  2. Help, please

    Date: 04/30/07     Keywords: no keywords

I downloaded a torrent for Pinnacle studio (yes, torrents, very bad, smack my wrist). Anyway, what I have now is a folder of .rar and .r[number] files. The instructions were to Unpack, burn/mount and install.

    How?

If someone could walk me through it, I would be very grateful.

  3. WinXP's winlogon.exe uses 99% of CPU

    Date: 04/30/07     Keywords: virus, antivirus

    Hi!

    Can you help me?

    Problem:

Windows XP works properly till I connect to the Internet, then process  winlogon.exe (I have only one winlogon.exe on my computer and this is WinXP system file) loads the CPU of 99%!

In Safe Mode system works fine even I connect to the Internet.

    I don't understand what's happening.

I tried to use antivirus soft with latest bases but it gave no effect. I think that this is not a virus.

    But what is it??!!

    Thanks.

  4. XP not recognizing RAM?

    Date: 04/30/07     Keywords: google

I've googled this, and seen a number of answers, but all of them have to deal with hitting the 4GB memory ceiling. I'm nowhere close, so I'm hoping someone's seen something tailored more towards my problem.

I just upgraded the RAM in my system. The motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-X, and contains three DIMM slots. Each should be able to contain a 512MB DIMM, for a total of 1.5GB, and it's possible to mix and match.

Currently, I have a 512MB DIMM in slots 1 and 2, and a 256MB DIMM in slot 3. I have attempted switching them around so that the 256MB DIMM is in each slot, and still have the same problem.

When the system boots up, the machine recognizes and tests all of the memory in the machine, so I have 1.25GB RAM, and the system knows it. But when XP (Pro, fully updated) starts, it shows I have 512MB RAM, no matter what I do with the DIMMs. When I run SiSoft Sandra, it too shows 512MB available RAM, but a motherboard scan shows the DIMMs accurately-- so the system (with XP running) at least sees the DIMMs and knows they exist. I've read about a bug where Control Panel::System will only show 512MB no matter how much is there, but Cacheman is also installed on my system, and it, too, shows only 512MB available.

I'd really like to be able to access the rest of that RAM, if possible. Has anyone ever seen anything like that, and do you know what I can do about it? Thanks.

  5. toshiba laptop power issue

    Date: 04/29/07     Keywords: no keywords

i have a toshiba satellite laptop from 2003. it's working fine with the exception of the poor air intake/exhaust system which has to be systemically opened and cleaned until a few weeks ago.

there is something amiss with the power source. when i plus the AC adapter in it may or may not recognize it as charging. i have to twirl it around in the port until the battery light comes on and it recognizes it being plugged in. with the slightest jolt it will appear to 'dislodge' (though it's still plugged in) and the battery light will go out and the plug light will dim. i then fidget with it to get that right angle and it will power back on again.

my computer has almost NO battery charge capacity off of the power cord and so it now results in frequent shut downs because it can't handle being off the cord for very long. i've blown on both the cord plug and the port and purchased a new ac adapter with no change.

    ideas?

  6. Question about keyboard shortcuts in Adobe Photoshop CS3?

    Date: 04/27/07     Keywords: no keywords

I just got PS CS3, and i cant seem to get the layer mood shortcuts to work (screen, overlay, multiply)In PS 7 I just used shift+alt+s...ect.But that dont seem to work in CS3.

I go to Edit–>Keyboard Shortcuts but there aren`t any commands listed for the layer moods,(not that i can see anyway) so i cant specify which shortcuts i wanna use:(The only thing there, that has to do with layers is Layer style shortcuts(drop shadow, color overlay, stroke)

Anyone know where i can find the layer mood shortcuts? Or maybe CS3 doesnt have them at all?

    Thanks so much in advance:)

  8. net connection going nuts...

Date: 04/19/07     Keywords: software, browser, virus, web, spyware

    SOLLUTION:
I had NETframework installed, which effected many applications on windows.
    I uninstalled it.
    Possible other problem:
    Tag by mailware.

Thank you so much for your help!

I’m running Windows XP and I’m using BitDefender, Spybot and AdAware.

    My problem:
My internet connection suddenly cuts off when I’m surfing the web. Usually, my messenger switches off first. I don’t think I would really notice if I didn’t have my messenger on, because my net-connection icon doesn’t switch off at all. Nor does my LAN-status-icon change.
It all started when I rebooted my computer a few days ago, and my computer suddenly asked me for my username and password. I never ever make a computer administrator account/user account and activate it, though I know it’s always there from the start. It’s driving me nuts!
I tried deactivating it, but it won’t let me. I can’t even change it or anything.
Maybe I installed some software that activated it. I don’t know.
I haven’t knowingly downloaded any malicious software and installed it ever since formatting my computer, and neither spybot, AdAware nor BitDefender find anything when I do a system scan.
Another odd thing is that BitDefender is now always trying to connect to the internet without being prompted to. I have switched off automatic updates, because I can’t stand it when I’m in the middle of doing something, and those updates start eating up all my MB RAM.
Anyway. When my connection breaks down, the connection-icon doesn’t vanish as it usually would. It shows me that I’m still online. When I double-click on it, a window opens and vanishes again instantly, though it shouldn’t. When I left-click on it and try to cut the connection, I don’t get a reaction. The icon doesn’t change.
What confuses me the most is that my messenger won’t reconnect, my browser won’t open any new sites, but the clip I’m watching over at youtube dot com won’t stop playing. As far as I know, internet connection is required for watching clips at youtube.
I’m very confused right now, and I really hope that all of this makes sense.

(again in short: 1) my browser and messenger seem to be cut off from the net, but the icons tell me I’m online – and so does youtube.
    2) I can’t deactivate my local user account – which I myself have never activated
    3) my spyware and anti-virus software doesn’t detect any infected or defect files/etc.)

    Does anyone have any ideas?
Is my network card maybe messed up somehow? It’s brand new, but it was super-cheap.
Is my computer maybe infected with a virus or Trojan, that somehow manipulates my anti-virus and spyware software?

Your help and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  9. DVD Drive Problems

    Date: 04/19/07     Keywords: no keywords

Everything worked fine the day before...

My E:\ drive (Pioneer DVD-117R DVD-ROM) tray won't eject without jamming a paperclip into the manual eject hole, but I can hear the mechanism whirring when I hit the eject button. Popped some media (DVD, Audio CD, Data CD) in there, but nothing reads.

My F:\ drive won't read anything but DVDs. It's an aftermarket DVD-RW drive (Sony DRU-800A) that I installed myself. Thing is, I'm locked out of playing DVDs because of copyright protection.

Tried Googling a remedy, and tried powering down, unplugging everything on the tower, prying the stubborn Sony covers off to dettach and reattach the cables. Blew a ton of dust away with some canned air.

Wanted to dissect the E:\ drive, but I read the warning about laser radiation and thought otherwise.

I can see them listed in my available drives in Explorer (no change. I could do that before.)

It's driving me nuts. I wanna listen to and burn new media I got (my little 80GB hard drive is filling up again...)

Running Windows XP Home Edition. What can I do aside from paying outrageously for someone else to do it?

  11. No disk found

    Date: 04/18/07     Keywords: no keywords

So my friend called me today, his gf's laptop randomly is saying it cannot find the hard disk. Its never done that before, and its making a constant clicking like a time bomb.
I was wondering if anyone has ever encountered this before. They said it hasn't been dropped or anything, I thought maybe it got a static shock some how.
If anyone has any ideas that would be great thanks, I have no idea what the specs are.
    Also posting in computersupport.

I can hardly watch a video cause it keeps starting and stopping and things like messengers are slow sometimes. I’ve looked up processes and deleted some but for every process I delete one comes up :( I give up *hangs head* I hate not being able to fix my own problems…but I don’t have anyone to ask…
I use ad-aware SE and have norton if that helps?

I have AIM 6.0 and I remember being able to go through your buddies and add a name for them and have that show up on your buddy list instead of their actual screen name.
I forgot how to do this and I've been trying to figure it out.  The only thing that I am able to find is under the menu "View" you can select "friendly names" which I believe is what I'm trying to add to my buddy list.
I hope this made some sense.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  14. Connecting my LG CU400 to my PC

    Date: 04/14/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi,

I've gotten ahold of a USB data cable to connect my cell phone, an LG CU400, to my PC. My aim is to upload MP3s as ring tones to my phone and to download photos and videos from my phone. However, contrary to what LG told me, my phone does not automatically appear as a USB mass storage device when I connect it. I just get the Found New Hardware Wizard, and it can't find any drivers. I checked LG's site, and the only files they had associated with my phone were PDFs. Bitpim doesn't support the CU400, and I can't seem to find any programs or drivers that do. Do any of you know where I might look?

Thank you very much in advance.

I have a Dell 8400 with a 3.4 GHz P4 processor and 1 gig of RAM running XP Pro, fully patched.

How do I get it to store/cache DNS resolutions longer... I'd like it to store the IP for a given address for at least a couple hours before it looks again. Currently, it looks almost every time the domain name is called. My ISP's DNS servers are overloaded and I'm sick to tears of getting "Can't find address" constantly.

    Thank you very much.

but today he came in telling me that his ipod isn't playing his music instead he does this.
my dad clicks music->albums->album name->then song name. then the song comes out but instead of actually playing them it goes through each one and plays nothing at all.

the circle thing on the ipod also seems like its hard. i usually struggle to get it to a certain place cuz its so sensitive and this time i even feel like i need to press it hard. the screens also seem to freeze. sometimes when i press menu to go to another screen it freezes half way through the transition and then finally about 10 seconds or so it goes to the next screen.

sorry if this doesn't make sense but i just woke up and my dad quickly asked me to figure it out. any help is really appreciated. this is my dad's priced possession since me and my brother got it for him. he uses it for everything.

EDIT: i figured it out. i just needed to restart it which i had no idea i could do. me and dad practically jumped up in joy!!!

  19. Geocities?

    Date: 04/08/07     Keywords: java, web

Okay. So I use Geocities as my website builder.
Something's obviously gone wrong, here's the problem:

I have two accounts: one is the username of 'trademillenium' which is used for the main page of my website: front page, contact page etc.
The other username is 'fizzypineapple' which I use for my Cliques and fanlistings page as well as for posting website stamps (those plaques you get when you apply at a Livejournal community and they tell you which movie character you're most like, etc).
Click 'Open' on Pagebuilder, there comes up the options of going to either the cliques page, the stamps page, and here's the problem: my main front page on the 'trademillenium' account (remember that I'm logged in on the 'fizzypineapple' account.)
Now, clicking to open the 'Cliques/fanlistings' page, this box comes up constantly and won't allow me onto the page:
    'Error loading: /cliquesfanlistings.page
    java.io.EOFException

What does this mean, and how can I fix it?

  20. Anyone know why my laptop ie explorer closes on it's own?

    Date: 04/07/07     Keywords: no keywords

It might not happen all the time. I've got the latest version for XP home. I can start it and it will close it, try 3-4 times and then it stays open and i can use it. Somewhere later i can click something (not the X) and it will close the window like an error happened but no info. The only odd thing is i get a taskbar window kinda pop up, then go away before an window opens to tell me what it is. I have nortons and it is running.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
