Reinstalling Windows problems

Date: 12/16/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus

I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP and I'm having some problems.

I get the following error message:

"A problems has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:
    ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF79ED528, 0x00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

    - How can I check for viruses or remove anything or check the configuration without accessing Windows?
    - What is CHKDSK /F and how do I run it?

For now I'll try reinstalling once more, but I'm predicting the same result. Thanks in advance for any help, and I'm an idiot when it comes to computers so assume I know nothing.
