Genuine Windows

So my boyfriend sent his laptop into Best Buy for repairs. When he got it back it began to tell him windows was not genuine. He sent it back to Best Buy, and they supposedly "fixed" it. Yeah, right. It stayed fine for two weeks and began spitting out that it wasn't genuine again.

Since Best Buy doesn't seem to want to fix the problem they've caused, we're wondering if we can avoid having to buy a vista product key. My school offers vista and windows xp "upgrade" CDs. Would using either of these on his laptop fix the genuine problem?
