My onboard sound thinks it's better than the sound card...

Hey there. I've got a bit of an annoyance with my PC and I was hoping someone would be able to help me with it.

The motherboard has an onboard sound card, but I bought a 5.1 card so I could use my speakers. However, in order to use the front ports (the mic and headphones) I need to have the onboard sound on instead of the new sound card.

It wouldn't be that big of a problem, if I didn't have to keep switching out my speakers with my headset.

    So:
Is this a hardware or software problem?
And can I switch the front ports to be used with the sound card?

Thanks for the help, if I get any. :D
