Even when I turn off viruscan, task schedualer, screensaver, and the modem, something still keeps interrupting when I try to run scandisk or defrag.

Which ones are safe to turn off? Is the problem something else? Could all this be causing my computer (Windows98) to be slowing down despite removing spyware? Is the moon really made of cheese?
