go, though I've learnt from experience not to suggest to a Firefox user that there might be something better - they get all scary-like.

It's just as standards complient as Gecko, arguably moreso, so if you code correctly there shouldn't really be anything to worry about. But as it is a different rendering engine, at least testing in it would be sensible. You really have no excuse.

  10. Adobe to Acquire Macromedia

    Date: 04/18/05     Keywords: html, web

Okay, so those of you that haven't heard yet, the title is true. Adobe is to Acquire Macromedia - for 3.4 billion.

This, I think, will bring about a change on the web - we remember that Macromedia didn't make flash themselves, they bought it... And now with the latest developments with Adobe.... *wipes forehead* Adobe has a lot of muscle. A hell of a lot.

*grin* Adobe Flash. Adobe Flex. Doesn't really have the same ring to it, does it?

  16. An interesting quote.

Date: 04/15/05     Keywords: browser, css, html, web, google

I was just reading this explanation on google maps and thought this quote was interesting:

"I also think it bears noting that Google is pulling out all the stops to build rich web apps, no matter how weirdly they have to hack the browser to make them go. And I strongly believe that this is a trend that is here to stay -- XHTML Strict/CSS/etc be damned. At the end of the day, what really matters to users is compelling apps that let them get their work done quickly."

Hey everyone, I am having a crazy time trying to design a site using HTML and Flash. The one thing I can't figure out how to do is write a command into a button to open up a new window with a certain size (320x240). How do I specify size opening a new URL or is there some other way?

  19. Blogger help

    Date: 04/14/05     Keywords: xml, web

Ok so Im trying to use blogger.com as a means to provide my client with an easily updatable NEWS section that will auto-post to the website I am designing for him.

    The blogger.com site is http://vmnews.blogspot.com/

I read a little and found that I can link to this: http://vmnews.blogspot.com/atom.xml for use in my client's site. I would link that source into the news section or whatever,

As you can see the top link looks fine, and is formatted as I want it. The bottom link looks totally different, and I can't find out how to edit the looks of it. Also, linking the bottom link to my site displays that big ugly yellow box at the top of the news sections. This is really ugly, and unexceptable.

How do I do this? Im sure there are people out there that use blogger for these type of things.

    HELP!

    Date: 04/14/05     Keywords: java

I worked with someone in a previous job who left to pursue her marketing skills.. she approached me the other day with a site she worked on and asked that I help her clean things up a bit.. she has a great design and a good color pallette.. just needed a few tweaks.. one thing I changed was the layout.. she created the look in center tables on a white background.. i changed things to autostretch a bit and did some image compression changing her jpegs to gifs.. also threw in a javascript function on the photo page.. so how'd we do??
