Outlook automatically replies in text format if the original message is text which is fair enough. Is there anyway I can permanently forward in html even if the original message is in text? Is there a place in settings to override that function?

    Ugg...this virus...can it be helped?

OK, I'm scanning with Norton Anti-Virus software, and have counted 12 viruses on my (Mom's) laptop. Windows just pop-up when I either, do nothing or click on a link on a web page. And in this entry certain text is turning green, and acting as if they are links.

I think I may gotten the darn thing from here, so please be careful when clicking on the link.

I have never had trouble with this site before, any thoughts/suggestions?

I hope I can fix this problem before my Mom finds out.

    Can it get worse?

    (Looks at virus count: 21)...ugg.

Do you think Norton can detain these?

[EDIT: OK, I've deleted 12 of these...about 8,9, remain. I am doing another scan to see if I can quarantine these things.)

  4. Adding a second processor

    Date: 12/29/05     Keywords: no keywords

A few years back I bought a computer and have slowly come to the realization over time that it was seriously malnourished. It has had much of its guts replaced, and as it stands now, here's what I'm running: an eMachines T2341 with a 40 GB hard drive, Windows XP, featuring an AMD Athlon 1800 processor (1.5 GHz) and 368 MB of usable RAM.

I'm a student, so obviously no free-flowing income here, but I plan on taking a couple hundred dollars and doing some necessary upgrades to my computer. As RAM has already been added in the last six months, I am probably going to wait until fall to upgrade that again, and am looking at a new video card and possibly a new processor.

My question is this: can a computer run more than one processor? I do need a faster processor and desperately, but I think buying one of the big bad ones will drain my wallet more than I can handle. I was hoping I could get a smaller one and add it on to my existing system, boosting my power while salvaging my wallet. If this isn't possible, then I suppose I'll just have to suck it up. But if it IS, then that's the option I want to go with. If it is possible, does this pose any negative side effects to my system, and would I have to add on an AMD Athlon or could I add on any type of processor?

Thanks in advance to any help you guys can give me. :)

  5. ID3 editor and Renaming App?

    Date: 12/29/05     Keywords: no keywords

I wonder if anyone out there might know of an app that would make managing my music files a bit easier. First, I'm looking for an app to edit ID3 tags. I'm using "ID3 TagIT 3" right now, which is just something I grabbed off of Download.com. If you know of something that's easier and faster to use, I'd be much obliged.

Another thing I'm looking for is a program that will allow me to rename batches of files in a particular scheme. For instance, I've been ripping an audio book, and renaming the mp3s to match up with disk and track number. I'll even use a command line utility if it gets the job done.

    Thanks for all your help.

  6. ah, crap.

    Date: 12/28/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Ok, i'm having a problem.

I have windows 98, and earthlink DSL. I recently downloaded a dialer called "winpoet" to connect, because I kept getting disconected without it. The connection is much more stable since i've been using it, but the problem i'm having now, is that I cannot get it to auto-connect upon startup. Earthlink tech support told me to switch to "bridged mode" and download winpoet, to fix my connection issues, so I did.

I'm using windows 98's dial-up networking instead of winpoet's interface (because I don't like winpoet's connection interface), and it works fine, but the problem i'm having is upon startup. I've set the connection to automatically load and connect at startup, but that's not working because I cannot connect without "winpppoverethernet.exe" (installed with winpoet) loaded first. I think the problem is that the dial-up networking connection is loading before "winpppoverethernet.exe" is loaded, and therefore will not connect itself at startup. It loads only a moment later, and when I press the "Connect" button on the dial-up networking connection window, it instantly connects.

So, is there any way to get "winpppoverethernet.exe" to load before the connection box comes up? because I cannot connect to the internet at all unless "winpppoverethernet.exe" is already loaded (it's already set to load everytime at startup.) I'd rather not connect manually everytime my computer restarts.

    Thanks!

Ok, I have a new Media Center PC, and it came with a video card that has a TV tuner. It is an NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache. The TV itself works amazingly in the Media Center program, but there is also a spot for red, white, and yellow AV cables to be inserted. I plugged my PS2 cables into it and turned the PS2 on...now I can't seem to find the option to switch to video in on the Media Center program. Am I missing something?

  9. Slow loading of web pages

    Date: 12/27/05     Keywords: virus, web

Is it high "traffic" that is causing web pages to load very slowly on my laptop or something else? For the past month, I have had loads of trouble getting pages to load at the usual speed. Some do not load at all.Others load to about 45% and then stop. I have to refresh the page A LOT to get them to load but this does not always work and I just give up. This does not happen all the time, but the times when everything works properly are few and far between.

My provider is Wanadoo UK and I have a wireless broadband connection with them. I usually get a speed of about 30 to 56mbps although it should be 1mb. There are 2 other PCs in the house and they also have the same problem so I am thinking it is the provider?? Or the BT line?

    Things I have tried:

Cleared the cache, cleared cookies, cleared unwanted "add-ons". Checked and rechecked connections. Done a virus check. Turned off my Anti-virus (Norton), turned off Windows Firewall. Restored to an earlier restore point. Rebooted the Livebox. Contacted Wanadoo support and done everything they suggest. Checked everything I have installed over the last 3 months. Contacted Windows support, Symantec support and now here!

I would really appreciate some advice as it is a problem that is really getting me to my wits end. I don't enjoy surfing at all right now!

  10. Export AOL personal filing cabinet and address book

    Date: 12/27/05     Keywords: no keywords

I hope I've come to the right place. I've looked back quite a few entries and didn't see my question addressed so here we go... I am finally leaving AOL, but I don't want to leave behind my PFC and address book. Is there an easy and free way to export these to gmail? I think gmail needs the file in CSV format, but I'm not sure what that means and how to do that. AOL advises on how to import stuff, but of course there's nothing about exporting. Thanks for your time!

I need to format and recover a Toshiba Satellite 1135 Series notebook, but I'm missing a recovery disk. (the third) I have no idea what to do. I know some HPs will allow you to make an extra set. Does Toshiba have the same? Will I have to buy a new recovery disk? Where would I get one? I tried their site, but couldn't really find anything. Is there something else I can do entirely? I'm clueless ;_; Also, is it true that the recovery disks will not reinstall windows? I think I head something like that once.

  12. CPU Usage

    Date: 12/26/05     Keywords: spyware

I've been having some problems lately with my CPU usage spiking. It started about a week ago, and I can't think of anything I've done differently that would make it start doing that. I've noticed that when I pause any downloads I have going on BitLord (a bittorrent program) it helps some, but it doesn't completely fix the problem. This sucks because I can't listen to any MP3s or anything properly as they keep skipping when the CPU usage spikes. I think I might've picked up some massive spyware or something, but how do I find and get rid of it? Or could it be another problem?

Here's a screenshot of my Task Manager. Ugh. =(

    Help is very much appreciated.

    Hi '[info]'computer_help:

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2 on my machine at home, and I've been having this weird problem. I believe explorer.exe is corrupted or infected with some malignant code because the screen saver my monitor no longer powers off, and when I return to the computer the mouse moves but will not be able to click or double click anything until I press ALT+TAB on my keyboard.

I've tried running Avast Antivirus, Ad-aware, and HiJack this. Everything comes back clean.

Is there a way I can "restore" explorer.exe and any other altered system files from my install CD?

    Thanks,

  15. Messaging apps won't connect.

    Date: 12/22/05     Keywords: web

Using WinXP SP2 on an Averatec 6220. I typically use AIM as my main instant messaging application. A couple of hours ago, I was talking to a friend and AIM lost its connection. I tried reconnecting, and it can't find a network to connect to -- hangs at step 1. I didn't make any changes to my settings. I didn't download or open any files. It just quit working. I rebooted, I turned my firewall off, I reset my connection manually. None of my instant messaging programs work -- AIM, YIM, and MSN messanger. mIRC will connect. I can obviously connect to the web. Suggestions? Thanks much.

All of the sudden, everything starts going wild and then i restart. It comes back up and everything is gone except for the taskbar, all the taskbar icons were gone too. The clock had a ton of ? marks, and was in military time. Ex: 18:56 ????? And whne i would try to execute something from the start menu, it would say that it cannot do that action because of the restrictions. It even locks up when booting into safe mode. I can get it to connect to my wireless network too. The message boxes were saying Cyanide on them. Its a dell inspiron 9300. Any help would be awesome!

  17. Crossposted question

    Date: 12/21/05     Keywords: asp

Ok, so I am trying to build a new computer for my girlfriend, and I am running in a problem. While installing Windows XP Pro the first time, I got this

I simply restarted and it worked fine, thought it was a dirty disc maybe. Later on, I was installing drivers and such, and it kept randomly shutting down/restarting on me, each time flashing that screen for a brief moment. Now I am trying to reinstall with a different copy of Windows, and after it formats the drive, when it restarts to continue the instalation, that screen pops up again. This has been the way of things constantly now. As soon as it restarts, boom, there is that error screen again, and it just sits there. Another thing, when it was working, and I was updating everything, it kept failing to download the Windows Updater program, so I couldn't get any updates anyway.

At this point I have tried each of the sticks of RAM individually, as well as in different slots. I swapped the power supply and it still does it. I know it isn't overheating at all. Please, does anyone know what I can do to figure out what this might be, or do you know what it is? If it absolutely comes down to it, I will guy my computer to test whatever aspects of the new one I can, but I would like to avoid that if I can.

The last thing I was told might be the cause of it is that Windows can't reconize larger hard drives (this one is an SATA 250GB), so I created a partition that was smaller than that (the maximun size of 131GB), and it still had the error. I am about to try some of the RAM from my computer to see if that might be the issue. If anyone needs more specifics about the parts, please let me know and I weill happily provide them.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, I REALLY appreciate it.

UPDATE: Tried a stick of the RAM in my computer, same problem, although this time instead of shutting off on the "Windows XP" loading screen, it got to that blue screen wtih the 5 steps of installing Windows for about half a second. Progress? Probably not. Here are some specs so that some light may be shed:

Motherboard - Chaintech Zenith Value Edition VNF4 Uktra
    RAM - Corsair VS1GB400C3 DDR400(x2)
    Processor - AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Socket 939
    Power Supply - Ultra ULT31841 V-Series 500 Watt
    Video Card - PNY GeFORCE 6600GT VCG6600GXPB
Hard Drive - Sea Gate 250GB SATA ST3250823ZA

UPDATE: IDE hard drive swap did nothing. Installing the proper SATA drivers did nothing. Checked the system temperature immediately after one of the crashes, it was 33 C., so not overheating. At this point the only thing I can think of is it has to be the motherboard or processor itself, but how the heck do I figure out if they (or which one of them) is bad?

    Date: 12/16/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have the above drive and it worked fine on my old pc. I transferred it across to the new one and it works fine. I recently downloaded CDex and I tried to use it on this pc, but the drive is apparently listed as a VOBID Instant Drive. I checked the Device Manager and the drive is down as two separate units, one, the VOBID Instant Drive CD SCSI CDRom Device, and also a DVDRW IDE 16X.

I have no drivers for the unit, I think the disk is missing and I can't find drivers online (only firmware). Does anyone have the drivers? Does anyone know where I can get them?

EDIT: As far as I know, it's only not working in CDex, I'm not sure if any other ripping programs work.

    TIA
