Computer freezing up

Date: 04/20/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: spyware

Last year I had a problem with my CD writer. It just stopped working. The red light would come on and it wouldn't open anymore. I stopped attempting to use it since I had a DVD writer and that works fine.

The past couple of days while I'm using my computer I'll hear noises coming from the area of this unusable CD drive and the red light will be on. It's like it's trying to be used but I'm not doing anything that would be using it. During this time the computer will freeze up for about 15 seconds. This will continue every few minutes until I reboot. I'm on Windows XP.

I've run my spyware and it still occurs. I've looked through the running processes and don't see anything too unusual there. What is ctfmon.exe? That is the only thing running that I don't really recognize.

    Thanks for any suggestions.
