Wierd, but annoying problem
Date: 04/07/07
Keywords: browser, web
Having just found this comm, I have to say thank god! I hate joining to post in different for help ):
that said, I have a really wierd problem when using IE Explorer. I just installed the latest version for IE not too long ago, but this was happening with the older version aswell.
The problem is that when I'm typing in a web url and don't include the "www." an error will occur with the internet browser and all my windows will close.
example, if I was trying to vist livejournal I couldn't type "livejournal.com" I'd have to type out the full "www.livejournal.com," otherwise an error would occur.
Not the biggest, most damaging problem out there but still annoying none-the-less.
Help would be greatly appreciated!

Is there a reason why Firefox has no problem displaying and retaining favicons, and IE has a problem with displaying them or retaining them after you've restarted your computer?

Muzak
Date: 04/04/07
Keywords: software
Okay, we've all heard the shitty background music in almost every place we go outside of our home or car. Lets say I wanted to build a shitty system like that for my house. I have winamp, a ton of mp3s, but I'm searching for the right plug-in that would tie it all together. I want randomness. I want a way to make sure every song gets played before something repeats, and I want to be able to "schedule" a song to play more often than others (particularly newer songs).
Anyone know of ANY way to do this with Winamp or any other software product? Or am I just gonna have to build weekly playlists?

Balloon-like message missing

Hi, I have a problem with my laptop because all the balloon-like messages (i.e. 'You can now safely remove your USB', 'Low battery, charge') do not appear though there is the sound signifying the command. Is there something I can do to make it appear because it's pretty confusing not to see the messages. Thank you.

I have windows XP home 2002 edition with 256 mb (on a 2002 Dell Dimension model), and it runs fine, but I was wondering if I could replace it by installing Windows Xp Media Center Edition instead?
would it even run correctly, Or does that require more memory?
Just wondering, if it can't be done then i'll just stick with regular Xp. Thanks ;)

I have a Compaq with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. When I try to read burned CDs it simply tells me they are blank, but the data on these CDs will read just fine on other computers.
Is my CD drive faulty already? We just got this computer in December. Is there anything I can do to remedy this problem?

Cannot delete file?
Date: 03/19/07
Keywords: no keywords
For some reason, when I try to delete certain folders from my D: drive (which is internal), the computer tells me the file cannot be deleted because it's in use by another person or program. Unlocker pops up a window saying the user is Explorer.EXE, and there are sometimes 6-8 locking handles on the same folder (not the files in the folder, mind you, but the folder itself). When I have Unlocker unlock the folder, Explorer.EXE relocks it immediately, and Unlocker will then pop up a window saying no locking handles were found, but the file still can't be deleted.
After extensive googling a few months back, I found a registry setting that controls this and changed it, but I can't find the same information, so I can't go back in and check to see if it's still changed.
I'm in the process of backing up and clearing off the hard drive, and I'm trying to mass-delete 40-50 folder at a time after they've been burned to DVD-R. Needless to say, going into each one, deleteing all the files, and then deleting the folder (when the empty folder will delete, which is only about half the time) will be exceptionally time-consuming, and I'd rather just have the computer work the way it used to. This problem started when I added an external hard drive (E:) to the system, which is no longer on it.
Also, I've tried downloading the Delete FXP Files program; it can't delete folders recursively unless I pay for it, and as this is (hopefully) a one-time operation, I'd prefer not to use payware as a solution.
Anyone have any ideas about how I can stop this behavior? Thanks.

AntiVir Personal Edition - is it good?
Date: 03/19/07
Keywords: virus, antivirus
A friend recently told me that AntiVir is a good program; better than AVG which is what I'm currently using right now. I checked reviews from download.com and many approved of the antivirus program except for its interface and slow manual updates. Does anyone here also use AntiVir? I'd like to know from some of you if has better performance than AVG when it comes to viruses.

laptop fan
Date: 03/19/07
Keywords: no keywords
It seems like my laptop fan is ALWAYS running... it is extremely loud to the point where it is embarassing to take the class and I was wondering what I can do about this? I've tried using compressed air to get dust off of the fans, but as this laptop is [relatively] new, about a year and a half old, there wasn't much dust in there to begin with. I can't figure out if the computer really *is* overheating and needs to have the fan on, or if there is something wrong with the sensor which causes it to be on all of the time. I bought an external fan (a coolpad) to put underneath the laptop, but the laptop fan is still running (so now ive got the noise of like 4 fans going!). Speedfan listed my internal temperatures as HD: 32C and Temp1: 55C (this is with the coolpad running as well). Are these normal? What can I do to remedy the situation?
Thanks!

vista?
Date: 03/19/07
Keywords: no keywords
a friend of mine is looking for a laptop and i have been recruited to be the one to pick it since i have a pretty good working knowledge of computers. i have up until this point avoided vista because of the problems i keep hearing about being it. also the person i'm buying a computer for doesn't know much about computers at all and i don't know how much of a learning curve vista has. on top of all this, i have been asked to get rid of the crap on the computer when it comes in and put in some good essential stuff (avg free, zone alarm, irfanview, office, etc) and i don't know how well these programs will work on vista if they work at all.
the problem is i'm coming up short on finding computers that don't have vista preloaded and i'm not crazy about downgrading a brand new computer to xp. so i'm either looking for advice about vista or where to buy a cheap laptop (new) with xp still loaded on it. i've been looking on newegg and tigerdirect and there are a few but not a ton. she wants a 17" monitor which is complicating the issue.
thanks for the help!
updated: i guess i should add that she wants to spend less than $1000 if at all possible. thanks again!

DST woes (yes, still)
Date: 03/16/07
Keywords: no keywords
So, all of the machines I manage on the Win 2003 Server updated to DST after I force-installed the update through some nifty little hacks.
Anyway, I have one lowly Win XP Pro SP2 computer that REFUSES to update its clock. It's a sad little thing, sniffling in the corner all by its lonesome. And now that I've tried restarting, repatching and even installing the patch using the executable you can download independently of MS Update, the clock is STILL an hour off.
I just want to put an end to its misery. And mine.
Any ideas?

I've got a file on my comp I can't seem to remove. at least according to mcafee virus scan. Its called "generic pup.g". I've looked on line, but the cleaning process seems quite involved and i'm worried about screwing up my computer. I've run spybot as well and it does not detect it at all. SO could someone walk me through the steps? I'm using Windows XP.

OS restorations
Date: 03/14/07
Keywords: software, google
Do I need a backup/recovery disc if one day, Windows doesn't start?
I've had one with all my previous PCs with all the drivers etc. on it, but my new PC does not have one!
Using that F10 malarky, I can apparently restore Windows without a disc... so if I don't need some kind of Windows disc, what about the drivers?
Click Start > All Programs > System Recovery > Recovery Media Creator
You will be presented with a “Welcome” screen. Click Continue.
You will be shown some information about the creation process. Click Continue and follow the on-screen instructions.
Click Start Creation to create your System Recovery CD Set.
The recovery creation software will advise you how many blank CDs/DVDs you will need to create your System Recovery set. A DVD has a much higher capacity than a CD and will require less discs.
You will then be asked to insert a blank disc into your computer. Label this CD “Recovery CD 1” and then insert it into your DVD/CD Rewriter drive.
Once you have inserted your blank disc the process should continue – If it does not, click OK to continue.
The creation process will continue until you are prompted for a 2nd CD. Label this CD “Recovery CD 2” and then insert it into your DVD/CD Rewriter drive.
Once the disc creation has completed you will see a “Congratulations” screen. Click OK and the program will exit.
You have now created a complete set of Recovery disc(s) for your computer. These discs will allow you to restore your computer in case of any problems with your Windows® XP software.
Keep these discs in a safe place.
Is that just backing up programs & files? Or drivers too? I've Googled my brains out trying to find something but it's all really unhelpful :s
