1. Drag and Drop Listbox

    Date: 02/17/09 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: database, asp, sql, web

    Hi,
    What I am trying to do this time is create an asp.net listbox from
    an SQL Server 2005 result set (done) which then users can sort the
    records to form the running order within the same Listbox and then
    submit all the records including the new running order back into
    the database. Each record has already been automatically assigned
    a running order number based on their position in the old website.

    I am looking for suggestions on the quickest and *easist* way to do
    this, examples would be much appreciated. My web application is asp.net
    written in C#.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Date: 01/05/09 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp

    I need separator lines in the dynamic menu section of an asp:menu control.

    However, I only want separator lines between certain menu items - not all of them.

    Is that possible ?

  3. C# CheckBoxes!

    Date: 10/16/08 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web

    Okay, I am writing a small webapp in asp.net C# 2.0 after a few years
    since I last done .net (which was vb.net by the way). I have a GridView
    which is filtered by a dropdown, the gridview is listed below. I can't
    remember for the life of me how to catch the checkboxes posted back from
    the form? and I can't find any simple examples online. Help?

  4. Email Message Id

    Date: 08/19/08 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web

    Hello everybody,
    Is there a way here to get email message Id right after you send it with the SMPT client?
    I am creating a web application on ASP.NET 2.0 and it uses mail server EXIM to send emails.

    Message Id I mean that unique identifier, which is being set when you send an email.
    Using telnet:

    $ telnet yourmailhost.whatever.com 25
    << 220 yourmailhost.whatever.com blah blah
    >> HELO yourclientname
    << 250 yourmailhost.whatever.com Hello [ip address]
    >> mail from:someaddress@hotmail.com
    << 250 2.1.0 yourmailhost.whatever.com ...Sender OK
    >> rcpt to:someaddress@yourmailhost.whatever.com
    << 250 2.1.5 someaddress@yourmailhost.whatever.com
    >> data
    << 354 Please start mail input.
    >> Subject: Test message

  5. uuugh.... database issues

    Date: 07/13/08 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: database, asp

    I'm trying to set up a database connection with ASP.NET in Dreamweaver MX 2004 (yeah, a little older...), and everything in the site has a check mark that needs to before you add a connection, and I add the database file, and even hit test and it registers fine. Then when I go to add a new record set, I select the database, but it says "***No table found". So apparently it's ok with the file path, it just can't read the database tables.

    I've made sure the .net framework was all good to go, and I downloaded the MDAC 2.7 files and got those all set. Is there something I'm missing? I'm trying to work with Access and asp.net because that's what a position I'm trying to move into uses, so, I don't really have other options.

    Also, I'm thinking maybe there's an issue with drivers because even when I try to hand code it with examples from http://www.w3schools.com/ASPNET/aspnet_repeater.asp, when I call it up in either IE or Firefox, it just displays the code....
    any ideas?

  6. Multiple web.config files ?

    Date: 03/31/08 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, security, web

    I have content that I only want authorized users to see and then content that I want joe public to be able to view.

    I found this article that suggests having two web.config files. So the authorized user content would be in a separate folder with its own web.config file:
    http://www.asp.net/learn/security/tutorial-07-vb.aspx

    Is that how you would do it ? (There's no date on the article so I didnt know if this was the latest thinking)

    Thanks :)

  7. PHP page issues?

    Date: 03/11/09 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, css, html, asp, java, web

    Hi, so I run a site here and it's been... well, going swimmingly for the past couple of years, but for some reason, all of the PHP pages stopped working a couple of days ago - as in, every time I try to access a page with a .php extension, I get a "The page cannot be found" error. However, I can access most other extensions - my index page ends with a .html, so that works, plus I can get to my style.css and javascript.js pages, along with my image files. But if I log in with FTP, all my .php files are still there, and if I open one up its content is still there as well.

    I also haven't updated the site since the end of January, and I don't think my host has done anything either, so nothing we did could have triggered it.

    Furthermore, I uploaded a test file onto the site and discovered that in addition to .php extensions, .phtml and .xhtml files didn't work either, though .html, .asp, .txt, and everything else I tried did.

    Anyone have an idea as to what might be happening? With the exception of my index page, all of my other web pages end with .php, so... this is kind of an inconvenience, to say the least. D: Thanks!

    I found this code a while ago that creates a drop down search box that will search a sharepoint list. I am extremely new to this so I am clueless in how I can modify this code to suit my needs. The code redirects to the same page with querystring data added to the URL. I was able to modify the drop down list and I changed the Column names to match the columns in my list. I changed to column names because it wasnt returning any records and I believe it is because it is referencing the columns that dont match my list. Once I did that it didnt work, It wouldnt return any records. I have a feeling it is because of this piece of code:

    this is on my domain controller, this is a HP raid5 array consisting of 4 72gb scsi disks. how can you get bad clusters on a raided drive? how can I know which physical drive is failing?

    did I actually lose any data/get any data corruption?

    I have backups of course, the problem if its hardware failure, and I am going to do migration to windows 2008 r2 from windows 2003, it will still take sometime to initiate things, buying a single replacement scsi might be viable but if I can't identify the drive and have to get 4 scsi drives and rebuild the array 1 disk at the time, it would be problematic not to mention prone to disaster.

    Date: 09/14/09 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: asp

    Dear Colleague,

    Would you be willing to participate in the survey about the role of personality in a project team? I am conducting the survey as a part of the research thesis “Discovering Intertype Relations in a Project Team” for New York University. The study is interested to find out the correlation between personality type and how different personality types influence each other while working together in a project team. Participants must be willing to answer an online questionnaire which consists of two parts: the first part of the questionnaire measures your personality type, and the second part reveals your communication choices. It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete the survey.

    If you are interested in participating in the survey, upon completion of the research you will receive a summary report and a brief profile of your personality type.

    If you are interested and willing to volunteer, but have questions please contact me by email address listed below, otherwise you can access the survey at

    Hi,
    I am working on a web site (ASP.NET, FW4) which has a secure section (login required).
    I would like to clear the session variables when customer closes the browser.
    To achieve that I have placed a hidden button on the MasterPage (have tested, it works) and then trying to call the ASP method using JavaScript.

    (Also tried to put this call into body tag: )

    CustomLogoff is not being called. Thought when calling it like this:

    It works fine (on button click of course).

    Is there a way to make it work on browser closing too?

    Where do you draw the line between looking good and working well? I feel obligated to give my clients as much control over the content of their website, but in doing so I think I subtract from what is visually possible.

    How do you work around giving the client the freedom to update the content while still maintaining a visually pleasing site? I sometimes struggle keeping the creative juice flowing when [almost] every aspect of the site can be editable.

    There is very little reference for this anywhere on the internet that I can find. MSDN has the properties listed with what data type the property is expected to be.

    I'm hoping someone here may be able to help? My head has been scratched.

    My three main points of reference are:

        #    Properties by Namespace        http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa486269%28v=EXCHG.65%29.aspx

    I have also looked at the MAPI references.

    I cannot get the signature, nor the attachment to send. I have tried with/without content-base, content-disposition, attachmentfilename, signaturehtml, signaturetext and autoaddsignature in all combinations.

    1. Is it possible to add signatures to outgoing messages through WebDAV with PHP? If so, how? I could] set the signatures up in my script, but I would like the user to be able to edit them via Outlook Web Access (OWA).

    2. Is it possible to add attachment to outgoing messages through WebDAV with PHP? If so, how? A report will be generated before the mail functions are called. The report will be saved locally (e.g., http://localhost/report/2010-12-19.pdf) and not on the Exchange server (http://server.com/Exchange) -- I assume this is what content-base is for.

    I know there are name spaces in the code that are unused. The emails send fine, but do not come with attachments or signatures.

  16. .Net custom control help

    Date: 02/23/11 (C Sharp)    Keywords: asp, java, seo, google

    I want to use a SEO friendly link button on my page. Mind you i am sure that the page is really not all that accessible as the page I am linking to will still have javascript running on it - but thats besides the point. The correct way to do this would be to put the href thats generated by a link button into the onclick event and return void or false or whatever. And then have a SEO / accessibility friendly URL in the HREF. This seems to be what Google recommends and t seems to make sense to me.

    I found this nifty .CS file here - http://files.codes-sources.com/fichier.aspx?id=44402&f=CrawlableLinkButton.cs. Essentially it inherits a linkbutton and adds a NavigateUrl parameter to it so that I can put whatever href I want in there. Awesome. Just what I was looking for.

    Trouble is I have no idea how to include it in my code. I feel ashamed for admitting my ignorance here. I can register a control at the top of the page, but I think I need to either use a .dll (like I do with things like the AjaxToolKit) and then reference the assembly name and the namespace. Or I can register an ascx control, and set the tagname and the src. How do I reference this .cs file in the aspx page the way this dude does? I feel like I am missing something so obvious.

    For example:
    <%@ Register Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" Namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" TagPrefix="asp" %>

    And:
    <%@ Register TagPrefix="uc1" TagName="videocontrol" src="~/controls/videocontrol.ascx" %>

    Assume for the moment I have the file stored in ~/controls/CrawlableLinkButton.cs, and I want to refer to his control as he does:
    ' />

    Any help here? I am a bit thick and getting more and more tired. I know deep down I am a good .Net developer, honest - so why can I not figure out the little things?

  17. Socket Programming

    Date: 02/09/11 (C Sharp)    Keywords: asp, web, microsoft

    Hi,

    I have created a socket connection as described on MDSN web site:
    client: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bew39x2a(v=VS.85).aspx
    server: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fx6588te(v=VS.85).aspx

    It works fine. Events here are:
    1) Client sends request
    2) Server receives it
    3) Server sends response
    4) Server shutdown the socket
    5) Client receives response

    Then, I know, that between 2) an 3) might be a time gap. I want to send few interim responses like:
    2a) Server sends response: Still working on your request.
    The problem here is that I cannot send a response without shutting down the socket, but as I shout it down I am not able to send neither 3) nor another 2a)

    Is it possible for client to get response without closing the socket connection? Something like .flush()?

    Thanks for response, the problem solved.

    That was not the server, but the client. Take a look at ReceiveCallback:
    private static void ReceiveCallback( IAsyncResult ar ) {
            try {
                // Retrieve the state object and the client socket
                // from the asynchronous state object.
                StateObject state = (StateObject) ar.AsyncState;
                Socket client = state.workSocket;

                // Read data from the remote device.
                int bytesRead = client.EndReceive(ar);

                if (bytesRead > 0) {
                    // There might be more data, so store the data received so far.
                state.sb.Append(Encoding.ASCII.GetString(state.buffer,0,bytesRead));

                    // Get the rest of the data.
                    client.BeginReceive(state.buffer,0,StateObject.BufferSize,0,
                        new AsyncCallback(ReceiveCallback), state);
                } else {
                    // All the data has arrived; put it in response.
                    if (state.sb.Length > 1) {
                        response = state.sb.ToString();
                    }
                    // Signal that all bytes have been received.
                    receiveDone.Set();
                }
            } catch (Exception e) {
                Console.WriteLine(e.ToString());
            }
        }

    If client reads any bytesRead more than 0, it will store it in buffer and keep waiting for more data to come. Only when 0 bytes read it calls receiveDone.Set(); which finalize the receive process. Now I understand why it was working only after socket became closed.

  18. Help with Error Module

    Date: 07/07/10 (C Sharp)    Keywords: html, asp, web

    I posted my question here originally last night but I figured I might as well reach out to the LJ crowd to see if anyone here has answers.

    I implemented an error handling httpmodule similar to the one described here:

    http://wiki.asp.net/page.aspx/917/neater-handling-of-exceptions/

    If I run the application locally through the Visual Studio Development Server everything works as expected. If I run it through IIS with a wildcard mapping set up in the ISAPI extensions to go to the dotnet dll, and I have the checkbox to "Verify that the file exists" turned off - it works as expected for .aspx files but not for anything else.

    In my web.config I have the following:

    And under IIS errors I have it set up so that 404 errors go to the same 404 URL in web.config.

    The behavior I am expecting is that if I go to appliationname.com/xyz.html and the page does not exist, it is kicked into the error handling code. The error handling module is set up to log the event and I should get an email. And even failing that the 404 page should still load in IIS settings.

    The error handling code does kick in if I go to appliationname.com/xyz.aspx - a page which does not exist. But for any other file extension the 404 processing is handled by IIS. So any error logging I am doing in the HTTPModule is not getting called.

    When I run an HTML page it does get processed to some extent. The code I have in Application_BeginRequest in global.asax does get called. But at the end of that block it stops processing.

    The application I am working on is a migration of older code. I want to be alerted to every 404 that comes through the application so that I can see if we missed anything. I could potentially get this sort of information from the IIS logs or I could try to move the error logging to the code behind of the error pages instead of the HTTPModule. But I shouldn't have to should I? Why won't it process HTML? And why does it work when when running the application through Visual Studio but bot when I run it through IIS?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  19. Application stops owing to callback from unmanaged DLL

    Date: 09/16/09 (C Sharp)    Keywords: asp, microsoft

    Why does my c# application stop after receiving a callback from unmanaged DLL?

    I've just encountered this very strange problem. And wonder why it could happen.

    The similar situation is described by someone on MSDN-site.
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/clr/thread/25bd7c1d-373f-4ef7-a64b-a101897b6b9a/

    But nobody there brought a clear explanation of that yet.

    This little article described how to deal with callbacks from unmanaged code.
    http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/win32_to_net.aspx
    I think I did everything properly so that the program works well. But it doesn't.
    If necessary, I could share snippets of my code.

    Thank you.

  20. SQL Job Administrators - SQL 2008 R2

    I'm thinking about doing this because our number of ad-hoc requests to run jobs has increased to an annoying level.  Does anyone out there have experience putting this into practice?
