1. Double dose of questions

Date: 05/21/07     Keywords: rss, software, html, java, web, spyware, yahoo, microsoft, google

I have two computering questions I hope I can find assistance for. One is for me, and one is for my mom.

Mine: I have a Digital Camera with an Lexar Media 32MB MMC Memory Card. I put the card in the slot in my computer, it reads it, everything is dandy. I take the card out, go take some more pictures. Come back to my computer, stick the card back in, and...NOTHING. Light doesn't come on, card isn't seen. I make sure to use the proper removal procedure each time (stopping the process so the light goes off). The only way to make my computer see the card after it's already seen it once is to completely restart. You can imagine how annoying that is...help!

Mom's: My mother has a worse problem. Her computer randomly crashes. Completely shuts down and starts again. She has no idea why.

I had her run Hijack This, and here is her log.

  2. iPod help

    Date: 05/21/07     Keywords: no keywords

Having a lot of trouble with this iPod doodad...

I hooked it up to the computer, added songs to my Sync list, and Started Sync. Windows Media Player said that all of the files I wanted to Sync required conversion. The Player converted all the songs, then copied them onto the iPod. However, none of the songs are showing up when I turn on the actual device.

  3. Windows start-up error

    Date: 05/19/07     Keywords: software, google

Hey everyone, I'm hoping you might be able to help with this problem my mom is having. When she starts her computer, she gets this error message:

"we apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully" and it goes on to say somethinga bout a change in hardware or software may have caused it. I googled it a bit, and it looks like a Norton Update could have possibly caused this, but otherwise everything (according to her and my sister, since I do not live there currently) was working perfectly fine earlier in the day.

I tried having them start in safe mode (or any of the other options that pop up), but nothing happens when they select the option to do so. I also tried to have her restart the computer with the factory DVD in the drive (And Insignia running Win XP Home), but it seems that is a one-way ticket to restoring the computer to the factory settings only, thereby wiping all of her data.

The only realistic option I can see at this point is to drive home with my computer, hook her HDD as secondary to mine, and get all her files backed up so I can wipe and restore it. Any suggested on how to fix this so that it doesn't have to come to that?

    Thanks in advance!

  4. How to change default picture viewer

    Date: 05/19/07     Keywords: microsoft

Hi, I was wondering how to change the default of my picture viewer. I have four: Nero Photosnap Viewer; Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

The default is currently set to Nero Photosnap Viewer although I could not remember if I was asked to change the default picture viewer when I installed the Nero Suite. I would like to reset the default to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and I don't know what to do.

    Please help? Thanks so much.

  5. Problems with my USB ports? Maybe? meep...

    Date: 05/17/07     Keywords: no keywords

Ok, so Im using a HP Pavilion dv1000 laptop, its less than a year old and... Im having issues. Fortunatly its still under warrenty, but if at all possible I'd like to avoid the trip to the service center (with people who tend to replace things that usually dont need to be replaced e_e).

So heres my issue. After a few months of use I started having problems with my touchpad and wireless mouse that came with my computer. Actually come to think of it I have had problems with the wireless mouse since I got the thing, but I just thought it was the battery that was low or something. But then my wireless mouse would die, and after a few minutes my touchpad would go too. At first it wasn't so bad cause I could restart my computer and my touch pad would come back but not my mouse. Then it started to get bad. My touch pad would freeze up and in the worse cases, I would get 3 or 4 warnings that my USB ports weren't working and then a BSOD (Blue screen of death). After I got a BSOD, it wouldn't even boot up for a good couple of hours.

Now, if I turn off my computer and turn it on again the touch pad will work for about 5 minutes and then stop functioning (same with the wireless mouse). I found a way to by pass this though. If I let the laptop sit undisturbed for 10-20 minutes, when I come back to it my touch pad and wireless mouse will be working fine and I wont enounter any problems. I got into the habit of never turning off my computer, but Im starting to get really frustrated with this. Especially since its a new computer.

I have some expierence working with Desktop hardware, but I've never come even close to laptops. Is there anything I can do to remedy the situation?

  6. Wireless connection

    Date: 05/14/07     Keywords: no keywords

I just got a Linksys Broadband Router (WRT54G). My laptop is connected to it (wired connection) and can go online just fine. My desktop PC is roughly 30 feet away and I'm using a D-Link DWL-G120 AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless USB Adapter. It recognizes the presence of the wireless network, but signal strength is extremely low and most of the time it won't connect. What could be the problem?

  7. firefox address bar gone!

    Date: 05/11/07     Keywords: no keywords

As always, someone uses my laptop and I get it back all screwed up. The sad thing is, the person I let use my laptop was the cable guy, so he could install my internet.

So I get it back and I notice my address bar is gone in firefox. All of my other toolbars are still there, but even when I go to vew:toolbars I can't find the address bar.

Anyone know how to get it back?

  10. Erg, why cant I just play my damn game?

    Date: 05/09/07     Keywords: asp

Hey everyone, I have a rather annoying problem.  The specs of my PC will be listed at the bottom of this post.  The problem is my computer blue screens all the time with page_fault errors and irq_not_less etc etc errors, and while I had read a little bit on it, I could not fix this problem.  I swapped out nearly every single part except for the CD-ROM drives and CPU, I pulled out my sound card, TV card, tried different RAM, PSU, video card, and even bought another motherboard.  Sometimes the blue screen lists a specific  process, sometimes its tcpip.sys.  It does not always display that process, but its one of the few I have seen but I cannot remember the rest off the top of my head.  Then when  I try to play battlefield 2142, it gives me a "sane memory error" that is generated from battlefield, and seems to happen in the middle of loading a map.  The problem originally started when I upgrade my evga nvidia 6800 to a bfg tech nvidia 7800gs (agp), but the problem again was not resolved when I put my old 6800 back in. The system specs are as follows:

    AMD athlon 64 3500+
    abit AV8
    2x512mb Crucial Ballistix
    80gb SATA HD
    BFG Nvidia 7800GS AGP
    Creative Soundblaster Audigy2
    Happauge WinTV tuner
    550W Aspire PSU
    WinXP Pro

  11. Getting info off a hard drive

    Date: 05/06/07     Keywords: no keywords

Is it possible for a computer repair place to get info off of a hard drive (basically everything in the My Documents folder) without the actual computer working? If I brought my hard drive to someone, would they be able to get the info off it it?

My old computer crapped out on me - the guy at the computer repair shop it's at is telling me that it needs a new motherboard, processor, and power supply - none of which I'm willing to pay for since it's a 7 year old computer and I have a spiffy laptop that I've been doting over for the past two years. He says he doesn't know how to get the info off the hard drive without fixing what needs to be done.

I gave him another computer I had and asked him if he could just put the hard drive from Computer A into it, but he said that was impossible. True? False?

I just really want the pictures that I have on that hard drive (of my nephews growing up, etc.) and don't want to pay him $200+ to fix a computer that I was planning on throwing out anyway.

  12. csrss.exe

Date: 05/06/07     Keywords: rss, software, virus, web, spyware, google

I'm trying to help my Mom out with her computer.

She bought a Sony Vaio desktop in Winter 2003/2004 at Best Buy. She bought it to replace the Gateway desktop that my brothers had basically killed. She intended for them to use the old computer and she'd use the new one - but slowly my brothers got hold of her computer too.

We ran a virus scan this week and she had something like 30+ "threats" that were spyware, adware, or viruses.

I backed up all her photos to CDs and then used the Vaio Recovery Wizard which is supposed to restore your compute to the day the factory built it.

Now her 30+ threats are gone (where Norton couldn't get rid of them before), but she's still getting the same error message when she starts up her computer (she has to hit F2 to get to some screen - then from that screen she has to hit Esc and then Enter), but she's gotten used to that (I have no idea what the hell happened there!) All night, every couple minutes, she's been getting these error messages saying that she needs a registry cleaner, that there's an error, etc.

We Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the Task Manager up and click on the error message to find the process. The process is csrss.exe. I Googled it and it says that is a normal System file - but if it's located elsewhere it's a virus. Well, it is located in the folder it's supposed to be in, but she's constantly getting these messages. They're telling her that her system is corrupted and she needs to go to a website to download a registry cleaner. We tried about 3 of those web addresses, but she keeps just getting software that finds errors, but won't let her fix them unless she pays $39.95 (or whatever that particular program charges) for the program.

Any ideas? Should she pay for one of those programs? Should she just keep ignoring the pop-ups? Or should she just suck it up, bring her computer to Best Buy / Geek Squad, and have them fix it for her?

  13. windows media player -- pop-up saying requires license??

    Date: 05/05/07     Keywords: no keywords

I'm trying to play a song I downloaded from the program, Frostwire.
It opens in Windows Media Player but it doesn't play--it says a License is required.
I don't understand how to get this license...
It says a license for this file (my song) 'cannot be found, has expired or was corrupted'.

I'm actually playing the song on a different computer...
I downloaded it from my sister's computer and it worked fine, but when I transferred it to my computer, it didn't work.
I was thinking maybe I should download Frostwire to my own computer and maybe the song will be able to be played that way. I wonder if I could just burn the songs to a cd and have it play...

  14. Reformatting a laptop

    Date: 05/03/07     Keywords: virus

Hello there, I plan to reformat my laptop and I just have some questions about it. First off, the disk that I will be using to boot it back up from is a copy, will this affect anything if I have a valid product key? Does it matter that I will be reformatting a laptop as opposed to a normal PC? I have some pictures that I want to keep from the computer but how do I scan these to make sure they're not infected with a virus, and free program recommendations are welcomed. Lastly, I cannot get access to any virus protection for my computer at the moment so what is a good free virus programs that I can use? Thanks for any help. :) Oh and if it matters, it's an acer.

  16. Networking woes

    Date: 05/03/07     Keywords: no keywords

I'm trying to add another computer to our router. It's an HP Presario, with a fresh (as in, I'm still running setup) install of XP Media Edition. As soon as I plug the network cable into that back of the computer, everything else on the network loses connectivity. This is a wired network, and everything's going through a Linksys Cable router.

I'm not even sure what other information you'd need to troubleshoot this, as my networking days are long, long behind me (Netware were still the gods of the networking world last time I did hardware). So tell me, what info do you need to help me?

    Thanks.

  20. Taskbar Buttons

    Date: 05/01/07     Keywords: microsoft, google

Recently, I restarted my computer only to find that my taskbar buttons no longer appear (I have XP). Everything else is there: taskbar, start menu, toolbars (like Windows Media, Quick Launch or the Language Bar), and the date/time. The taskbar is not locked. When I have a program open (like Firefox right now) a button does not show up on my taskbar. I've googled around, searched Microsoft Support, and asked around, but no one seems to know what's up. Does anyone have any ideas where my buttons went or how I can get them back? Thanks.
