Help! Video Card Glitches making games look distorted.
Date: 06/17/07
Keywords: no keywords
Hi there, hoping someone familiar with video cards can help field this one.
I bought a new video card, which has worked well for a while, but now tends to extend some polygons WAY too far. Examples under the cut.
As you can see, Deus Ex has become Aeus Cx by the looks of the logo, and Max Payne looks like he had a duct tape accident, with bizarre holes right through him!
I've tried old drivers, new drivers, any idea I can imagine to solve this, and only one idea remains.
My AGP port has a broken end, going from [--------] to [-------- instead. Would this be causing the error? Since it didn't reach the metal pins when it broke, and never affected the old card.
Oh, lastly, the new card is a GeForce 7300 GT, and the motherboard contains a Pentium 4 1.6Ghz CPU and 512MB SD RAM, running Win XP SP2.
Hopefully some of you have a few ideas on how to solve this! :)
(These games look amazing, but would look damn near perfect without these glitches!)
I'm hoping it's not a replacement job, but thankfully I have the receipt for this AU$189 card!

Hi,
I have recently downloaded movies but they are broken up into parts - like 6 parts to one movie.
I wanted to ask if anyone in this community knows of any free software/freeware that would combine & stich up all the parts into one complete movie file.
if anyone does, could you let me know.
thank you to anyone that helps in advance.

Wireless issues
Date: 06/16/07
Keywords: no keywords
I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 router (an older one) and in the past I have had issues where my computer says that I am getting an excellent wireless connection yet Firefox and Internet Explorer do not connect. I have 3 other computers going wireless as well, and while one gets similar problems, they don't occur at the same time. To fix it, I have to restart the router.
It used to happen every few days, but now it occurs every time I turn my computer on, come back from standby or even walk away for a while. I'm not sure if it's my router, or maybe even my wireless adapter (it's a Dell usb one that came with my computer).
I had tried to get a D-link router several months ago, but it was incompatible with my internet and I ended up spending nearly 9 hours on the phone between Bright House tech support and D-Link. In the end, neither of them knew what was wrong.
My household had AOL before, (not my choice at all) and now it is simply Bright House since AOL is no more and we don't have to connect via AOL anymore. I uninstalled AOL from my computer and that still hasn't helped the issue.
Any suggestions?
Thank you for any help.

Reformatting a Protected Laptop
Date: 06/14/07
Keywords: security
I recently inherited a laptop that my late uncle (insert euphemism for "stole" here) from his old workplace.
It is running Windows 2000 Professional and seems to have a lot of added security measures to prevent the computer from being stolen (oh, the irony). The BIOS is even set so that I can't change the boot order and boot from my XP installation CD. Ergo, I don't think there's a way for me to boot from the CD.
When I run setup, it won't let me delete the main (and only) partition because it "has necessary setup files on it"- and I can't install on said partition because it already has Windows 2000 on it.
With that said, two questions:
1) When accessing WinXP setup while already logged in on Win2k, I have the option to "upgrade" instead of doing an advanced setup- but do I even want to do that, since it will keep the existing programs, settings, etc.?
2) Is there some other way to reformat this computer? I don't have the CD to restore it to factory settings.

Can anyone recommend a good SD card recovery program? A friend of mine accidentally deleted all of her photos off an SD card. I would assume that, as with Windows, they can be recovered easily with the right program, correct?

Photoshop CS

I recently re-installed windows to keep my computer from completely crashing and losing everything. I left everything on the computer and just re-installed windows.
Before hand, photoshop was giving me problems, but so was my internet explorer & everything else. I figured, most of the problems were fixed by me re-installing windows.
Now when I use photoshop, it works fine, until I go to click the color palete to switch colors. It gives me the regular "program not responding" message and it closes on it's on, I've tried to stop it & it doesn't it work.
Should I re-install photoshop?

Have default folders point to personal folders
Date: 06/10/07
Keywords: no keywords
Ok, I have windows XP home, and I don't use the 'My Music' or 'My Videos' folder. Since I keep my music/video files in a personal folder, I'd like to know if it's possible to make the 'My Music' folder point to my actual music folder, and the 'My Videos' folder point to my actual videos folder? I like keeping my personal files in one central location for easy backup, so I don't want to put my media files in those default folders. Rather, i'd like those folders to point to my personal folders. Is there any way to do that?
thanks!

Strange Wireless adapter trouble
Date: 06/07/07
Keywords: software
Here at home we have a Linksys wireless router. Inside my comp is a wireless adapter, also Linksys. We've been having trouble with the signal dropping due to lan phone line intereference(hopefully fixed today) so the signal drops a lot and then comes back. The problem is when it comes back my computer takes a long time to become unfrozen if other programs are running. I tried updating the drivers for the adapter(already updated for the router). Linksys provides software, but it seems just a reinstallation, not a driver update, which is odd. Anyway, any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I'm reluctant to call my comp manufacturer's tech support because i call them a lot due to their aweful computers(widowpc, stay awaaaay).

Browser trouble.

I'm using the newest version of Firefox, and I'm running NoScript and Adblock. Often, even if I've allowed scripts and have whitelisted an entire site with Adblock, I still can't see parts of the site. Typically they are parts that I don't miss, but sometimes they are as in this example:
http://artflick.com/
At this site I can only see the outline of where the main image should be, and the links written as simple words. No images show up at all.
Any ideas?

Serious lagging issues

Keywords: rss, software, html, java, security, virus, web, spyware, yahoo, microsoft
This may be a basic problem, but it's an extremely frustrating one.
There are times using my computer when it is just extremely lag-gy. One of the primary times is when I come back to it and wake it from the screen saver. Let me give you an example of a usual situation, as it happened just now.
I came in to the computer room to look up something on the computer. It came out of the screen saver, and was sitting on a FireFox screen. I went to file and New Window, and it took THIRTY-FIVE SECONDS to open a new FireFox window. Once it dragged itself through all that it's fine, but that's a terribly annoying problem to have.
Heh, I just went to the search function to find Hijack This, and it took 17 seconds for the Search window to come up! It hasn't always been this way, things used to pop right up! Now, I know that a reformat would probably fix it all but...wow that can be a headache. Could it be anything else?
I am running a Compaq Presario with a 3200+ AMD Athlon XP Processor and Windows XP. 512 MB SDRAM, 200GB HD.

MS Office
Date: 05/27/07
Keywords: no keywords
I recently purchased a new Compaq Presario with Windows Vista. Today, for the first time since purchasing the computer, I had to use MS Office (Word, specifically). Upon opening it, I was asked for my name and initials and I entered them, and then was told to enter a Product Key to verify it.
I have no idea where this is.
I've searched through the paperwork that came with the device. I typed "Product Key" into the Windows Search and it turned up nothing. I clicked the Help icon and it said if my Office was preinstalled, the Product Key would be found under some kind of icon (it gave me a picture of, I guess, the icon, but I can't find it).
Any ideas on where this mysterious Product Key is located?
Thanks in advance!
